I own a laptop with I7 and 740m, no issues what so ever, as a matter of fact no issues with mobile cards in general, most of the problems are with the 770&780 desktop combined with certain mobo's from the 4th gen.
Also I noticed that factory oc cards tend to be much more buggy with the latest Nvidia drivers.
If he'll eventually decide to go for the 1st build I recommend a reference card insted of factory oc, you can always oc it by yourself.
For the record, many years ago I had a very bad exp with amd and since then I'm with Nvidia but let's face it these days Amd took the reins..

Thanks for kind replies, but again, I have no idea what to go for. These situations make me wish we had a 3rd hardware manufacturer or just a single one.

Jesus christ, the errors I make after only 7 beers are wonderful.

If you want I can work on a custom list on a price base to how much you are willing to spend?

Ah, thanks but no need. I already bothered the hell out of DAB and HG for the first build as it is. Plus, you wouldn't be able to make a proper build because prices here are sky high compared to yours.

Let's just say that another member of our gaming community is getting an i7 with GTX780 and he'll pay the same price I'll pay for my first build. He's also getting a SSD with it. If I did that I'd pay well over 2000 euro for it.

i7's are a waste of cash, sure they have virtual cores, but if a game or app doesn't use it at all, then..... whats the point if you see what I mean. So you are better off with the i5 equivalent or AMD equivalent.

Unfortunately people just buy for the sake of buying without understanding the hardware fully. What I mean people buy i7s because they think it will be better in the long run, which it isn't.

It is also like people to buy 16GB RAM when they only need 8GB, hardly any games are 64bit supported, thusly only a max of 4GB will be used for the game, and that leaves 4GB for the OS, more than enough. 16GB is overkill and probably have 6-7GB sitting doing nothing at all. But again people will buy more cause they think it will be better.

Some justify it by saying "it will be great for 3D rendering etc" sure it will but common people won't be doing that at all, or even have the knowledge to do it.

    All you really need is

Quad Core+ CPU at 3ghz or more per core
8GB DDR3 (1600 its the most stable for all boards but check that the board supports it)
    Geforce 660+ or AMD 7850+ with 1GB GDDR5
550W+ PSU (80plus certified and helps if modular)
And what ever else you want in terms of optical and HDDs

    OH...

And a decent case! Not one made from Aluminum that vibrates like hell like the cheap cases do.
Oh and Don't forget some tuts on ASM and defeating DMA

The only reason I went for 16GB instead of 8GB is because the price for the 8GB went up a lot, at least here. Basically I can get 8GB for 100 euro or 16GB for 130 euro.
