EA was looking like they were on the way to pulling their **** together with the new refund system but then they cancelled Command & Conquer 2013 just like that, completely out of the blue. They closed down Victory Games and fired all VG employees.
Last year they started selling C&C The Ultimate Collection and promised everybody who bought it early access to the new C&C game. I already owned all of the C&C titles but bought TUC just for the early access (and I guess having them in digital format and all in one place was also nice). I have been waiting for this game for more than a year and every day since late august I've been opening my mail like a child on Christmas morning hoping that that would be the day I got my alpha/beta key.
Last year, after getting scammed with FIFA 13 (I never got my pre-order bonus, the Adidas All-Star Team, after months of contacting customer support and sending in receipts and personal info), I swore I would never buy another FIFA title. Today I know for a fact that I will not buy another EA product ever again, EA is dead for me.
Hahaha. I told you. EA will never change no matter that tactics they pull out their evil bag of tricks. Plus C&C Died when 4 was released. Stars where poor. Graphics where to cartoonish they lost the grit the game had. Special effects in Vids POOR! Story was even more rubbish. Not even worth using £10 worth of points to save money on it. So even £10 for it was not even worth it. Then hearing about what they were going to do with NEXT Generals.... Made me wish for Westwood to come back.
Take it from me. Do not bother with C&C its not what it should be.
I actually give them props for canceling the new C&C game. They said they did it because "It was not the game we wanted" and I would have to agree. I don't want a MMO style C&C game or even a free to play version where I need to buy stuff from them to play it (like AOE online). I want the original style of the game that I can play on my own time, with a campaign, the ability to play AI in skirmish mode, and the option to play with others online if I choose to. The idea where the game is always online to me was a bad idea, as we have already seen with several other games (including a C&C game) it does not work. However, that is just my opinion, take it or leave it.
It's just a cover-up. Some of the developers already shed the light on the truth, it was never about the feedback. As much as I agree with you regarding the MMO and F2P aspects of the game, you don't just develop a AAA title and one year later you decide that was a bad idea because 5000 people (if there even are that many alpha testers) tell you the game sucks (and I can assure you that there were more testers praising the game rather than criticizing it). There are a lot of people that, in the initial stages of building the game design documents, take into consideration a lot of factors and once they decide stuff such as business model of the title they stick with it, they don't just say "Our bad." and scrap everything one year later (of course there are some exceptions to this but it is not the case here). I am 100% sure that it's not about the feedback, and moreover, when did EA ever listen to what the people had to say? Did they scrap Sim City because it's always online? No. Did they scrap FIFA when people were complaining they want offline Virtual Pro? No.
You mentioned AOEO. I love that game, I have over 800 hours played on Steam. A lot of other people also love that game because it is one of the best RTS games ever developed, even with the always online features. They are going to shut down the servers next year because the game is not profitable, it generates little to no income to the developers (which don't exist anymore as a studio). So the issue here is money, not the fact that the game is fun or not based on feedback, but hard cold cash.
Maybe EA didn't want C&C to be the next AOEO, a very enjoyable game that doesn't generate enough revenue to be worth keeping the servers up. I can guarantee you 100% that no developer in their right mind will ever scrap a decent/good game based on the feedback coming from a lot of a couple of thousands of people (or maybe less).
I don't like to speculate but to state that they canceled the game because "It's not the game we wanted" is insulting, it's not like they make the game desing documents on the go, not to mention that you can always add and remove features to/from an online game.
DABhand I summon thee,
Hae erunt tibi artes: imponere morem pacis, parcere subjectis et debellare superbos.
Don't see many Virgil quotations on webforums these days.
Also, I'm dissatisfied with the new NHL game from EA.
Then I guess you will not buy Dragon Age: Inquisition.
I am disappointed with C&C being cancelled, VG ruined it by making it easier after me spending a while on working on the AI, and making it more pay to win.
EA cancelled it because they went off in a total tangent, so direct your anger at VG for ruining it at the end.
