Hey guys, I am a little confused to as of why I can't get archers for Rome. I have only mustered some merc archers in the Egypt areas. Am I researching the wrong buildings? In the tech tree is says they are available, but not available for certain civs? Rome I had archers after a one building, what am I missing??
If you can't say it face to face, don't say it here!!

You need to hold certain region and build an auxiliary barrck in that region, Can't remember which region exactly but if I remember correctly, its where the Greeks are for auxiliary creten archers, and I believe other region will give you auxiliary archers too, go into missile infantry in the encyclopaedia and go into the specific auxiliary archer and the region should be on the right hand side in a box.

This, I recruited Egyptian archers just fine when I build an Auxiliary Barracks in Lybia.

Romans use auxiliaries if you're comparing it to the original Rome total war game you're going to have a bad time.

I believe you can get Egyptian Archers and Creten Archers too.

More damage than slingers but less range
Less damage than skirmishers (velites) but more range.

I control Sparta, I didn't make any military building being I had Roma built up, so why bother. But I did look at the encyclopedia and it said build an aux. camp #2 in Sparta and you will get Cretan archers. I did that and the only way I can get them is if I hire them as mercs?
So is it that you have to build an aux camp in order to hire mercs for that area?
Is aux the same as mercs is what I am asking....
Cretan archers seem to have really good specs...

I believe the army you are using the recruit has to be in Sparta region in order to recruit the archers. If you are all the way in Rome, it won't work, thats is why I usually have to rotate my armies from their positions to give all of them archers.

I know about having to be in the region to recruit, same applies to upgrading weapons and armor.
I figured it out, apparently you need to upgrade to aux IV before you can get Cretan archers. You can get a merc unit at the aux II level, but only one. The merc unit has better armor but the upkeep is insane.
I am getting to like this game more and more, due to that strategy means more than ever with this game...Not just building a super army and roll over everyone. This game is a lot better in a lot of respects than Rome 1

I think you can get answers to your question from game encyclopedia, just search the unit you need to see the requirements.

Here is what I figured out:

    1. best archer: Cretan archer in Hellas, Syrian archer in Syria.

    2. best slinger: Rhodian slinger in Asia, Iberian slinger near around Cartaginensis.

I suppose aux. army can recruit by Mercenary camp only for Rome faction (This is my assumption, I only played Rome, Spata, Carthage and Iceni.) I hope you guys to verify.
