so im making progress despite all the lag, and no battles, but one thing that baffles me, is the marion reform...

once i research it, all my spear guys, (triari?), upgrades into sword legionare, and i can no longer recruit spearmen at all, i thought it would fall under the Aux barracks, but Aux gives me no such unit (got fully upgradet aux barrack in Rome)

did i run into a bug?, or am i missing a building here?

i must say im enjoying the campaign part very much, after getting rid of most of the lag, and while i may have bashed it alot in recent threads, i do recognise the potiential for glory, just needs heavy patching

There should be a spear unit called Auxiliary Infantry or somesuch available from the Auxilia barracks. They don't match up to triarii, but they can do the job.

After settling things in Italy, my first port of call with the Romans is Crete, to set up a max level Aux barracks there; Hoplites, good peltasts (Better than velite) and amazing archers. In my opinion, a Greco-Roman mixed force is better than pure Roman; you just take the best of both.

    Good advice Fontane,

I really like phalanx pikes tbh for anticavalry. But hoplites are also solid spear infantry, especially spartan ones.

I am trying to expand north and east first, but Carthage still controls 1 minor settlement and 1 provincial capitol inside the italian peninsula. I am just building up my legions and fleets to combat them.

Also 1 question when does the marius reform kick in? Does it have any requirements or is it set to occur at a certain point or time?

I think historically it happened about 105BC (Ish, don't quote me), but I think the end of one of the military tech trees in Rome is basically the reforms; you unlock all the units that the reforms created.

Then again, I haven't actually gone to 105BC in any of my games yet; I have a bad habit of switching around factions, trying different things out, so I can't be sure if anything extra happens then

What do you mean archers?? Do Romans have archers?

Get ready for the Civil War doomstacks then, I was at around 127 BC with Egypt and would have had my savegame ruined by one of them (already lost the willpower to play in a Spartan one due to it), the CH trainer saved my campaign but now I hate myself because I don't like using trainers for Total War.

Short: Be careful when you reach "Intimidating" status for a civil war.

Romans can recruit local troops so I think he is talking about Cretan Archers.

Is there anywhere a guide showing which regions specialize in "certain" troops?
