Actually writing any byte value to all sectors of the drive will erase all data, and is guaranteed.

The disclaimer on DBAN's site is for people who use the quick option which is not thorough, but if you choose the correct way it will wipe out everything.

I'm not sure you're right but I sure hope so...

The thorough way will write 0's on every track and on every sector. Even the MFT and MBR.

Choose Gutmann standard (35x) and you'll be fine... after 6 months if non stop wiping for a 500 GB HDD. But anything as >7x is not recoveryable as well, even for experts. For non experts, 3x is fine.

PS: Every tool is good to use as they're all doing the same, just be sure to check it's low level wiping then as Dabhand said, it will overwrite the header file as well. Personally I stick to Jerico software but they cost.

Yup I chose gutman and it seems it's gonna take forever.. At least it's worth it.
