So... Just to confirm...
If i use the trainers with steam I'm not going to get an account VAC ban? This work-around for the patch will keep us safe?
as I already wrote:
I think steam might want to reconsider what ITS position is on this. hooking into the user's windows api files (like kernel32.dll in this instance) is borderline viral and/or rootkit activity.. blizzard got into trouble changing users windows files and monitoring users files running in memory and the like.
this steam compatibility tool doesn't do anything except reset the windows api that STEAM itself hooked. no steam code is changed with ANY of our trainers or this tool.
our trainers manipulate the game code itself and nothing more.
I think steam is messing around with something here that might get them into trouble..
best,
Cal

Since they can't say for sure without exposing themselves to liability, I'll offer a conjecture. No, you probably won't get a VAC ban. That would require a recursive check AFTER the un-malware tool (which is basically what this is - Steam hooks into some key Windows executables, like, oh, kernal freaking 32.exe). Right now it's a one-way trip. It modifies the code, the Steam Trainer Tool modifies it back to normal. There's no watchman - right now, anyway - seeing if it's still altered from its original state. If they introduce another, recursive check to see if the memory they originally modified has been re-modified, that might change.
This is my conjecture. It is not church. It is not fact.
The irony of this is they're essentially using a big malware-style "trainer" on your system, hooking into and modifying memory in a way that we cannot guarantee will be secure, in the name of stopping trainer usage. Hypocrites.
Well I dunno what the go is but I do know steam slipped in yet another update when I logged on about 20 minutes ago & that the 'steam trainer activation tool' doesn't appear able to get the incredible adventures of van helsing trainer to work.
The 'activated' message comes through from the CH steam tool just once - after I launch the CH Van Helsing game launcher but the trainer itself she no work.
If I had to guess I'd say steam done circumvented the CH workaround.
if the game has a launcher, you have to use the tool twice, otherwise it'll still crash
----EDIT
Scratch the above, seems the updated tool does this automatically ......but that said, i just tested trainers for 3 games, they still all work
