Save to build a pc guys. Better off that way.
He says he'll be travelling a lot in the next couple of years, no point in dragging a desktop PC with him then.
He is not going to get a decent lappy to compete with top games. Which will mean he is going to need to spend over 500 close to 1k for a good gaming laptop to keep up with todays games. So pritty much your paying for another rig system.

I bought my laptop two years ago, dual-core i5 2.3GHz with turbo boost, 16gb of ram (upgraded from 6), nVidia 252M, for $649 and it runs every game I've ever installed at max quality settings.
The 16gb of ram is for running all my school virtual machines and still having room left over for system processes, and other stuff.
