Following the video, I end up with a ship in a 98 year orbit.

The line goes straight out, then disappears, then comes back and loops around the opposite side of the solar system.

Use the maneuver tool, tools.

At any point on the ship's path on the map, click on it and add a maneuver. Play with the resulting controls (I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE) until you have a new path you like.

Your Navball will now have a blue target on it. Orient the ship to point directly at it, and once you reach the point indicated, burn until the little green bar on the right of the navball is as depleted as you can get it.
