Deus Ex: Human Revolution Message Board  

Apparently GameStop realized that in each Deus Ex HR box for the PC was a coupon of some sort for downloading a digital copy of the game from a little know competitor and didn't like it. They actually had the nerve and audacity to open and remove it, then sell it like new. Now they're removing them from the shelves altogether. Link

That isn't legal at all.

That's a **** move by them to do that. Looks like I'll be sticking to Wal-Mart or Target for my games.

I don't see why it's a big deal, people do worse things when it comes to business rivalry. Plus why would you want the discount if you already bought the game?

The big thing you have to remember is that they literally took off the wrapping, took out a small DLC style piece of paper and re-wrapped. The only reason this is a big problem is because they are also being accused of selling pre-owned games as new and this shows how easy it is to do that.

Does this affect how I look at Gamestop? Not at all. How many other companies do this and not tell us? A product has a coupon for a big competitor and they remove it. Woop-dee.

This is clearly a bad move by Gamestop.
1. My first issue is how did Gamestop know that the coupon was inside?
2. Secondly what possible problem can a coupon for a game that Gamestop has already sold going to cause them? Clearly they didn't think this one through as the firestorm caused by them snooping is both promoting OnLive and kicking Gamestop in the balls! If they didn't like the coupon then send the package back to the publisher for replacements or refuse to sell it!
3. My last issue is they didn't come clean by announcing they were doing it. Rather, they did it and got caught, THEN they admitted to it and started a recall. If they had stated from the get go they were opening the game and removing said coupon (assuming here that they found out about the coupon from the publisher not by snooping) then they would have had a leg to stand on morally.

In my humble opinion they deserve any and all hate that comes for such a ridiculous move. I will seriously reconsider buying anything from them after such questionable behavior.


As to whether or not it is legal to do what they did is something a court will decide not us (if it even goes there).

While I haven't purchased this game (and I'm not sure if I ever will) I think GS has some nerve pulling a stunt like that. If I didn't like the idea of buying used games at a discount so much, I'd quit buying games from them altogether.

Is there any documentation saying they're recalling the games? I haven't seen any.
