The open beta people were mass invited to was only chapter 1 yes, but there was a closed beta with movies and all chapters available.
I find it funny people are complaining that it was a demo, people upset that they didn't get the full game nearly for free?
D3 is superior to D2, so much more to it, people are just crying like babies cause they didn't get the full thing to play.
I had the closed beta. It actually was only the first half of Act I and no cinematics available.

Doesnt sound like the closed beta, there was people who tested the game fully, previous people who have debugged beta's for blizzard in the past as well as experienced people in game development who signed up.
Thats what was talked about in the forums etc a couple of months back.
It's WoW with a Diablo feel, a messed up Auction House, more demanding graphics, and you have to pay blizzard extra cash on whatever you sell...and single player, that's just a laugh: A game with a single player mode where you can't store your save files on your own computer? How many people have been waiting for this game for over a decade now, only to see that it's a mockery of what it could have been?

Just because its online and has an auction house does NOT make it WoW, its not the first time this has happened, Assassin's creed 2, Starcraft 2, the list can go on more... but people don't realise this is a compromise over the warez issues that are going on, if you have some of the game online... it makes it harder for the groups to release the game, it takes them time to develop an emulator that will deal with all the online parts and saving data.
I am a bit fed up hearing this "WoW" excuse now, because it is no where near WoW that the excuse is almost the greatest joke on earth.

Here's an entire playthrough of the closed beta by Day[9] (and Blizzard loves him):
