Noticed the thunder?
Adds a bit more fear to the game if you really hate thunder. And it's dark enough for hostile mobs to spawn so...

Up until 1.6 came out, rain could be seen falling through water... Which was very, very F and G...
Oh, and if lightning strikes a pig it turns into a zombie pigman.
