is there a quick way to level up your units. it seems like it takes forever for my units to level up.

Usually in Total War games xp is simply gained by the number of kills a unit has. As far as I remember from Empire a unit had to have killed about 200 enemies (ie. 2 full units) in order to get 1 chevron. The numbers are aggregated over time so just keep on killing.

My advice is to keep on playing the battles, even after you have routed your enemy, and chase down any survivors.
This approach favors cavalry, but in siege battles your infantry can really get som high numbers.
