Carver died on me while I was playing a female warrior, so I'm guessing gender has no influence on it.

that is wrong, its like the others said, its bassed on your class, Rogue-Warrior Carver died, Mage Bethany dies

it makes some sense when you think about it, if your a mage, do you really need another mage to come along? If your a warrior do you really need another to come along? the only debatable one is if your rogue, maybe they could have made that one random :P

as a mage I was able to trick the game into letting Bethany live and force carver to die at the Ogre cutsceen.

Everything there works fine and would through the rest of the game as long as it thinks you are a warrior/mage or rogue/mage dual class. I suppose you could remove mage though I am not sure how the game would handle that if mage was you base (first class) from character creation.

What i did not try was to see what ability trees i get on level up like a mix of rogue and mage speciialisations.

If you remove the rogue class and so you are just mage and not mage/rogue dual class with bethany forced to live after ogre then the cutsceens are messed up with carver's voice and a mute bethany actor in carver's place.

The same should work with carver , though might be harder since if you are rogue or warrior they are lower in number for the addtalent command and following DA2 wiki the lower the class number means it overrides the higher classes warrior > rogue > mage.
