My undertsanding is that I need to fully up grade my ship in order to survive the final mission in the game. What are the upgrades do I need and who do I get them from?
Any help would be very much appreicated. Thanks in advance.

Talking to your recruited squad mates will give you upgrades to research for the ship.

All you did is tell me what I already know and did not answer my question.

You get Silaris armor from Jacob by asking him about upgrades when Mordin is on your team or finishing his loyalty mission before he asks you about it. Reflective shields from Tali, same case as Jacob and Thanix Cannon from Garrus same case as previous ones.
There are some non-critical though useful tech from asking or finishing loyalty missions, but most of them are just to make for better fighting.

Also let me inform you that unless you follow a strong Paragon path to get loyalties from your team mates, you'll need a very strong Renegade personality. Though I always felt inappropriate when I did some renegade choices.

Loyalty from all team members is mandatory if you want everyone to survive and get the "No one gets left behind achievement". Also there will be some confrontations between teammates that if you don't have a strong Paragon or Renegade personality will end up with one of those teammates losing their loyalty to you. Those are Tali & Legion and Jack & Miranda

Also choices for who does special missions on suicide mission are as such:
Vents: Tali or Legion, have both loyalties finished (will be tricky since there is a confrontation between them, same as Jack and Miranda)
2nd Fire team: Miranda or Garrus (whoever make sure you choose him/her for the diversion team)
Escort(this role will be available if you choose to escort the survivors): Mordin is your best bet.
Diversion team: Miranda or Garrus.

That should be it.
