I was browsing around on the Steam forums and man! do they hate cheaters.

    But why?

What's so bad about using cheats and trainers? Look, I NEVER even try using it when playing MP, what's the point? But banning people using cheats on their personal PC's is just madness.

I am a fully paid up life lime member of CHU and I will only use trainers once I've completed the game without any.

I'm afraid to download any trainers for my Steam Games, just now the Anti cheat Steam thing decides to lock my game or account and then I'm stuffed!

Steam's forums are full of console geeks who play Peggle on Steam trying to play with the adults.
In the end they will lay their freedom at our feet and say to us, 'Make us your slaves, but feed us.'

It derives from two classes of gamers: Casuals and Professionals.

I'm pretty sure you know the standard casual player with video games so I don't need to bore you with that. So I'll go straight to professional oriented players.

Professional oriented players (not actual professionals but those who want to follow as if they were one) are users who want to perfect the metagame of their selected video-game of choice to the point of mastery. Some very good examples of this include DotA, StarCraft, and Counter-Strike.

What makes this unique to professional oriented players is that the challenge does not come from the computer AI, but the human opponents. Human opponents are not predictable like the AIs so not only do you have to execute the mechanics, but you have to think ahead and defeat your opponent mentally as well. In order to accomplish this skill, one must put forth a lot of effort to build this skill level and actually making it officially as a professional is not a career path to be taken lightly. A typical job as a pro gamer can have up to 10 hours of gameplay everyday. Now some of you can handle 1 or 2 hours of intensive gaming, but after that, it becomes extremely tiring and tedious and you will want to do something else...but you don't have that kind of time. Now with games like RPGs, you can do that easily since the action level and focus level needed are not that high at all and the enjoyment of the storyline is a nice break from all that hard gaming.

That amount of serious work gives some players that mental image that they worked hard to get where they are at and when the see a casual gamer just inputing cheats and blazing through the game once, it makes them feel like they're just cheating themselves out of the whole hard work -> great reward thing. Not to mention that the records on "Tool Assisted Runs" feel really cheap even if they're not counted seperately. This starts a very elitist way of thinking that these professional oriented players are the better players and the game should belong to them because they see the meta-game as much more than fun, they see it as an art.

It's really hard to understand until you get into competitive gaming yourself and you see some extremely high level playing done by two professionals. It becomes the case of "the fight between two people or the game itself tells a story of the person playing it".

Of course once players begin to mature in their life, they will learn to just leave casuals to have their fun and that cheating themselves in video games isn't causing harm to others and to let them have their fun. Until then, sometimes players take the game a bit too seriously.
    Your bitterness, I will dispel

Good to know. I'd cry if they lock my Steam account and I can't play MW2.

You can always use a program that strips Steam from the game and you play without it. Kind of like how FOSE works with Fallout 3 and the same with Oblivion as it also allows you to play without having to have the game disc in the tray as well.
