I've just reinstalled my pc and of course Win7N does not come with Media Player and file in subject is related to WMP. I don't want to install 300 MB KB file from Microsoft.com just to play movies I have VLC for that. Has anyone else seen this issue before and how did you fix it?

Another question is why do trainers require WMP components to operate?

    Thanks,

To start with, why don't you want to install WMP? And what's more WMP it's better than vlc in different ways(if you have K-lite Codec pack installed). OK and what kind file is KB ?

A lot of people I know use VLC, because they don't want to use Codec-packs, which often don't have all the codecs one wants and install stuff most people don't want on their PC. VLC doesn't need any codecs outside it's own installation.

And the question, why a trainer needs the WMP to operate is imho a very interesting one.

The trainers utilize an API framework that is known as DirectShow which is a Microsoft technology that is implemented with the Windows Media program files. VLC does not utilize this API framework because it is not feasible for the concept of Free and Open Source platform (and it would cause havoc with it being cross platform). Also note that due to DS being a proprietary and complex API framework, alternatives to it are few (and probably non-existent).

Filters (or "media codecs" as they are commonly known) that are designed for the framework that VLC uses will not work with the DS framework and vice-versa.

EDIT: The DLL file you're referring to contains the Media Platform Framework which is the successor to DS and will process DS filters as well (this is specifically for Windows Vista and onward).
