There is a very easy method to get instant research:

You can create an scientist with a high price in gold and 73 free research. Then you quit the game and replace modified .xml file with original .xml. That's all. And remember: always buy the scientist, otherwise your city will be useless (i detected this bug playing, too many turns in production).

With Win 7 you must run Notepad in admin mode. I recommend always making a backup firstly.
