    Disclaimer:
    Before you read this,
know that this is slighty biased,
and know that I've tried nVidia in that past aswell
(XFX 8800, which was a lovely card,
but unfortunately died last year after only 2 years of operation)

I don't know why people just got to have 2 graphic cards,
I got just one XFX Radeon HD 5850,
and I can run every game currently on the market at max with 2048x1152 resolution

    My config:

GPU: XFX Radeon HD 5850 1 GB: $345 vs nVidia GT 480 $600
    CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 BE @ 3.21 Ghz: $215 vs i7 @ 3.06 Ghz $429
(The one at 3.2 Ghz which is comparable to mine costs $806 o_O)
Motherboard: Asus Crosshair III: $225 vs Asus Rampage III $343

Choosing ATI/AMD combo over Intel/nVidia saves me:
    $255 for the GPU
    +$214 for the CPU
    +$118 for the mobo
    =$587 saved for comparable specs.
    (Granted, thats Norwegian prices,
don't know about your price differences though)

And some my specs outranks Intels,
    like my CPU is better,
mobo doesn't really matter THAT much,
and granted, you'll have 512 more megs of video ram,
but I could just choose a slighty more expensive ATI that would still be alot cheaper and better then the the nVidia,
like say HD 5870, which although has "only" 1 Gig of ram,
but has 4.8 Ghz memory clock speed,
compared to GTX 480's 3.7 Ghz,
or I could be so blunt as to choose HD 5970,
which costs about the same as the 480,
but wipes the floor with the 480 with its 2 Gigs of ram,
and 4 Ghz memory clock speed.

Ah, here I go fanboy ranting again,
its not my place to say what people wants to spend their money on :P
