CHEATfactor Game Review
by Joe Sinicki
Presentation 4/10
The maps in War of the Vikings look decent enough with impressive draw distances and some cool effects but they don't serve the game at all. They even managed to ruin some battles with their counter intuitive layouts.
Gameplay 3/10
Paradox Interactive seems to be unsure of what they want War of the Vikings to be. The tutorial teaches you to be a skilled fighter worrying about timing and precision but that goes out the window when you actually get on the battlefield and everything melts down to a messy bar room brawl.
Lasting Appeal 3/10
There's some decent gameplay to be found if you know where to look but it is such a mess of a game that it'll be hard to enjoy even those moments.
Overall 3/10
War of the Vikings tries to make you believe that there's depth and skill involved but quickly shows you it's true colors - it's a frustrating and often glitchy experience that doesn't live up to the Paradox Interactive name.

It's made clear very quickly that Paradox Interactive doesn't know what it wants its game, War of the Vikings to be. Playing through the tutorial, no one would blame you for believing that it's a game that focuses on intimate battles, relying timing and execution. But nah, screw that, once you get into the actual game it's little more than a cluster proportions that's reminiscent of an awkward child tripping over it's own shoes. It's a messy and gltichy game that tries to do a lot but fails oh so miserably.

"...a frustrating mix of ideas that should work but don't."

The tutorial level has you sparring with one enemy as you work on your combat, timing and rhythm, but when you get into the actual game it's the exact opposite. Sure, you could try to use these techniques in the battle but the throngs of other players running around aimlessly and trying to hit anything that moves will continuously interrupt you. Imagine that you have two Vikings figures in front of you and you're trying to set them up in a cool display, but before you could even do anything with them someone drops a whole bag of other figures on top of them. Now imagine that they keep doing this - this is what War of the Vikings feels like, a frustrating mix of ideas that should work but don't.

The barroom brawl structure of War of Vikings is incredibly counter intuitive to the entire idea of the game as well. There are ranged classes like archers but most of the maps are so small and don't allow for you to get enough distance from the battle to get a good enough shot off and the few that you are able to do so, are almost too large and don't allow for you to get a good position at all. On top of all of that, War of the Vikings takes away XP from players who attack their own teammates, a great idea but the battles are such a mess that you can't help but hit your own teammates and you're left with choosing whether you want to jump in and risk your XP or just wait on the sidelines until most of your teammates are gone and you can just start attacking.

"... full of glitches and development missteps..."

While the maps look decent enough, War of the Vikings is so full of glitches and development missteps that you'll have no reason to ever explore them. On the smaller maps I constantly spawned into objects (even once spawning into another player) because there just wasn't enough room in the level. It was frustrating to have to keep respawning just to get to a point where I could begin the match.

War of the Vikings is the gaming equivalent of the old bait and switch tactic. It tries to make you believe that there's depth and skill involved but quickly pulls the rug out from under your feet and shows you it's true colors - a mess of a game that requires almost no skill but rather just plain luck. It's a frustrating and often glitchy experience that doesn't live up to the Paradox Interactive name. War of the Vikings is nothing short of a mess, though it tries it's hardest to convince you that it's not.
