This is a tough and there are a lot of cards to collect this time around so hold on to your slacks people. There are quite a few Yu-Gi-Oh games these days, it almost seems that this may be close to becoming the new Pokemon. People needed a new fad and Yu-Gi-Oh was born. Well with that done let’s go over on this guide’s nuts n’ bolts. The guide is very simple to follow; I’ve tried to make it as easy to read so there is little frustration. You know when you come across a guide and all the writing looks the same and it’s hard to tell which section is which. Well my guides are set up so that you can defiantly notice when there is a break in sections. Those are the big ribbons that you can see (look below). Then when there are sub heads those are marked in boxes made from “~~~” and sub-sub headings are underlined. Seems simple? Well it is. Well it seems I have ran of things to say. REVIEW |_____ \ | _______________________________ | / \ |/ | | \| / / \ | | / \ /______/ \______\ Another Yu-Gi-Oh game to grace your GBA. 9/10 Intro ----- Yet again there is another Yu-Gi-Oh game for the GBA. But that isn’t a bad thing, because this is just as good as the other Yu-Gi-Oh card games on the GBA, so don’t think right away that it is another boring game clone, because it isn’t. It’s no doubt the number one reason that there are a lot of Yu-Gi-Oh games is the fact that they are so fun to play, Think of this as a new-aged Pokemon. Once again there is a lot to do in this as in the other game. All of the cards are waiting in the game, it’s up to you go out and collect all of them. It’s time to duel! Graphics 7/10 ------------- Well the graphic aren’t a big thing in Worldwide Edition. The look of this game is very basic but it doesn’t look overdone and lame. The only real times that you can see where the graphic are being used well is when you have a look at the cards themselves and when you meet up with some of the characters in the game. There are no flashy animations when the Monsters are attacking in the duel which is a bit of a disappointment. It would be great to see the Monsters fighting it out with their attacks but instead when attacking you get to see the faces of both cards and then a number appears as a result of the attack. The characters in the game sure look good great though, they are very well done, they look just as they do in the TV show. Controls 9/10 ------------- The controls are very good for this game they are very simple and very easy to remember. There is not fancy movements and annoying functions in the game. The Field is a bird’s-eye-view so you can see everything properly and clearly on screen. There’s no strange degree angle like in Dungeon Dice Monsters which is a relief. You will barely use buttons like L an R, you will be using A, B and the Control Pad a lot of the time which is great for someone who hates having to keep shifting their hands all of the place and likes to keep it cool. Play Time 9/10 -------------- There is a lot to do in this game and this is the only reason that it will take you so long to complete the game. There are a lot of duellists that you will get to battle against it Battle City and there are well over 1000 cards for you to collect. So you will need to just keep on playing if you want to do everything. This game will take you many hours to complete. Gameplay 10/10 -------------- This is where the game shines. The duelling is great in Worldwide Edition. For those who don’t know what the duelling is about its quite easy when you get the hang of it. The game starts with you drawing 5 cards from your deck. Then when it’s your turn you have the option to set or summon Monster Cards to the playing Field. The weaker the Monster the easier it is to summon it. If you were to try and summon a stronger Monster you may need to sacrifice some of the Monsters currently on your side of the Field to play the card. When there are 2 Monsters on the Field and they both belong to each players you can battle them. To determine who’s Monster is the winner of the battle you have to see which Monster has the stronger Attack Points than the other. Then when the Monster with the higher Attack points attacks the opposing Monster, the opposing Monster is defeated. Then the winner is a little bit closer to victory. You see because when a Monster is defeated the difference between their Attack Points is taken away from the loser’s Life Points. Life Points are what you need to have a lot of the whole time that you are duelling. You will start off with 8000 Life Points each and when somebody runs out of Life Points the other duellist is the winner of the game. But there isn’t just Monster Cards, there are also Effect Monsters, Ritual Monsters, Fusion Monsters, Trap Cards and Magic Cards, each one having different ways to help you out in the duels that you will have in Worldwide Edition Sound 8/10 ---------- The sound is pretty good for this game as well. The same old plinkity-plonkity tunes that you get with all GBA games. But that isn’t so bad, the tunes are forgettable and you won’t catch yourself humming them when you’re not playing the game. There are hardly any sound effects in the game at all which is a alight downfall. Outro ----- On the final notes all I would like to say is that if you’re a diehard fan of the Yu-Gi-Oh games this is a must have for you. If you are interested in the Yu-Gi-Oh games you should at least have a look into this game and make your opinion from that. So this section will tell you what each one of the areas does and how they can be used. Deck ---- This is where you shuffled cards are. At the start of every turn you must draw one card from here and it will be placed into your hand. There are a few different types of cards that you can draw but I’ll explain those a little later. Hand ---- These are the cards that are in the player’s hand. You can view your own by highlighting them and having a detailed read of them by pressing the A Button on a card. Graveyard --------- When a Monster Card is destroyed or when a Magic or Trap Card has been used up they will go to the Graveyard where they cannot be used again. Unless you have a card that allows you to use one of the cards again. Trap and Magic Card Areas ------------------------- These are the five spots that are located below your Monster Card areas. This is where you can put you Magic and Trap Cards on the Field and them activate them when you can or want to. Monster Card Areas ------------------ These are the five spots that are above the Magic and Trap Card Areas. This is where you can put your Monsters ready for battle. Life Points ----------- At the beginning of a duel you will each start off with 8000 Life Points. When you have none left you lose the duel. I’ll explain this more later. Field Card Area --------------- there are card which are called Field Cards. These will change the Field to an element, such as Mountains. They are placed in this area and they will power up some types of Monsters. Fusion Card Deck ---------------- Your Fusion Cards are placed in this deck. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ CARD EXPLANATION ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now as you know there are more than one type of card, actually there are 6 types of cards, each one has a different colour so you can tell them apart. Here is where I’ll explain then all for you. Yellow Card - This is a Normal Monster. Orange Card – This is an Effect Monster, a Monster with a special ability. Purple Card - This is a Fusion Monster, 2 Monsters becoming one. Green Card - This is a Magic Card. Pink Card - This is a Trap Card. Blue Card - This is a Ritual Monster. Normal Monsters --------------- About half of all of the cards in the game are Normal Monsters. These are the very basic and the very useful types of cards, you will be using a lot of these when you duel in this game. These are essential if you want to do well in this game. Effect Monsters --------------- Monsters that have a special ability with them. Hey may be able to increase ATK of DEF or even send other Monsters to the graveyard. Fusion Monsters --------------- If you are able to fuse to Monsters successfully you can use their Fusion Card. Only some Monsters can fuse with some other Monster. The Fusion Cards are very powerful and they can really help if you want to win the duel. For example, if you fuse a Red Eyes Black Dragon and a Summoned Skull, you can use the Black Skull Dragon (only if you have the Black Skull Dragon Card). Magic Cards ----------- These cards can be used to help you in battle. Trap Cards ---------- These cards can be used to help you in battle. Ritual Monsters --------------- These are very rare and can be very powerful. You will need to do a certain task before you can summon one of these Monsters to the Field. Types and Attributes of Monsters -------------------------------- There are different types of Monsters in the game. The types are the main characteristics of a card while the Attribute the kanji in the corner of the card which is kinda like the family that the card belongs to. Please note that the type of the card has nothing to do with the Attribute of the card. The main point of the different types of Monsters is so you can power them up. But different cards go to different places on the Field. Lets go over how this works. When you want to put down a Monster Card on the Field select it from your hand. The card should appear in front of you. Underneath the card there are 3 options, Card View, Set and Summon. Card View will show you the card close up so you can read all about it and see its picture. Set will put the card on the Field in a face down defense position. Summon will put your card in face up attack position. If you picked a Monster card and it doesn’t show the Set or Summon option, it means that the card is too strong to use at the moment. I will explain later about how to use stronger Monsters. Now I’ll explain Defense and Attack Mode. When you Set a Monster on the Field it will be face down and the card will be sideways. When a Monster card is sideways it means that it is in Defense Mode. This means that if the card is destroyed you won’t lose any Life Points but you won’t be able to attack until next turn when you can put it into Attack Mode. In Attack Mode you can attack other Monsters or at your opponent directly. More on this in the next section which is on Life Points. When you have had a card in Defense mode and you would like to put it into Attack Mode, all you have to do it is select the card and choose either Flip or Attack Position. How Cards are Used: Magic and Trap Cards ---------------------------------------- When you want to use a Magic Card or a Trap Card select it and you will be able to select either Card View or Set. Setting the card will place it on the second row of your side of the Field. These are where the Trap and Magic Cards go. Then when you want to use the magic Card or trap card that is on the Field just select it and choose Activate to use its effect. Some Magic and Trap Cards can only be used when a specific event occurs. When this event does happen a white box will ask you if you would like to activate the Trap or Magic card that you have on the Field or Hand. (Only some cards can be activate directly form the hand.) Choose yes if you would like to use that card. Because some cards can only be activated at a certain part of the duel there are different types of Magic and Trap Cards. Below tells you what each of them are. To find these icons on the card just look in the top right corner of the card. Plus Sign – Equip. This card is equipped to Monster. When the Monster is destroyed so is this card. Lightning – Quick Effect. This means that you can activate this card even if it’s not your turn. Infinite Symbol – Continuous. This card stays in the game until the player using it removes it or the card is destroyed. Arrow – Counter. Counter a move of you opponents or discard one of their cards. Star – Field. These change the type of Field you’re on to increase the ATK and DEF of some types of Monsters. Flame – Ritual. Use this card to Summon a specific Monster to the Field. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ HOW DO YOU WIN THE DUEL? (LIFE POINTS) ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To win a duel all you have to is reduce your opponent’s Life Points to 0. You each will start off with 8000 at the beginning of the duel. Life Points go down whe you attack a Monster or when you use a card that can reduce your opponent’s Life Points. Lets go over ways to reduce Life Points. Attacking Monsters ------------------ When you have a Monster on the Field that is in Attack Mode and you opponent also has a Monster on the Field, you can attack it if you want to. But you must check first to see if you Monster will be able to defeat the opposing Monster. So have a look at your card. Notice the 2 sets of numbers on the bottom of the screen? The first number is your Monster’s Attack Points. The second is you Opponent’s Defense Points. Now have a look at your opponent’s Monster. If your Attack points are larger than the attack points of your opponent’s Monster, you can attack it and defeat it. Your Opponent will also lose Life Points by the difference between the 2 Attack Points. For Example: You Monster has 1000 attack points. You opponent’s Monster has 800 attack points. When you attack it and defeat it, you Opponent will lose 200 Life Points. (1000-800=200) Then the defeated card is sent to the Graveyard. What happens when your opponent’s Monster is in Defense Mode though? If so, instead of looking at the opposing Monster’s Attack Points, see it Defense Points. If you attack is stronger, you will defeat it, but your opponent won’t lose any Like Points because the Monster was in Defense Mode. If you accidentally attack a Monster that is stronger than you (whether in the opposing Monster is in Attack or Defense Mode) YOU will lose the difference between the points. When you have more than one Monster on your side of the Field you can use all of them to attack. So if you have 4 Monsters all 4 of them can attack (one after another) in the one turn. Direct Attacking ---------------- If you have a Monster(s) on the Field and you opponent has no Monsters at all on their side of the Field you can still attack. But you will be attacking your opponent’s Life Points directly. So one of you Monsters has 400 Attack Points, they will lose 400 Life Points. Remember that all of your Monsters can attack in one turn (one after another). Magic and Trap Cards -------------------- There are many Magic and Trap cards which can reduce and also increase Life Points for both you and your opponent. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ SUMMONING MONSTERS ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Normal Summon ------------- You can Summon weak Monsters onto the Field without a fuss. All you have to know is that their Level has to be 4 or under. To see a Monster’s Level you look at the card there will be little orange and yellow star with a number under it. The number means how many Levels it is. If you go to the Card View you can see all of the stars for yourself. If the number is 1, 2, 3 or 4 you can Summon it straight away. Tribute Summon -------------- As I explained earlier on in the guide, you can only summon weaker Monsters at first and then later you will be able to Summon the stronger Monsters of your deck. This works by the Tribute Rule. The stronger the Monster you want to Summon is, the more Monsters on your side of the Field that you will need to Tribute and send to the Graveyard. But how do you know how many Monsters will you need to Tribute? Easy. When you look at a card there will be little orange and yellow star with a number under it. The number means how many Levels it is. If you go to the Card View you can see all of the stars for yourself. The higher Level of stars a card is, the more Monsters you need Tribute. Use the table below so you will know how many Monsters that you will need to Tribute to Summon a high Level Monster. You must remember though that you can only Summon (or Set) ONE MONSTER PER TURN. Rather it’s best to even out your deck with all sorts of different Leveled Monsters. Flip Summon ----------- This is when you choose a card that has been SET on the Field (Remember that a card that was Set is in face-down Defense Position) then you place the card in face-up Attack position. This is called a Flip Summon. A note you should take on this is that because the card was already on the Field when it was Summoned you can still Set or Summon a Monster from your hand. But this isn’t the only way that a card can be Flip Summoned. When a Set Monster is attacked you have to turn the card over anyway, so this does count as a Flip Summon even though you didn’t perform it. One more thing to remember. Some Effect Monsters have Effects that will only work if the card if Flip Summoned. So if even if you Set Effect Monster was attacked, it’s Effect will still come into play. Ritual Summon ------------- There are some very powerful and rare cards that can only be used in the game if you have the Ritual Magic Card to Summon it to the Field. So to use this Monster you will need both a Magic Card and the matching Ritual Monster card to use it. To Summon these Ritual Monsters you may still need to give up some Monsters as a Tribute. Special Summon -------------- You may have some Magic, Trap or Effect Cards that will allow you to Special Summon. Special Summon means that you might be able to go through your deck for a certain type of card to Summon it straight to the Field. Or you may be able to use a higher Level Monster (5+) and not have to Tribute Monster for it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ YOUR FIRST DUEL ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So let’s have a little summary about what I’ve wrote in this guide. (Jesus I feel like I just wrote a novel) When you meet up with somebody on the Battle City Map the Duel will begin. First you will have a chat with your Opponent and then you will see 3 cards. Each card has a hand signal on it. Basically, this is Rock, Paper, Scissors. Remember that: Paper beats Rock Rock beats Scissors Scissors beats Paper If you win the game you will decide who goes first in the Duel. If you lost your Opponent does. Then the duel really begins. Let’s say that you go first in the Duel. Let’s go over how your Turn works out. There are 5 Turn Phases, lets go over them and find out what each of them mean. When you want to enter the next Phase press the Start Button and choose the Phase that you wish to enter. The Phases ---------- Draw Phase – This happens at the very start of your turn. You must draw a card from your deck before you can do anything. Main Phase 1 – This is where you can Set/Summon a Monster and lay down Magic and Trap Cards onto the Field. Battle Phase – Use your Summoned Monsters to Attack you Opponent’s Monsters or you opponent’s Life points Directly. (Use can’t Attack on the first turn of the Duel.) You can also choose to end you turn here or enter Main Phase 2. Main Phase 2 – You can place down any additional Magic or Trap Cards (no Monsters) onto the Field. Ending Phase – Control goes to your opponent. Then you and your opponent swap turns until one of you turns out to be the victor of the Duel. Victory! -------- If you successfully win the Duel against your opponent you will be able to choose a Booster Pack. A Booster pack contains 5 cards for you to have so you can add them to your deck or modify you deck to the way you like it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ HANDY HINTS ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Automatically Win ----------------- There are ways that you can automatically win a Duel. You will need to have a set of certain cards and here are the lists. All you have to do is have all of these cards in your hand at the one time and you win the Duel. HOW TO BUILD A DECK |_____ \ | _______________________________ | / \ |/ | | \| / / \ | | / \ /______/ \______\ This is the great part about card games. Choosing your favorite types of cards and using them all in a deck that you have made yourself and that you think is a clear winner. Well have a read through this section of the guide for some tips about building and customizing you deck to make it strong. Building your Deck Menu and Options ----------------------------------- When you press the R Button (while on the Battle City Map). You can go into the Menu. Here you can go to you Deck. Trade cards or Duel with a friend. Put in passwords to get cards. Go into the Deck Menu to start. First you see a list of all the cards in your Trunk. The Trunk is where you keep all of your spare cards that you win. From the Trunk you can place Cards into the Deck or into the Side Deck. When you click on a Card with the A Button you will bring up a menu on the top of the screen. Read below to see what each of the functions do. Card View – Take a close look at the card you have chosen. To Main Deck – Move this card to your Deck. To Side Deck – Move this card to your Side Deck. List Filter – Filter out types of cards so you can find and view them a little easier. Statistics – See the percentages of the different types of cards that you own. Exit – Return to the Menu. Weak and Strong Monsters ------------------------ It’s a good idea to have a few strong Monsters in you deck but in order to use them, remember that you will need to have some weaker Monsters so you can Tribute them in battle. So put in a good few weaker Monsters and not too many strong Monsters. You don’t won’t to go right into battle and only have strong cards and not be able to use them because all of you weak monsters are somewhere in your deck (this will happen whether you like it or not). The best types of weak Monsters that you should put into your deck are the Monsters with high Attack and Defense Points and that are on level 4. With lots of these in your deck you can’t go wrong. Magic and Trap Cards -------------------- These are a must have for any type of great Dueling Deck. You will need some sort of back up plan if something is to go wrong in the battle. Using Magic and Trap Cards are great ways of weakening you opponent so they won’t be able to recover so quickly. There are some great Magic cards that can attack you opponent’s Life Points directly which are always nice to have in a deck (like Ookazi). There are even some rarer cards which can destroy all your opponent’s Monsters in one turn. Traps are also a great way of coming back from an attack, by countering you attack to your opponent these along with Magic Cards are great to have in the Deck. Ritual and Fusion Monsters -------------------------- These are the strongest types of Monsters in the game. Problem is that t takes a bit of an effort to use them in a Duel. I think Ritual Cards are a great way to increase you chance of winning in a Duel. But I don’t really like Fusion Card at all. Instead of having to only have 2 cards in your hand to use a Ritual Card, you need 3 and that can be a little tedious. But if you want to add them to you deck go ahead, but only add 1, 2 tops! Field Cards ----------- These are a good way to increase the Attack and Defense of your Monsters on your side of the field. If you like to have a themed deck (who doesn’t?) you can add your Field types card to your deck so you can power up. This is good unless you opponent uses the same type of cards as you do. Then if this happens, don’t use it. But there are Field Cards that don’t increase the power of a type of Monster, some of them allow you to use certain cards while playing. Like the Fusion Gate Card allows you to use Fusion Monsters without the Polymerization Card. The Size of you Deck -------------------- You can have between 40 to 60 cards in your Deck. Less cards means that you get the ones you won’t quicker, but you could lose quicker. A larger deck decreases the chance of getting the card you want but you can last longer. The best thing to do to even it out to about 50 cards. Fill it up with Monsters, Magic and Trap Cards. Once you’re ready try out you new deck. This file will be your saved game so that you can come back to it anytime you want to. So once you have entered your name you will be told what the game is about. Then you will see 3 decks to choose from, a Black, Red and Green Deck. Each deck has different cards in it and it’s a good idea that you read through what’s in each of the deck, and make your choice from that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~ BLACK STARTER DECK ~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a basic deck that I recommend for the first time players of this game. Yugi really depends on getting his strong Monsters in to the battle early. So by attacking all of his weak Monsters you he won’t be able to summon the stronger Monsters in his deck. This is a good way to win but I hope you can summon some strong Monsters early in the game as well because his Magnet Warrior cards are something to worry about. Each of them are Level 4 Monsters so they can be sent to the Field straight away plus they are pretty tough. If you can summon something strong before he puts these on the Field that would be great. But this doesn’t mean that you cannot lose. Yugi has the Valkyrion the Magna Warrior card which means he can summon it using Alpha, Beta and Gamma as Tributes even if they are in his hand. The best thing to do if you want to defeat these is if you have some weak Monsters in your hand and you don’t mind if you lose some life points, put it on the Field to draw out his Monsters into attacking it. Then you can destroy them on the next turn. Another thing about Yugi’s Deck is that he seems to always have some sort of back up plan. A lot of his Magic Cards and Trap Cards will be of a large nuisance. Watch out for his Magic Cylinder and Mirror force cards because these will do some harsh damage to your side of the Field if he uses them on you. Yugi is known for using Spellcaster type cards in his deck. A great card to have in your deck would be the Last Day of Witch. This card destroys all face-up Spellcaster Cards on the Field. This would really come in handy in a bad situation. Yugi also has 2 cards which he will use on you if he is in trouble. The Dark Hole card will destroy all the Monsters on the Field and Raigeki will destroy all of the Monsters on your side of the Field. So you might not want to keep putting down lots of Monsters just in case he decides to use these on you. In conclusion to defeating Yugi, I believe the best way is to take him out as fast as you can and defeating his weaker Monsters. He has quite a few strong Level 4 Monsters that he will put onto the Field right away. Joey also relies on being able to use his fusion Monsters, such as the Thousand Dragon and Black Skull Dragon. Joey’s best ay to win is to use his many Level 4 Monsters so he can use his stronger Monster when they get to him, he doesn’t have that many, but when he uses them I hope you have a plan to save yourself. I think that the best way to defeat him is to use his own strategy. So summons some strong Level 4 Monsters and get your stronger ones out when you get them. If you can get your stronger Monsters out before he does you will be at the advantage so you can take out his weak Monsters before he can summon his stronger ones. Joey also has 3 Polymerization cards so he will be able to get the cards soon into the game and even if he doesn’t he can use the Fusion Sage card to get them out of his deck. You should watch out for his Fusion Monsters because they are quite tough to beat. Especially he strongest card, the Black Skull Dragon. His other Magic Cards aren’t that much to worry about. Joey has 2 Magic-Arm Shield cards in his deck. What this card does is force your attack Monster to attack one of your defense position Monsters, this isn’t so bad unless you were using that Monster to summon something stronger.
