Super Smash Bros. Melee is a trademark of Nintendo and HAL Laboratories. All characters appearing are trademarked by Nintendo and their respective development teams/houses. After one SSBM board user (MrTonyT) requested a spoiler-free guide to unlocking the secrets in SSBM (in other words, knowing how to do it but not what you *get*) I noticed that there was indeed no such FAQ here, and since I'm just the niche-filling guy :) I thought that writing such an FAQ would be easy enough. Indeed, this will be a fairly quick and short affair, but it gets the job done. You'll notice that unlike usual, there'll be no table of contents here. That's because it would be partially defeating the purpose of the FAQ to separate it into unlockable characters, stages, etc anyway. I've got the PAL version, and there are a couple of places which say that you *may* have to do something in the US version. That basically translates to "I heard this is necessary, but I don't have the version and can't check myself, so I might be wrong." Here are the specific tasks. They're mostly in the recommended order to do them, but you can rearrange stuff where it's not said you can't. Sometimes you need to unlock a secret character and do stuff later with them, in which case I'll say something like "use the character you got from step 42". Basically, if you feel that even knowing you're getting a character spoils something, don't read past where you're up to. And just in case you thought they were, Sonic and Tails are NOT in SSBM. 1) Firstly, you should go and use all 14 of the original characters at least once in a VS match. Don't cancel the match halfway, you need to finish each. 2) Now or even before step 1, beat Classic or Adventure mode with anyone. 3) Also, beat it with Mario.. 4) ..and with the character you got from step 1. 5) Play Adventure mode with anyone, and finish the first level with a '2' in the units digit of your seconds. Meaning, "1:42:45" or "5:92:23" or "3:02:99" just to give some examples. Then proceed to beat Adventure mode. 6) Now go and beat either Classic or Adventure with at least 10 different people. You *may* have to use Link and Zelda and 8 characters of your choice in the US version - you can use anyone in the PAL version. 7) At some point, you'll need to rack up a total of 50 VS matches. These can be done the quickest by setting Stock to 1 and just jumping off the stage right away. 8) Likewise, you'll also need to have a total of 100 VS matches... 9) .. as well as 150 VS matches.. 10) .. and even 200 VS matches. 11) In addition, you'll need to have 20 hours of play on record at some point. 700 VS matches also works, but that honestly sounds like it would take longer and certainly be more tedious. If you plug in two controllers (and you probably need to do a 2 player VS match) then you only need 10 hours of play. 3 controllers, about 7 hours and a bit. 4 controllers, just 5. Once you've got 20 hours of play, play a VS match. You don't need to do this specifically now, and you'll probably find you'll get the 20 hours later on. 12) Go to Stadium under 1P, and play Multi-Man Melee. Specifically, win the 100-Man Melee. The easy way to do this is to just stand there and use DK's hand slap (Down+B) the whole time. It may still take one or two tries. 13) While you're there, do the 15-Minute Melee as well. Same tactic. 14) The other thing to do in Stadium is to get over 400 metres (PAL/European version & Japanese NTSC version) or about 1320 feet (US NTSC version) in the Homerun Contest. You *may* have to do this with Yoshi in the US version - you don't need to in the PAL version. There are several ways to do it, and I can only suggest you read a relevant FAQ. They will have spoilers in terms of secret character names, so you might want to hold off doing this until the game tells you you've unlocked all the characters. 15) Get the Birdo or Pidgit trophy. These are both "random" trophies that show up randomly in the lottery, Grab The Trophies game in Classic, or lying around in the levels in Adventure. 16) Now, sooner or later you'll need to tackle the exceptionally evil Event Mode. As you complete specific numbers of events, more will open up. For later events, you'll also need to have specific characters unlocked. If they won't open at the time, come back later after you've gotten more or all of the characters. The final event will only be open after all previous events have been beaten. You'll unlock several things from playing through Event Mode. 17) Get the final character by beating Classic, Adventure or Target Test with everyone else. I recommend Target Test, because.. 18) ...you can unlock something else by beating Target Test with every character, and this will be most of the work done there and then. 19) Beat Classic mode with the character you unlocked in step 17. 20) Unlock all the characters for another bonus. 21) Beat the gameplay mode you unlocked in step 20. 22) Once you have every stage and character, another feature will be unlocked. 23) Rack up a total of 5000 KOs in the Misc. records. This can take quite a long time. The fastest way I know of is to pick four light characters set to level 9 CPUs, Stock 99, Damage Ratio 2.0 and the only items set to Pokeballs and Red Shells if you play on a certain level unlockable from Event Mode, which is the level I recommend (otherwise, any small level). The match should be over in about half an hour, adding nearly 400 KOs to your total. When you have over 5000, play a VS match with at least one human player. **NOTE: That is all the major unlockables in SSBM. From this point onwards, the only prizes are trophies. These are quite useless for anything other than looking at, so don't kill yourself trying to accomplish some of the harder objectives for anything other than the sake of completedness. 24) Beat Classic with all the characters. 25) Beat Adventure with all the characters. 26) Beat the unlockable 1-P mode with all the characters. 27) Beat Adventure on Normal, in under 18 minutes, without continuing at all. 28) Beat the unlockable 1-P mode without continuing. 29) Beat Adventure mode on Hard without continuing. 30) Beat Classic mode on Hard without continuing. 31) Beat All-Star mode on Hard, but you can continue. That doesn't mean it'll be easy. I hope you've stocked up a couple hundred coins, because it's 10 coins a continue. 32) Get a 21 hit combo in training mode. Just back them into a corner and use someone with an infinite combo (press A rapidly), like Kirby. 33) Get a total combo score of 126 in training mode. 34) Get a total Target Test time of under 12 minutes, 30 seconds. 35) Get 450 metres (European PAL version, Japanese NTSC version) or about 1500 feet (US NTSC version) in the Homerun Contest. 36) Get a TOTAL Homerun Contest score of over 5000 metres (European PAL version, Japanese NTSC version) or about 16,000 feet (US NTSC version). 37) Play Endless Melee and get at least 100 KOs. DK's Down-B again. 38) Play Cruel Melee and get at least 5 KOs. 39) Play 100 Coin VS matches. 40) Play 1000 VS matches. That's a lot. 41) Earn over 1000 coins in total. You don't need to have them on you, you just need to have received a cumulative total of 1000 coins. 42) Have a Pikmin save on your memory card. 43) Receive every bonus in the game at least once, so that it's added to your bonus record. Check a bonuses FAQ and good luck. 44) See Celebi. You need to have all characters, levels and 5000 total KOs to be able to see Celebi at all (from a Pokeball used in the game), and even then it's rare. Well, that's it for this fairly quick 'n' dirty listing. I do hope someone benefits from it. In conclusion, I'd like to thank.. HAL Laboratories and Nintendo for making a fantastic game. CJayC for running an excellent website and hosting this FAQ. Chris Memolo's guide for specific information on how to get some trophies. MrTonyT. I don't know you, but you provided useful inspiration :) Until next time.. --Xythar Darkmoon, Master Magus
