You have to take EV's[effort values] into account, along with how good the pokemon actaully is. Many pokemon aren't even worth traning, such as Linoone, unless you want the pickup ability or something. Legendaries, though, are very good, but I don't use them so I'll address them very lightly. Now, how to make a sucessful team. There are many things that you have to take into account while making a good team. As I said before, the main one is if the pokemon is actaully good or not. You also have to take into account the pokemon's weaknesses and its strengths. For example, if you have a Sceptile [grass], when it is out, your opponents are going to send out fire, flying, ice, and posion pokemon. Because people are going to send out those types of pokeomon, you should have moves that counter those types. An example of a good moveset for a Sceptile would be Earthquake, [to counter posion] Leaf Blade,[pure power] Thunderpunch, [to counter flying and some ice] and a defensive move such as double team. That moveset counters Sceptile's weaknesses, so it can easily defeat it's opponents. That is a quick breifing on how to make a good team, and an example of one. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.1 - Pokemon Worth Training ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Very few pokemon in Emerald are actaully worth training. In the list below, it states the pokemon that are worth training and what they are good for. Sceptile (Speed and Sp. Attack) Blaziken (Attack and Sp. Attack) Swampert (HP and Attack) Shiftry (Attack) Gardevior(Sp. Attack and Sp. Defense) Slaking (HP and Attack)****MAKE SURE IT KNOWS SKILL SWAP**** Aggron (Defense) Flygon (Speed) Crawdaunt(Attack) Claydol (Sp. Defense) Milotic (Sp. Attack, Sp. Defense, HP) Dusclops (Sp. Defense, Defense) Absol (Attack) Walrein (HP) Relicanth(HP, Defense) Salamence(Attack, Sp.Attack) Metagross(Defense) Latias (Sp. Defense) Latios (Sp. Attack, Speed) Kyogre (HP, Sp. Attack, Sp. Defense) Groudon (HP, Attack, Defense) Rayquaza (Sp. Attack, Attack) Deoxys (Speed, Attack, Sp. Attack, Defense, Sp. Defense)****Stats depend on what game it is in. In Emerald, Deoxys is in speed Form**** Starmie (Speed, Sp. Attack, Sp. Defense) Rhydon (Defense, Attack) Obviously, these are all evolved forms of pokemon. There are other pokemon, but these are the few really good ones. However, if you use only these pokemon, your game will be very boring and uneventful. Use these pokemon if you are going to go the Battle Frontier, Trainer Hill, or battle one of your friends-- these pokemon dominate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.2 - Effort Values(EV's) and Macho Brace ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is probably the most complicated thing in the history of pokemon. Each and every pokemon holds effort values, ranging from 1 - 3 points. There can be HP EV's, Attack EV's, Defense EV's, Special Attack EV's, Special Defense EV's, and Speed EV's. These "EV's" control how much stat your pokemon gains when it levels up. For example, if you have a Sceptile, and it has a nature against Sp. Defense, you'll want to train it with a lot of Sp. Defense Ev's. How do you know what pokemon have what EV's though? Well, here are some examples. A Sceptile has AMAZING speed, right? This will result in it giving out 3 Speed EV's when you defeat it. A Tentacruel has very good sp. defense, so when you defeat it, your pokemon will gain 3 Sp. Defense EV's. However, there is more to EV's than that. For every 4 EV's that you gain in ONE stat, your pokemon's stat will go up one in that area. For example, your Sceptile gains 12 Sp. Defense EV's by defeating 4 Tentacruel. When Sceptile levels up [concidering that it didn't gain any more EV's in that area] it's Sp. Defense will go up by 3 [4 goes into 12 3 times]. A pokemon can only have up to 510 EV's in one stat though. Here is a list of pokemon that give HP Ev's: 3 HP EV's 2 HP EV's Nidoqueen Nidorina Clefable Clefairy Wigglytuff Jigglypuff Mew Lickatung Azumarril Chancey Celebi Khangaskhan Slaking Laparas Exploud Vaporeon Walrein Snorlax Jirachi Noctowl Lanturn Marril Quagsire Wobbuffet Blissey Shedinja Loudred Hairyama Swalot Wailord Whishcash Triopius Glalie Sealeo Attack EV's 3 Attack EV's 2 Attack EV's Nidoking Beedrill Machamp Arbok Victirebell Nidorino Dragonite Parasect Blaziken Primape Tyranitar Arcanine Swampert Machoke Shiftry Weepinbell Salamence Kingler Groudon Hitmonlee Rhydon Seaking Pinsir Gyarados Flareon Dragonair Feraligatr Aridos Granbull Scizor Heracross Ursaring Entei Pupitar Marshstomp Larvitar Nuzleaf Breloom Sharpedo Zangoose Solorock Crawdaunt Armaldo Banette Absol Rayquaza Defense EV's 3 Defense EV's 2 Defense EV's Poliwrath Wartortle Golem Metapod Metagross Kakuna Regirock Sandslash Aggron Graveler Slowbro Cloyster Marowack Weezing Omastar Kabutops Sudowoodo Fortress Steelix Maccargo Skarmory Miltank Silicoon Cascoon Pelliper Larion Torkoal Shelgon Metang Registeel 3 Sp. It gives your pokemon more EV's. But at one cost.... No speed EV's! This thing works wonders if you have a pokemon that is already low on speed and doesn't depend on it, like Aggron or Rhydon, or a pokemon that is really high in speed like a Crobat or a Sceptile. If your Sceptile were to battle 4 Bellossoms (3 Sp. Defense EV's) with the Macho Brace held, you would normally have 12 EV's, but with the Macho Brace, it would get 24. But know it's effects if you use it for too long, your pokemon might end up with a speed of 50 at lv. 100. I suggest using it for only a short time, and not using it too much. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1.3 - Vitamins ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Vitamins are one of the biggest confusions in all of the pokemon games. People think that they are just spending $9800 on some stupid thing that does nothing. They're wrong. Vitamins are one of the mose helpful things in the game, well, when you are training of course. There are six types of vitamins: Carbos, HP Up, Protein, Iron, Zinc, and Calcium. Each vitamin increases the stat it is assigned to by 10 EV's. Carbos increases speed, Hp up increases HP, Protein increases attack, Iron increases defense, zinc increases Sp. Attack, and Calcium increases Sp. Defense. As an example, lets say my Sceptile has 2 EV's in it's SPEED stat. I feed it a Carbos. Now, it has 12 EV's in that stat, so when it levels up, it's speed will increase by 3. There is one flaw with vitamins, though. You can only feed a pokemon 10 vitamins in it's whole life.[no, they can't die] That means my pokemon will only get 100 bonus EV's from vitamins. This is not 10 vitamins in each stat, but 10 vitamins ALTOGETHER. Vitamins are helpful, but they may raise the EV's a little faster than you want. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.4 - Natures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are many natures in pokemon, some are good, and some are bad. It all depends on what you are going to use the pokemon for though. The following natures are all of them, with what they do. NATURE INCREASES DECREASES Adamant Attack Sp. Attack Bashful None None Bold Defense Attack Brave Attack Speed Calm Sp. Defense Attack Careful Sp. Defense Sp. Attack Docile None None Gentle Sp. Defense Defense Hardy None None Hasty Speed Defense Impish Defense Sp. Attack Jolly Speed Sp. Attack Lax Defense Sp. Defense Lonley Attack Defense Mild Sp. Attack Defense Modest Sp. Attack Attack Naive Speed Sp. Defense Naughty Attack Sp. Defense Quiet Sp. Attack Speed Quirky None None Rash Sp. Attack Sp. Defense Relaxed Defense Speed Sassy Sp. Defense Speed Timid Speed Attack Natures really come into play when you are developing a pokemon for the Battle Frontier. If you have a Machamp, all it uses are physical moves, which coorespond with attack. For that Machamp, you would want to have an Adamant nature. Nature also hevaily affects the stats of your pokemon. For a Machamp, it's base attack at lv. 100 is about 400. If you had a nature for attack, its attack at lv 100 would then be around 500. See the difference? Think about what you are going to use the pokemon for, then try to catch a pokemon with the nature that you need. It'll help make your pokemon better. Seriously better. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.5 - Training Strategies ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These are just some tips that I find useful when I play and train my pokemon. 1) Use the Experience Share to raise weak pokemon. 2) Don't battle weak pokemon--It'll screw up your EV's. 3) In double battles, have the pokemon you're training and a really strong one, no matter what level your opponents are. 4) When you need training, go to your Pokenav's Macth call. There might even be a gym leader that you can face! 5) Train off of pokemon that are higher levels than you. 6) A good training spot is Sky Pillar of Victory Road. 7) The Elite Four gives really good money and experience too. 8) Train all types of pokemon, not just one. 9) If you have Firered/Leafgreen, you can go to One Island and face the Karate Guys near the Oasis. Bring a Gengar, because all they have is fighting moves![They can't harm you] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.6 - Sample Teams -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sample Team A- All-Around Rhydon Horn Drill Earthquake- Double battles w/ ele. pokemon Thunder Surf Xatu [For use in double battles with Rhydon] Psychic Reflect- To raise Sp.Def of Rhydon to protect it from water, ice, and grass moves.
