Introduction | |- : - : -| | |__| |__|------------------------------------------|__| |__| Mr. Driller is a relatively long-running series based loosely on Dig Dug. In fact, the main character is evidently the son of the Dig Dug caharacter. I can't speak highly of any of the previous Mr. Driller games, but Drill Spirits, or, DS, is fun puzzle game, when coming from a clean perspective. It doesn't make good use of all of the DS's hardware, but it does allow you to control youe character via touch screen, and it does use both screens at once, to make for one really large screen. But despite being less than impressive on the surface, Mr. Driller DS is a fun game, woth looking into if you need a puzzle game for your DS. __ __ __ __ | | | |------------------------------------------| | (CONTR) | | | |- : - : -| | 2. You can even move, using it, if you'd like. Tapping a block touching your character with the stylus, will cause your driller to drill into the block. Touching the empty space near your character will cause him to move towards where you pointed the stylus. If you use this, it is still reccomended that you use the D-Pad though. It makes climbing onto blocks much easier. __ __ __ __ | | | |------------------------------------------| | (BASIC) | | | |- : - : -| | 3. Game Basics | |- : - : -| | |__| |__|------------------------------------------|__| |__| In this game, you'll be digging down through piles of blocks, in an attempt to reach the bottom. Naturally, blocks fall down from above, as you drill, making the pile less sturdy, but there are other features as well. For sarters, there are only five normal blocks for digging through: Blue Red Green Yellow Purple These ones will bust apart on their own, if several touch eachother after moving. And if, while they are falling, they line up with another one of the same color, they will stop in mid-air. This may sound somewhat confusing, so have a look at the diagrams below: P <------ CHARACTER ___ _|_ ___ |GRN|GRN|RED| If the player were to drill the green block, where he is |___|___|___| standing, the Red block, would not be attatched to anything, |GRN|GRN| and thus, it would fall. When it collides with the Red |___|___| blocks at the bottom, they would match up, and dissapear. |GRN|GRN| |___|___|___ |GRN|RED|RED| |___|___|___| P <--------- CHARACTER ___ _|_ ___ |BLU|RED|RED| If the player were to drill the red block, where he is standing |___|___|___| in this picture, it would seperate the blue block, causing it |BLU|RED| to fall. However, unlike in the picture above, you see another |___|___| blue box next to where it would fall. When the blue block that |RED|RED| was falling touches the left side of it, it would stop. ___|___|___| |RED|RED|RED| |___|___|___| There are also several special types of blocks, and each of these have special effects. There are four blocks of this type, and they are listed below. Circle --> These can be drilled through, but will not break, or stick to other blocks of the same type. They're rare. Brown-X --> These blocks can be drilled through, but it takes some time, and will drain your air, by a large amount. You aren't supposed to drill through them. Metal-X --> You can't drill through these at all. These are only in time attack. Crystal --> These stay for a certain amount of time -- Depending on the level; They are common in Time Attack. Then, on their own, they will explode, often setting off landslides above and below them. And finally, there are items. Simply touching an item will pick it up, and all items have different effects. However, be careful. A block can stop on top of an item, and when you pick up the item, the block above it will drop in about one or two seconds. The items are listed below. Air Capsule ---> This wil lrestore some air. How much, depends on how much of a boost you have with air capsule items. Power Capsule -> Power capsules are available only in Pressure Driller, and they alow you to fire a fire ball with the X button. You can hold up to 4 at a time, and each one, increases your power by 25 percent. Timer ---> These are available only in Time trials. They have a number on them, ranging from 0.5 to 3. When you collect one, that many seconds is deducted from your time. Flip Switch ---> Hitting one of these will cause everything onthe screen to rotate 90 degrees, except you. Thus, all the blocks on the ceiling, will be on the right-wall. This is found only in Time Attack mode. Undergrounder -> These are the blue things that you'll randomly uncover as you drill. When you collect one, if you have a lot of points, you'll get a 1-Up. Otherwise, you get nothing. __ __ __ __ | | | |------------------------------------------| | (CHARS) | | | |- : - : -| | 4. Mission Driller | |- : - : -| | |__| |__|------------------------------------------|__| |__| Mission Driller is the main gameplay mode. It is als othe mode in which you will unlock new drillers. The idea of this mode is very simple: Reach the bottom of the stages, without losing all your lives. It sounds incredibly easy, although you'll quickly find difficulty, when you reach some of the higher levels. There are six different stages in this mode, and all except the Driller Lab -- Which acts as a training level of sorts -- will reward you with a short cutscene, and a new driller, upon victory. You can use items if you want, although in order for your high-scores to be saved, you must not be using any items or upgrades; That means the basic 3 lives, and a limited amount of air restored per air capsule. |--------------------------| | Driller Lab - 300 Meters | |--------------------------| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 1 - Stick to the far right. There's only two brown blocks, for the whole first layer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 2 - Besides brown blocks, this layer consists of only purple and blue blocks. Take them out in large groups at a time. Stay moving, and it won't even matter where you position yourself. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 3 - Try and clear the first two columns on the left as you go. There are several collections of brown blocks, but that's why you have two columns. Move between them as necessary to survive. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |--------------------| | Japan - 500 Meters | |--------------------| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 1 - Try to clear the middle out, but try and have a path to the right open if possible. There are many combos, and capsules there. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 2 - This is made up of red, blue, and yellow blocks, linked together in big chunks. You should be able to keep moving, and drill right on through, without any big stops. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 3 - This is similair to the second layer, except there's only yellow and blue blocks, and there are even larger chunks of the same color together. Just keep on moving. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 4 - This is one of the "normal" layers again. There are a number of brown blocks here as well, so you may have to move around, in unstable areas too. When you have to, hurry up, and get back to a stable area quickly. Drill as quickly as you can, while still thinking about your actions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 5 - This is another avarage layer. Stay to the left for the first half, and you'll have nothing but easy riding. You'll soon reach a wall of brown blocks. Head around it, to the right, then stay on the move, because it's no longer smooth sailing after that. For the most part, the entire screen will be unstable. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |--------------------| | China - 800 Meters | |--------------------| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 1 - Surprisingly, the middle is the most stable area in this layer. Unfortunately, there are brown blocks no matter where you drill. Just keep the middle open, and return there whenever possible. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 2 - Here, you'll only find green, yellow and blue blocks, and they are chained together nicely -- Especially the blue ones. Don't be reckless though; They are extremely unstable all over. Move quickly, but proceed with caution. And count on falling blocks to clear huge paths for you. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 3 - Another average area. Stay to the right, until you start running into frequent brown blocks, then begin digging down the middle of the screen. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 4 - This is one of the smooth areas we all like! Nothing but pink and yellow blocks. Keep drilling, and you'll be fine. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 5 - Start on the far-right column, and drill as far as you can, until you reach a brown block. Then, keep switching between the last, and second-to-last column, drilling, until you near the bottom, where there's a bulk of brown blocks. Step to the middle, and drill the last few meters. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 6 - There's lots of combos here, but for every combo, there is a bulk of brown blocks. Just keep moving, and plan where you are going before you dig -- Because you simply won't survive by trying to stick to one column on this layer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 7 - This is another layer full of combos, although there are many single blocks that will interupt your drilling. You'll have to move left and right frequently, but still, the mid-right is the safest place of the layer. That's not saying much though. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 8 - To be realistic, this layer has no huge combos, has tons of brown blocks, and has virtually no stable areas. Get down as fast as you can, making sure you're always in a position to move sideways, should blocks start falling on you, and try to get through it as quickly as possible. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |---------------------| | India - 1000 Meters | |---------------------| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 1 - Yet another typical layer. Try to stick to the farthest two columns on the right, while in this layer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 2 - This layer consists of only blue, yellow, and green blocks, and has many chains. You won't be able to blast through it like some similair layers, but take it steadily, and keep moving, and you're all set. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 3 - This are has lots of brown blocks, although there are many gaps in them as well. Start by drilling on the far right. That will get you a good 30 meters. From there, just stick to the mid-right, moving as necessary. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 4 - This layer has one major load of brown blocks. Although, there is a pattern. Start on the left, and drill for about 25 meters, until you hit a bunch of the blocks. Then move to the right and continue. Next, head to the middle. You should be close to the bottom by then, so just go for it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 5 - This is a nice break. All blue and yellow blocks, and a nice batch of air capsules to pick up. Just chill out, as you drill. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 6 - This is another layer with very few safe spots. You can start by going down the mid-right, or the mid-left, but you'll have to switch soon, anyway. There are lots of brown blocks, and as you drill, the normal-colored blocks will become unstable. Keep moving, and don't look back. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 7 - You'll only have to worry about red, yellow, and green blocks here, and thankfully, they are chained together in an easy-to-combo way. There are lots of brown blocks too, but keep drilling those combos, and you'll get an easy ride through the layer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 8 - There's lots of blue, green, and yellow combos on this layer. In fact, except for color differences, this layer is pretty much a continuation of the seventh layer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 9 - Switching between the two left-most columns is the key to this layer. About halfway through, you'll reach a huge pile of brown blocks, but stay to the right, and some brown blocks from above will fall, and break them down. Simply continue towards the bottom, from there. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 10 - This layer, is cake. There's not many combos, and there's a large amount of brown blocks, but if you stay to the mid-left, you'll easily be able to pass through gaps in the brown blocks, all the way to the bottom. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |---------------------| | Egypt - 1500 Meters | |---------------------| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 1 - Stay in the middle of this area, on this layer, and drill as far down as you can. Whenever you have to, move to the right one space, then get in the middle again when you can. It is very stable there. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 2 - Start on the far-right and drill for about 20 meters. Then, head to the center and mid-left. There's not alot of safe spots, so you'll have to keep moving. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 3 - This layer is all yellow and green. Drill right on down, no problem. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 4 - Switching between the two far-right columns will be a good strategy for the first 40 or 50 meters of this layer, but after that. You'll meet a large group of brown blocks. Move either to the left or center and keep moving. The second have of this layer has few stable areas. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 5 - There's few safe spots, and lots of brown blocks, so you'll be constantly on the move, while digging. There's lots of air capsules too though, and sometimes, to make things easier, you may want to just drill through a brown block. Don't be too reckless though, it easts air quickly, and you should only do it if you can easily reach an air capsule that's closeby. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 6 - This layer is extremely unstable. You'll have to be on all different columns to survive. Just make sure to avoid the brown blocks below, if you can, you don't want to get trapped. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 7 - This is another one of your average areas. No area's completely safe, but the middle is a good place to be, when possible. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 8 - Blue and yellow blocks are everywhere here. You'll be able to slide through easily, assuming you attempt to stya anywhere except the middle column. That's easily the most dangerous area. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 9 - The mid-right area of this layer is extremely stable. Switching between the three or so columns, will allow you to reach the bottom with minimal trouble, assuming you don't stop. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 10 - There's only blue, yellow. and green blocks here, but despite that, there are few large combos. There are however, many air capsules. Stay on the mid-right and drill all the way. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 11 - This is just another one of _those_ layers. The whole thing is unstable, there are little-to-no safe spots, and the whole thing is dangerous. Keep moving, and use your best judgement. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 12 - You can easily switch between the three most-left columbs for the first half of this layer, but after that, things start to get messy. You can keep going, but it may be a better idea to get to the middle. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 13 - Another breeze of a layer. All blue and yellow; Make it work. And do remember to pick up some of the many air capsules. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 14 - The middle is probably the most stable part of this layer, but it does have some tricky parts, reguardless. This is yet another layer where fast, is good. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 15 - Despite having more combos available, this layer is similair to the 14th layer. Try to stay in the middle as often as possible, and don't stop to look back. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |-----------------------| | America - 2000 Meters | |-----------------------| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 1 - This is a basic area, but the middle is surprisingly easy to drill down through. Take make things even better, there's lots of air capsules near the middle as well! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 2 - What is even stranger, is that this layer's middle is also sturdy, with various air capsules available. Just keep going down. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 3 - This is another layer without any litle qwirks. It's similair to the first two layerds, although this time, it would be wiser to stay to the mid, or far right. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 4 - This level seems similair in structure to the first three, so you can start by drilling down on the right, for about fifty meters. Then, however, things get cramped. Head over to the center, or mid-right at that point. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 5 - This is the first layer in the stage, that is actually set up to have some combos open for you. Nothing major, but they do help. Stick to the mid-right or center on this layer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 6 - This layer is similair to the 5th, but the combos are a bit larger. Once again, stick to the mid-right, or center. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 7 - Finally, an easy-going level. There's all blue and yellow bricks here, and by now, you know that layers like this are great. Blow through the layer, and pick up any air capsules you can. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 8 - Once again, it is back to the "average" levels. The middle is the most stable part of this level. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 9 - You should easily be able to get in 70 meters, by drilling between the two left-most columns. When you reach that depth, however, it's best to head to the mid-right before you get hurt. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 10 - There's only several colors on this layer - Blue, Yellow and Green. You should be able to fly right through it without much thought, especially if you stay on the left side of the screen. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 11 - This layer looks average, although it really is quite unstable, as you'll figure out as soon as you start drilling. It doesn't really matter where you start drilling, but no, that you have to be fast, and you have to be careful, reguardless of where you choose. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 12 - This is another extremely unstable layer, in fact it's probably one of the most unstable layers so far. The middle column has the least amount of brown blocks though, so you should probably stick near it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 13 - Although this layer is unstable, it's a welcome change to the avalanche that was the 12th layer. You should be able to make it on the left for 70 meters or so, but after that, head to the right. You will get stuck inside some brown blocks if you stay on the left. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 14 - Here, is another of the rare, easy layers. Only purple and blue blocks here, and you should be able to flow right through. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 15 - This is more-or-less a normal layer, but it does have some tricky parts. Start out on the right, but make sure to clear both of the columns over there. By doing this, you'll cause some brown blocks to collide, and keep you from getting stuck. After that, it's just basic maneuvering until you reach the bottom. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 16 - There are two words that come to mind, at this layer: Unstable, and cramped. Thankfully, it's not as bad as layer 11 was. Try to stay in the mid-right for the best results. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 17 - This layer, though unstable, has many oppurtunities for you to make combos. Once again, the mid-right is the safest area. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 18 - This is another drill-and-run layer. You'll have very little time to think, and there's not a stable area in the layer. Keep moving, and don't take a break mid-layer. Nothing new here. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 19 - This is another average layer. There's some combos here and there, but nothing big. You will have to watch out for the brown blocks though. There's quite a bit of them; Much more than other layers. Be careful, and keep drilling. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Layer 20 - This layer seems to be built to not allow for any decent combos. However, you can rest happy, knowing that it's the final level, and beating it will bring great pride and a feeling of accomplishment... Well, maybe. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |-------------------------------| | Outer Space - Infinite Meters | |-------------------------------| You'll unlock this stage, after you clear all other stages. In this one, there is no end; You drill until you run out of lives. You won't unlock anything by it, either. All the layers are randomly generated as well. Basically, you can look at it as a free-style level, with no goal. __ __ __ __ | | | |------------------------------------------| | (PRESS) | | | |- : - : -| | 6. Pressure Driller | |- : - : -| | |__| |__|------------------------------------------|__| |__| In this mode, you'll be digging, while a giant drill machine is coming down behind you. You can die as many times as you like, but as you know that will slow you down a bit, and since you are trying not to touch the giant drill -- which will give you a game over -- that's a bad thing. Each level is seperated by the number of tons the machine has; You can think of the number of tons as the number of HP if you like. The main goal, is to defeat the machine. You can do this by shooting fireballs at it. Next to your air meter, you'll find a power meter, showing how much power you build up. You start with it empty, not being able to fire at all, but with each orange pill you get -- scattered through the level randomly -- You'll increase your power by 25 percent. Don't think just shooting the drill will save you though, you have to hit it's flowers. You see, every once in a while, as it drills, it's drill will open and replace a flower. It has three drills -- One on each arm, and one on it's body -- And all of them are fair game for you to hit. As for methods on doing this, you have several different choices. |-----------| Using this method, you'll being drilling as fast as you can, | DEFENSIVE | making sure ot pick up the air capsules. Don't worry about |-----------| the power capsules, and only get them when they are convenient for you. Put the focus on escaping the drill. And whenever you get a chance, launch the fireballs at the flower.Only do so if the flower is above you though -- Don't take a chance by moving recklessly to reach it, before it is replaced by a drill again. |------------------| Using this method, you will of course want to move | OFFENSIVE SINGLE | fast and get air capsules, but you'll also want to |------------------| put a priority on picking up power capsules. Don't go to the sides of the screen though, stay near the center. When the large center flower appears, nail it, but don't go for the other flowers at all. |------------------| This method is similair to the Offensive Single | OFFENSIVE TRIPLE | method, although, in this method, the entire screen is |------------------| fair game. And whenever a flower appears, reguardless of its position, get under it and fire. The main idea here, is to do damage as fast as you can. __ __ __ __ | | | |------------------------------------------| | (TIMEA) | | | |- : - : -| | 7. Time Attack Driller | |- : - : -| | |__| |__|------------------------------------------|__| |__| In this mode, you are on fixed courses, that are set up to have puzzle elements. You'll see many gameplay elements that aren't seen anywhere else in the game -- Such as flip boxes. The idea, is to finish the levels as fast as possible. They all have strict time limits, that will take practice to break, but the following strategies should prove to be successful with a little bit of effort. |--------------------| | A - Amazon - 17"00 | |--------------------| This level is pretty straight-forward, as there are almost no puzzles or hard tasks involved in it. Just drill down, and pick up all the timers you find -- They will turn the clock back a couple of seconds. There's one collection of 4 in a row, which is essential to get. If you get them all, the level is cake. Just drill to the bottom. |--------------------| | B - Brazil - 18"00 | |--------------------| This is probably the single easiest Time Attack level in the game. It is similair to Amazon, although all of the timers are connected through combos of blocks -- And the combos go right through the level, to the bottom. Just drill along the combos, and you should easily beat the level with a record time. |-------------------| | C - China - 48:00 | |-------------------| This level introduces the flip switch, and the star blocks, and it can be quite challenging. Takei t in strides, though. Drill down at the start, until you reach a flip switch and a star block. Hit the switch first, then immediately hit the star block, to flip around the platform. Drill through the star block, then proceed to the red switch below. As soon as you hit the red one, hit the yellow one, to flip another platform. Then, drill into another star block to make three paths of stars appear. Take the middle one, to reach an area below, then break another star block. Wait for all the brown blocks around you to break apart, then drill into another star block below. Two paths of stars will appear. Take the one on the left, then immediately run to the right, to the area below. Hit the switch on the left first, then run to the right, so that the switch on the right lands above you. From there, drill down, into a 2-second timer, then down into the ground. |---------------------| | D - Denmark - 18"00 | |---------------------| This level is kind of like a mix between Amazon and Brazil. There are many combos between clocks thatlead to the bottom, but there are many single blocks as well. You can easily follow from timer-to-timer, but the time limit is indeed strict. So, you have to pick them all up, without fail. |-------------------| | E - Egypt - 25"00 | |-------------------| This is a very interesting level, that can look quite intimidating at first. The seperate areas are divided by lines of solid brown blocks, with huge chunks between them -- And all the chnks, have timers in them. The idea, is to quickly drill down on the side of the chunks, then dig along the bottom of the chunks, so that they fall and hit the barrier, breaking it, and dropping the timers. Pick up all the timers, then head down to the next area to do it again. |--------------------| | F - France - 24"00 | |--------------------| This level, is made up of several areas, with mountains of brown blocks. It kind of looks like a maze, but in reality, as long as you take a left at the first turn, you should be fine. Both sides are balanced pretty fairly; If one side has lots of combos, the other has more timers, and vice-verca. You may not set a huge record, but it doesn't take much at all to beat the 24 second mark. |---------------------| | G - Germany - 30"00 | |---------------------| This level is extremely easy, as it requires almost no strategy, and contains no puzzles at all! Basically, you are in an avalanche situation; Blocks are falling all around you. Just dig down through, and assuming you don't get crushed in the process, you'll beat the 30-second limit. Playing this level really causes you to asks yourself, if the 30 was a typo of some sort. |-----------------------| | H - Hong Kong - 25"00 | |-----------------------| This stage isn't too tricky, but the time limit is cut a bit close. You can make your way through, drilling any way you like, but it's almost required, that you nail every timer along, by causing the brown blocks around them to fall, and smash. It sounds simple in words, but it will most likely require some practice. |-------------------| | I - Italy - 18"00 | |-------------------| This level can be confusing at first, but once you know what to do, it is really easy, and fun. The way it works, is that there are alcoves of brown blocks, casing timers throughout the whole level -- Which is actually two layers, scaling in at 200 meters. What you have to do, is get the timer, then wait for the alcove to drop, as if it were an elevator. Move from alcove to alcove after they fall, until you can see the 200 meter mark below you. At this time, just drill for it. |---------------------| | J - Japan - 1'51"00 | |---------------------| This stage, is hard; No question about it. It can, like all stages, be beaten though. Start by drilling your way into the inside of the mountain of brown blocks, then running to the left side of it, before the crystal blocks explode, and it begins collapsing. When you reach the side, dig as fast as you can to reach the bottom. Drill along the path, until you reach an open area, then begin digging downward, freeing the timers from the cases of brown blocks, until you reach the 100 meter barrier. That ends the first part of the level. The second half, which goes on for about 50 meters, is an avalanche setting -- Just keep yourself alive, and keep drilling. You will then come to an all blue/yellow area, with some timers in it. Just fly through that, picking up all the timers, until you reach the 200 meter mark. You're almost there. The next few timers are all connected through combos, so follow them, until you reach another mountain of brown blocks. Inside there are some elevators. Ride them down -- But make sure not to miss any, or you'll be stuck, and have to restart. After that, there's a few switch areas. Hit the switches, and soon, you'll reach the bottom, clearing this hellish level! Now, you have access to Reverse Modes of these same levels. __ __ __ __ | | | |------------------------------------------| | (ITEMS) | | | |- : - : -| | 8.
