Miscellaneous X. Frequently-Asked Questions XI. Acknowledgements, and The End ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Version History: 0.1--5/31/01: FAQ started. 1.0--6/12/01: FAQ completed and hopefully released. 2.0--6/15/01: Corrected information in Illustration and Miscellaneous sections; added information on how to fight Kyo and Iori in 1P modes 2.1--3/20/02: Minor update. Finally changed incorrect "Survival Mode" to correct "Single All!" Break out the champagne! (Unless you're under 21.) 2.5--12/5/02: Removed "Infinite Time" trick on the grounds that it doesn't work; added a couple of new tricks; added how to get the regular Team endings 2.6--9/19/03: Simplified copyright notice, changed e-mail address 2.7--4/21/04: Corrected some incorrect info in the Illustration section (BTW, this FAQ is now almost three years old... who'da thunk it?) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- II. Comments: It's been noted that each year, SNK's KOF conversions get better and better. Now, nothing's ever going to outdo those ports to the venerable old Neo-Geo, or to the Sega Saturn for that matter (can you say, 4-Meg Ram cart equals near-perfection? I knew that you could), but SNK's Playstation conversions managed to improve every year (thankfully, since they started out being rather poor). SNK, now owned by Playmore, has opted to port its future games to the Playstation 2 (and are releasing one of the last Dreamcast games in Japan, a port of KOF 2001), thus ending a small piece of gaming history. In 2001 KOF '99 arrived on the PSOne (at least in America--we're always a bit behind the ball)--the last KOF to be given such a port--and, surprisingly, it's near-perfect. The control is a little loose, and the graphics suffer from the wonky color palette and low resolution (everything looks a little soft around the edges), but nearly all of the animation is intact and the sound is great (apart from the hissy voices, which were probably taped off an arcade board with an old Walkman from the sound of it). Of course, using a PSOne or PS2 solves most of the resolution problems, giving you a brighter, sharper picture that is much more pleasant to the eyes. Loading times are on a par with Capcom's Street Fighter Alpha 3; not as fast as one would like, but much better than even the Saturn port of KOF '97. Fortunately for those of us sick of having to import anything with an SNK logo on it, Agetec released a bargain-priced port in the States (a KOF going new for $9.99 US must be one of the greatest gaming bargains in history). It's now frequently found used or on clearance for much less (my new copy cost me $4.88), and if you haven't picked this one up yet, I suggest you do so. I purchased a new copy on Halloween 20002 (after trading it in several months ago; I ended up missing it terribly) and decided it was time to give this old FAQ one last rev, partly because there were a few new tricks out there, partly because one of the old ones simply does not work (I'm embarrassed that I hadn't yet delete it), partly because I'm sick and tired of being asked "How do I get such-and-such a team's ending?", but, most of all, because I am bored. Enjoy, all you happy taxpayers. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- III. Before We Begin (Begin The Beguine, that is) First of all: This is not a movelist. There are many good movelists for various versions of KOF '99, and you can rest assured that all of these moves are present and accounted for in the PSOne version. A PSOne movelist would be pointless and a bit on the pirate-y side. All you have to do is remember this simple key: Light punch--X Heavy punch--Square Light kick--Circle Heavy kick--Triangle This will let you mentally translate the commands in any standard movelist for your controller. And you can edit any of the settings if they aren't to your liking. Second: Here's some more obvious advice. Use the Simple control option. This will give your shoulder buttons an actual function. You'll be able to use them to do both dodges, summon your Striker, and do a hard attack without having to mash buttons. Purists may prefer to continue mashing buttons, but if you've got eight buttons on your controller, why ignore four of them? If you're not comfortable with the standard setup, use the Simple setup. (The Special option is, however, not recommended, as it sucks most of the challenge out of the game by giving you the ability to do one-button special moves.) Third: When you complete a game, SAVE. This will allow you to restart at Stage 6 (or an earlier stage if you opted not to continue after losing a match). This makes getting all the endings and illustrations much easier. Contributions: I'm no longer accepting contributions to this FAQ; there just isn't that much to add now. I still do read my mail and answer it when I feel like it. I am also no longer acting as a free KOF '99 Help Desk. Why? Nearly every single question I've gotten has been concerned with things already answered in the FAQ. This FAQ can be gotten, for free, from two websites authorized to carry it. There's no reason for me to spend time I don't have explaining the same thing over and over again. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- IV. Getting Krizalid First of all: Credit where credit is due. Although this FAQ is my own work, this button code comes straight from GameFAQ's code page for KOF '99 and was submitted by Okong. To enable Krizalid: Beat the game in Team Play mode on any difficulty and using any number of continues (you just have to beat both forms of Krizalid on Stage 6). Next, enter either of the versus modes and hold Start. Keep holding Start as you move the cursor down to the Roulette box, then (did I mention you have to keep holding Start?) enter the following code: Circle, X, Triangle, Square. The code has to be entered fairly quickly. If it worked, Krizalid will appear directly underneath the Roulette box, between Kyo-1 and Kyo-2. OrochiK confirms that saving your game at the options screen won't work; you've just got to complete the game (on any difficulty) and save the game at the prompt once the credits have rolled. Anyway, once your game is well and properly saved, Krizalid will be permanently available in both Vs. modes and in practice mode, but not in any other one-player mode. Oh, well. (Hey, he's available in the Dreamcast version. What gives? Of course, he doesn't really have his own ending, but just gets the edit team ending, which is sort of an ending, but never mind.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- V. Art Gallery For the most part, Art Gallery is devoid of secrets. It has lots of neat things in it, of course. Unused Athena sprites, character designs, scary pictures of deformed people with really big heads (um, actually those are kind of creepy)--you name it, it's in here. However, there are 12 secret Illustrations that you can earn by beating Krizalid with a specific edit team. Sophia had them up first on the GameFAQs Message Board for this game and deserves full credit for being first. (I'd like to apologize for my previous credit to her, BTW. I was trying to be funny but it seemed whiny and rude when I finally looked at the FAQ again last month. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.) My own method was to choose random edit teams and load up my Stage 6 save, beat Krizalid, and see what resulted. Not the most efficient way to discover all this junk, but it did work (it also took two weeks, which is why I was a little put out when I found out someone got there first). Well, anyway, for those who haven't found them yet, here they are. Keep in mind that you don't actually have to beat Team Play mode to unlock these pictures, only Stage 6. You can load your Stage 6 save, fight Kriz, and skip all the demo sequences, and the illustration will still be unlocked, as long as you save again. The Old & New KOF Team: Shingo, Iori, Kyo, K' The Kids Team: Kensou, Xiangfei, Shingo, Bao The Short Cut Team (wins an award for worst pun in the game): Blue Mary, King, Whip, Athena The Whip & Disciples Team: Iori, Benimaru, Whip, Kyo The Masters Team: Kim, Takuma, Jhun, Chin The Bellybutton Flashers Team: Leona, Athena, Benimaru, Blue Mary The Kamikaze Killers Team: Ralf, Bao, Chang, Maxima (earlier versions of this FAQ included K'; however, Marcus e-mailed me to tell me that including K' on your team will NOT unlock this illustration) The Hatters Team (second worst pun in the game): Choi, Clark, Terry, Bao (no prizes for guessing that one) The 3 Lords Team: Shingo, Kyo-1, Kyo-2, Kyo The Awesome Hairstyle Team: Chang, Andy, Benimaru, Jhun The Fatal Fury All-Stars Team: Choose any 4 of the following characters; however, you will not get this illustration with the Fatal Fury (New South Town) Team, only with an edit team. So, for example, you could make an edit team of Terry, Andy, Joe, and Kim, and you'd still get the illustration, as long as at least one member of the team is missing. Terry, Blue Mary, Andy, Xiangfei, Kim, Mai, Joe The Art Of Fighting All-Stars Team: Choose any 4 of the following; however, just as with the Fatal Fury team, you will not get the illustration with the default Art Of Fighting team. At least one member needs to be missing, so, for example, you could use a team of Ryo, Robert, Yuri, and King, and get the illustration. King, Yuri, Kasumi, Ryo, Robert, Takuma ----------------------------------------------------------------------- VI. Demo Gallery I've finally added all of the team rosters to this section, in an effort to keep newbies and other foolish people from e-mailing me every month and asking, "How do I get the Team endings?" Well, I give up, kids. You win. I'm going to include the info after all. However, this also means that any mail on this subject gets deleted instantly (it was already, but never mind). Heroes Team--K', Maxima, Benimaru, Shingo. Demo 8 will unlock no matter what you do, but if you fulfill the conditions to fight against Kyo, you'll see Demo 8 during the game. Fatal Fury Team--Terry, Andy, Joe, Mai. You can only see Demo 8 if you manage to defeat Krizalid with Mai. Beating him with Terry, Andy, or Joe will result in the standard ending, Demo 7. Demo 8 will NOT unlock if you don't meet those conditions. Art Of Fighting Team--Ryo, Robert, Yuri, Takuma. Ikari Team--Leona, Ralf, Clark, Whip. Psycho Soldier Team--Athena, Kensou, Chin, Bao. You can only see Demo 8 if you defeat Krizalid with Kensou; beating him with Athena, Chin, or Bao will give you Demo 7. Demo 8 will NOT unlock if you do not meet those conditions. Woman Fighters Team--King, Blue Mary, Kasumi, Xiangfei. Korea Team--Kim, Chang, Choi, Jhun. Kyo Edit Team--This can be any edit team featuring Kyo; however, Iori Yagami cannot be on the team, or you will get the ordinary edit team ending. Iori Edit Team--Just like Kyo's ending, Iori cannot share his team with his hated rival, or you'll get the standard edit team ending. Edit Team 1--You will get this the first time you beat Krizalid with an edit team, as long as it does not feature either Kyo or Iori (you can use the Kyo-1 or Kyo-2 clones if you wish), unless they're both on the team. If you want to challenge yourself, you may use a Roulette team. Edit Team 2--Just like Edit Team 1, only now the last demo is in color. Whee! You'll automatically get this the second time you beat Krizalid with an edit team (see above for team conditions). If you get this ending first, which is possible, the above demos will also be unlocked. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- VII. Voice Gallery This isn't really a secret per se, but you'd have to randomly scroll through the characters to find these. This is a list of all the "special" voices you can listen to in this Gallery. Note that, in a game, nearly all of these match-ups between characters will result in some sort of special animation before the match starts; however, some special animations do not feature any voice work, and so you won't find the match-ups here (I may do a separate list sometime, if there's any demand for it, and include it in this FAQ). Also, match-ups work both ways, so, for example, you can select Krizalid, then K', and hear the same sample. Any of these match-ups can be reversed; they were arrived at by basically starting with K' and going through the entire list. Character VS. Character K' Krizalid--second form only Maxima Krizalid--both forms Benimaru Kyo Shingo Kasumi " Kyo Terry Andy " Joe " Blue Mary " Xiangfei Andy Mai " Xiangfei Joe Xiangfei Mai Bao " Xiangfei Ryo Robert " Yuri " Takuma " King " Kasumi Robert Kasumi Yuri Kasumi Takuma Kasumi Leona Whip " Bao Ralf Clark Whip Bao " Krizalid--second form only Athena Kensou " Bao Kensou Bao " Xiangfei Chin Bao Bao King " Blue Mary " Kasumi Kim Chang " Jhun Chang Choi Choi Jhun Kyo Iori (The characters who interact the most with others seem to be, hands down, Bao and Li Xiangfei.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- VIII. Color Edit Not really a secret at all, but Krizalid *can* be color-edited, if you so desire. You can edit the palettes of up to 10 characters, save your palettes to your memory card, and, once loaded, the characters will appear with your palette in the other game modes. Nice if you really hate the colors of somebody's costume or always wanted to get into fashion design; otherwise, this is a fairly pointless extra. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- IX. Miscellaneous The dumping ground for all secrets that have no place elsewhere--call it the "Island Of Misfit Secrets," I guess. --Fight Kyo According to OrochiK, who once found the info on SNK's homepage: You must beat the game with more than 250 points. (Thus, if you use the Heroes team, if you meet the condition you'll fight Kyo after Krizalid on a bonus Stage 7 and get to see the extra cutscene, Demo 8.) --Fight Iori The conditions for fighting Iori are a little different than those for Kyo. You must have less than 250 points to fight Iori. Considering that I used several continues against Krizalid, you must also probably either not use a continue or have at least 200 points to fight Iori. (Thanks to OrochiK for also supplying this information.) --Handicaps in 1P modes If you lose a match, after you continue, you can pick from four choices- -reduce your opponent to 1/3rd health, etc. The handicap is over when the round ends. --Pick A Win Pose Holding down a button after defeating an opponent allows you to choose which win pose you want to see. Submitted to GameFAQs by Orochi K. Tested by me. --Reveal your characters' order before the match Normally, after selecting your team order (including the striker) for the match, the game will only show them in silhouette. Holding the start button while choosing the order will show their character portraits instead. Submitted to GameFAQs by Orochi K. Tested by me. (I'm not letting any more fake tricks get in here. It was embarrassing enough the first time.) --Unlock Everything The Easy Way Yes, it's true, you can unlock everything while still only technically beating Team Mode twice. Do the following: 1) Pick a team and beat Team Play mode. 2) Save at the prompt. 3) Use the Krizalid trick (see section IV). 4) Play all the way through Team Play mode again, and save at the prompt. 5) Load up a save game, and take through all of the regular teams and Illustration Edit teams to earn all of the Demos and Illustrations. Remember to get both endings for the Fatal Fury and Psycho Soldier teams. This only takes a couple of hours, rather than several long hours, and is the next best thing to being a lazy bum and downloading a save. I have nothing against that, but I like to unlock everything myself. Call it a quirk. Call it anything you want, actually; I'm sure it won't mind. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- X. Frequently Asked Questions Not much here yet, because I haven't yet heard many questions become frequently asked, an exalted status that means "they have become roughly as annoying as the ancient '60s novelty song, 'Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Polka Dot Bikini.'" Once a question enters this status, it will be posted here, so I don't have to keep answering it. Q): Who are Seth and Vanessa and why are they on the back and inside of the tray card? (overheard in game stores, on message boards, etc., and in my in-box at least twice a month) A): Seth and Vanessa are characters from KOF 2000 who were added (as "Extra Strikers") to the Dreamcast port of '99, KOF Evolution. Agetec also released the Dreamcast version in the US, and, presumably to save money, they have used the same back cover design for the PSOne version, a very poor decision. They are NOT in this version of KOF '99! Q) Why are Goro Daimon, Chizuru Kagura, Billy Kane, and Ryuji Yamazaki pictured near the end of the manual? (usually part 2 of above question) A) For the same reason that Seth and Vanessa appear on the back cover. All of the above characters are Extra Strikers in KOF Evolution. Once again (with feeling!): They are NOT in this version of KOF '99! Q) How do I get Syo and Gai? A) Syo and Gai are hidden (very well hidden, I might add) Extra Strikers in KOF Evolution. They are not in this game. Q) How do I get Krizalid? A) Beat Team Play mode once, go into a versus mode, hold Start and keep holding it until the trick is done, then highlight the Roulette box and quickly hit Circle, X, Triangle, and Square. (In the Japanese version, hold Select rather than Start.) You must then beat the game again to permanently add Krizalid to your saved game. See Section IV for more details. Q) Can I use Krizalid in any 1P modes? A) No. There is a GameShark code floating around out there which will allow you to use Krizalid in the 1P modes, but there is no legitimate way to use Krizalid in a 1P mode in this version of KOF '99. Using Krizalid in Team Play mode will always get you the Edit Team 2 ending. Q) Who are these "default" teams you keep talking about? I can't figure out who they are! A) When I first wrote this FAQ, I wrote "This is the question I hate the most," and my estimation hasn't changed. I still hate it. Only now, this information has been added to Section VI (because I was sick of getting it at least once or twice a month). Check Section VI and stop asking me about it, or the Internet Furies will be visited upon thee. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- XI. Acknowledgements Gamefaqs.com and its proprietor/webmaster/overworked guy, CJayC: For being a good source of gaming help over the last couple of years every time I got stuck in a game, and for running said site Cheat Happens and Chris O'Rorke: who wanted to host my FAQs, for some unfathomable reason. Cheers, mate! OrochiK: For supplying several corrections, reminding me of my failure to mention Sophia, and giving me the necessary conditions to fight Kyo and Iori in the 1-player modes. Rick: Rick's the one who told me that "survival mode" was "Single All," after I thought I'd changed it ages ago. Which is also the reason that damn nonworking trick stayed in here (I didn't have the game anymore and had no real way to test it, which should have been done properly when I first wrote this stupid document). Nevertheless, hey, there, Rick. Marcus: Marcus took the time to e-mail me and politely tell me that, no, you can't have K' on your team when you unlock the Kamikaze Killers illustration (something I really should have tested years ago... oh well). Thanks, man. Glad you liked the FAQ. Agetec (www.agetec.com): For releasing this game in the US, after I had been long resigned to importing anything with an SNK logo on it--I forgive you for the dumb packaging errors, and for giving Mark Of The Wolves a proper release in the US (I wasn't happy with Last Blade 2, but that's mostly because I think that game isn't half as good as MOTW, so we'll let that one go). SNK: For making the all-around best 2D fighting game series (other than Vampire/Darkstalkers), King of Fighters. You: For reading this FAQ Eof
