This is my first walkthrough. I made it because I am such a huge fan of Guitar Hero II. I hope you do give this guide a good read because I also need opinions on how informative I need to be. Now thank you, and enjoy! ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## 2: Playing the Game ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## When you buy Guitar Hero II, you can either get it with the guitar, (which is red and black, and it also comes with a strap and stickers too!) or the game itself. The guitar, modeled after the Gibson SG, comes with 5 colourful frets, which are green, red, yellow, blue, and orange. It carries two knobs on the back and front of the guitar, for the strap. It has a little white bar on the face of the guitar, which is used to strum the notes appearing on the board. There is also a whammy bar, which is used for tweaking your notes, and also getting Star Power, later explained in the FAQ. If you do get the game without the guitar, you can still use the Dual Shock 2 controller, but it takes away the fun. You just press the buttons without strumming. The controls for the Dual Shock 2 are as follows: L2: Green Fret L1: Red Fret R1: Yellow Fret R2: Blue Fret X: Orange Fret Left Analog: Whammy Bar Pause: Start Star Power: Select ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## a) Tutorials ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## The first thing you obviously want to do, is learn how to play Guitar Hero II. Luckily, it has a tutorial section in the game. Located in the Training section, go to the Tutorial Mode and a man will teach you how to start rocking. ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## a1) First Tutorial ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## Description: Just the basics you need to begin playing. Info: The basics of playing. Lesson One: Guitar Tuning Task: Play each note 3 times to continue. This one is easy. Just hold each colour on the guitar, and strum up and down to tune your guitar. Lesson Two: Playing Notes Task: Play 6 notes to continue This one is a little harder now. As the colour of the frets go past the line of your frets, hold down the colour of the fret (in this case, green) and strum as the notes hit your fret. Lesson Three: Different Notes Task: Play some different notes, hit 8 to continue This is the same as lesson two, except now there are different fret colours. Do like you did last time, use the colour of the fret on the guitar, hold it down, then strum as the note crosses the line. Lesson Four: Long Notes Task: Play 6 long notes to continue Now, do the same as lessons two and three, but now, when the note comes at you, hold the colour of the fret down (not the strum) until it finishes. You can also feel free to use the whammy bar if you like, but just don't let go of the fret. Lesson Five: Chords Task: Hit 6 chords to continue This is the same as lesson two also, except now you must hold two of the fret colours and strum. It looks hard, but it isn't. Lesson Six: User Interface Task: None This lesson explains the user interface while playing a song in Career or Quick Play. The rock metre is how well you're doing on the song. If it's green, you are doing fine. If it's yellow, you're doing okay. If it's red, the crowd hates you. If it's blinking red, you're gonna fail. The Star Power metre can be seen on top of the rock metre also. On the left, you will see your score. The numbers represent how much points you have. The bottom is the multiplier. The more notes you play, the more points you get. BASIC TUTORIAL COMPLETE! ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## a2) Second Tutorial ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## Description: The secret of Star Power: how to boost it and how to use it. Info: Explanation of the star power. Lesson One: Star Combos Task: Nail the star combo to continue Follow the steps you saw in the first tutorial, and nail the star combo. Remember, hold the fret down of the colour, and strum. Lesson Two: Whammy Bar Task: Boost the Star Power Metre to continue This lesson explains more of the whammy bar. You can tell that pressing it in and out is kind of sick. You can also swivel the whammy bar to however you like it to your preference. But, you can use this baby to get star power. On long notes, hold the fret and use the whammy bar to extract the star power into your metre. You can use it slowly or even rapidly fast. Lesson Three: Tilt for Star Power Task: Tilt for Star Power and hit 8 notes to continue Now, here's the fun part. Once you see your Star Power Metre flashing, you can activate in two ways. You can lift your guitar's neck up as shown in the diagram, or you can do it the boring way - by pressing select. Activate Star Power, and hit the notes. STAR POWER TUTORIAL COMPLETE! ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## a3) Third Tutorial ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## Description: For experts with hours of practice already. Info: Hammer-ons and Pull-offs explained. Lesson One: String Basics Task: None Just a vocal lesson. Just listen. Lesson Two: Hammer-on Fingering Task: Hit 3 hammer-on sequences to continue Here is the hard part of this tutorial. When you strum a fret, (in this case green) don't let go of the fret that you strummed, and tap the next fret. Lesson Three: Hammer-Ons Task: Hit 8 notes using the hammer-on technique. Do the same as lesson two. But, if the note does not have a black outline on the top, the note is hammer-on possible. Strum the note, then hammer-on that non-black note. Lesson Four: Pull-offs Task: Hit 3 pull-off sequences to continue/Hit 8 notes using the pull-off technique. It's basically the same as Hammer-Ons, in reverse. Strum the fret, (in this case yellow) but this time, let go of the fret that you strummed, and tap the next fret. ADVANCED TUTORIAL COMPLETE! ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## 2) Level of Difficulty ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## When you play your first song, you will notice that there are four difficulties. They are Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert. If you are a first-time player, I recommend you to start on Easy. If you think Easy is too easy, try Medium. If you think you're going to do a gig, try hard. If you're ready to rock, do Expert. Each level has a set amount of notes and frets. The Easy level only has 3 frets (Green, Red, Yellow) and little amount of frets. Medium has 4 frets (Green, Red, Yellow, Blue) and more notes than Easy. Hard and Expert both have 5 frets (Green, Red, Yellow, Blue, Orange) and plentiful of notes. ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## 3) Song Practices ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## A new feature implemented in Guitar Hero II, and the best one so far. If you have trouble nailing a section of a song, use this to help you. Pick your song, pick the part you want to play, pick your difficulty, choose the sections of the parts you wanna play, and choose how slow you want it. ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## 3: Career Mode ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## Finally, you get to be a guitarist. You got your drummer, bass and vocals. Now you need a band. Pick a name for your band, choose a character and guitar, and you're all set! ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## a) The Venues ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## As a guitarist, you and your band get to perform songs at different places. But hold on, you're not gonna play at a huge concert yet! As you progress, you will get to go to more places. In order, the venues you go to are the following: 1. Battle of the Bands at Nilbog High School Gym in Midwest, USA 2. The Rat Cellar at Boston, MA 3. The Blackout Bar at Providence, RI 4. The RedOctane Venue at Brooklyn, NY 5. Rock City Theatre at Detroit, MI 6. The Vans Warped Tour at Austin, TX 7. The Harmonix Arena at Oakland, CA 8. Stonehenge Venue at England. In order to unlock the next set of songs, you must play the same set as the venues. ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## b) The Songs ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## On Easy, there is a total of 28 songs you can play. But on Medium, Hard, and Expert, you can play up to 40 songs (not including the bonus songs). The bonus songs are for the "Be a Guitar Hero" contest, and are added to the game for fun. They do not affect your career progress at all, so don't worry. ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## c) The Money ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## After you finish a song, you are awarded with a reward. Yes, it's money. Depending on what level you play, and how much stars you get (3 being the lowest, 5 being the most) you get the amount of money. Now that you have money, we can now go to the store and buy things. ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## d) The Store ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## Here's the place you can use your money on. And when I mean fun, I mean to play with lots of people. Sadly the PS2 version doesn't have the online capabilities of the 360 version, but you can still gather some friends to play together. ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## a) Cooperative Mode ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## Everyone who has Guitar Hero should play this mode with a friend. You and your friend can play together to be part of a 2-man band. One of you can be the rocking Lead Guitarist, and the other can be a Bassist. (or Rhythm on some songs) You and your friend have only one Rock Metre, Star Power bar, and score. You gain points together, do well together, and even use Star Power at the same time. You also get two fretboards, so you and your friend get your own. ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## b) Face-Off Mode ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## In this mode, you play a friend and battle out to see which is the better guitarist. You pick the song, and each person picks their difficulty and guitar, and dukes it out on who's the better guitarist. You each play your own line of notes to see who's better. There is a metre which measures who is performing well (red on the left, blue on the right) and each person gets a Star Power bar. There is also no Rock Metre, so it's impossible to fail a song. ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## c) Pro-Faceoff Mode ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## Before you can play this, you must beat the game on Medium or above. Now, this is the mother of the modes, where it may perform similar to Face-Off, you and your friend must play the same difficulty, by playing the whole note chart. That means each person is playing a one-player mode, except competing against each other. A: No, it only makes a weird sound, and extracts Star Power from long notes. Q: Why is Jordan so impossible on Expert? What is Harmonix/Red Octane thinking?!? Q: What's the difference between normal notes and HO/PO notes? A: You can tell visually by looking at the note. If the note has a black border on the top of a note, it is a regular note. But if it has a white border, it is possible to HO/PO it. ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## 8: Conclusion ##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=##=## This is the end of the guide.
