I always thought the little comic book style was a neat addition to the cinematics. Anyways, it won't take long before you are thrust into battle. Get ready! --- Citadel of Acre --- Dante's all by his lonesome as an army of civilians storm the dock. It's clear that they aren't very skilled at fighting since groups often crowd around you like brain-dead peasants while one or two may take a swipe at you with their aged and rusty weapons. I never played the game once before, and on my first attempt I managed to unlock the achievement for getting a 200-hit combo. That alone is a testament to how little trouble you should have here. Continue defeating civilians using the basic commands the game teaches you. Use the X and Y buttons for a light and heavy attack respectively. That's really all you need to know for now; the only hazards aside from the civilians themselves are the occasional fireball that flies onto the dock. Once the last numbskull is defeated, a flaming boat will crash into the north end of the area. Jump onto the bow (double jump by tapping A twice), then hop up onto the ledge. Move forward for a scene. Dante manages to fall victim to a sneak attack, and like any dying individual, he is greeted by Death. However, Dante isn't ready for Death to order him around. .============================================================================. | BOSS: Death | '============================================================================' You will need to know some advanced techniques if you want to survive against Death (that's a weird statement...). In order to block, use the Left Trigger. Dante can also dodge by moving the Right Analog Stick, which is quicker than blocking and allows you to retaliate faster than if you were to block a move head-on. Death doesn't have many attacks that you need to worry about evading. His most basic move is a three-hit combo with his scythe, so remember to block for all three hits. He also have a wide-range attack as well, often preceded by him teleporting away from you. This move has an incredibly wide radius, so you're better off blocking than trying to dodge it. Death may attempt this attack two times in a row. If Death tosses his scythe at Dante, block and continue to hold down the Left Trigger. It acts as a boomerang, so ready yourself as it comes back through you to reach its owner. His other long-range attack is a fireball attack that can deal some damage if hit square in the face. Finally, Death can use an unblockable attack to reel Dante in. If this happens, repeatedly press B to free yourself from the boss's grasp. The first half of the boss fight is a cake walk. You are never far away from Death for long because he often teleports right next to you, so you don't have to worry about not getting enough shots in. Block any attack he throws your way, then use light attacks to counter. Once Death's down to about half health, he will begin to float in the air. You can still attack while on the ground, but you may want to try aerial attacks instead (you can still block while in midair). The battle is pretty much the exact same as before but I guess jumping around can get annoying and may leave you more vulnerable than before. Once Death is down to a sliver of life left, he will fall to the ground and a button icon appears over him. Press it to steal his scythe, then use it on the boss. A second button icon appears: follow the button prompt to kill Death (heh, another weird statement) and end the fight. ============================================================================== Dante receives a wad of white Souls from the boss fight; Souls act as the game's currency as you can use them to purchase new abilities. A cutscene follows. --- Florence, Italy --- Dante discovers Beatrice's dead body in the cemetery, and her soul is dragged off to hell. Before Dante can give pursuit, the cemetery gets sealed off and Undead Minions rise from the earth. Dante has some new abilities since jacking Death's scythe, so check 'em out by pressing Start and test some of them out. You'll likely earn enough White Souls to purchase an upgrade as well, though I suggest waiting until you get 1,500 to pick up Repayment. The fire wall lowers, and you will be able to follow the trail ahead. Save your game at the Beatrice Statue at the entrance of the building and replenish your health using the Green Fountain. Open the door and walk towards Beatrice's body for yet another scene. The building wall collapses, revealing a fiery inferno below. In order to slay the flying Pests, use your new Holy Cross ability by pressing B. You have unlimited "ammo", so spam this new move all you'd like on the Pests. Just make sure not to fall off the edge! After killing a few Pests, the game teaches you about punishing and absolving enemies. If you noticed on the upgrade section of the menu, you have both Unholy and Holy abilities. In order to be given access to new abilities, you must level up. If you look at the abilities list, you can not purchase abilities that are on a right row than your level. Since you are at Level 0 right now, you can only purchase abilities on the row "0". Naturally, you can gain levels by earning experience. You can earn experience by punishing and/or absolving enemies. Press the Right Trigger to grab an enemy, and you'll be given the option to punish or absolve them. Punishing them (X), earns you Unholy experience, while absolving them (B) nets you Holy experience. You're basically given the option of good vs. evil, and I'm not going to steer you in any direction, so whichever path you take is totally up to you. Kill the remaining Undead Minions and Pests. A wooden cross falls from the wall, giving you an exit outta here. Use the Green Fountain in the alcove, then press the Right Bumper next to the yellow orb to grab onto the pole below. Shimmy down the pole to the basement. A giant wooden wheel will begin rolling to the right as you proceed down a narrow hallway. You must defeat every last enemy to open the gate at the end, or else the wheel will catch up to you and you'll be crushed. Don't worry about punishing or absolving the Undead Minions as that wastes precious time. Simply hack and slash your way to the other side until the enemies stop coming and the gate drops. Slip through and destroy the White Fountain to obtain some White Souls. Drop down below and a flaming cross will block your path. Fire Minions emerge from the flames to attack. In order to defeat these monsters, you must stun them with your Holy Cross before attacking. Once you've killed the last one, continue along the path to another White Fountain. More Undead Minions arrive, and you must combat against them while avoiding the nasty flame jets positioned on the wall. Stand near the Green Fountain and do battle so that if your health runs low you can immediately refill it. Once the coast is clear, save your game up ahead and shimmy down the pole. Walk towards the ghastly figure to learn your first magic spell: Righteous Path. Equip it in the magic section of the pause menu. The game points out Purple Fountains, which restore mana (mana is consumed when you use magic). Test out your new magic on the Undead Minions and Pests until a bigger problem arises. A much bigger problem. The large Asterian Beast is controlled by the Beast Tamer riding on its head, but despite the intimidating nature of the monster, you should actually topple him and defeat its master quite easily. He only uses two attacks: a fist slam which is pitifully slow and a stomp attack using his stubby feet. Always stay behind the Asterian Beast and attack his feet; when he raises one foot in the air, dodge away to avoid getting squashed. You can end the battle much faster if your Redemption Meter is filled (the bar on the bottom-left corner). If it's filled and glowing, press the Right and Left Bumpers simultaneously to enter Redemption Mode. While in this mode, Dante's attacks are much stronger and he moves quicker as well. Once the Asterian Beast falls and the Right Trigger appears, you can press it and follow the button commands to kill the Beast Tamer. Before you do so, make sure to destroy all the fountains present if you have not already. You can use the beast's slam attack by pressing X and stomp with Y. Also, you can grab enemies with the Right Trigger and even breathe fire with B! Kill the unlucky souls that patrol the ground below, then open the large door when prompted. Save your game here and follow the yellow marker to grab onto the Wall of the Damned. It's essentially a wall made entirely of dead people/lost souls. It's a little freaky. Climb to the left and slide down, then make a pit stop on the ledge down here to find a White Fountain. Resume climbing to the left. Press A to jump across the gap to the other side of the wall. Talk to the pale blue spirit, who by the way is the spirit of Virgil. Speak with him a second time to receive the DEATH BLADE relic. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 01 | | After talking with Virgil and receiving the relic, jump up onto the alcove | behind him to find another fountain. This is a Silver Fountain, and breaking | it will yield a Silver Judas Coin. Collect these rare coins to earn Souls! | Drop down from the ledge and go forward to catch a glimpse of Charon, the ferryman who carries the souls of the undead across the river Styx. Well in this case, it looks like Charon is the ferry itself rather than the ferryman! --- Shores of Acheron --- Break the Purple Fountain and pull the lever to raise the bridge ahead. A few Pests and Undead Minions spawn here as the bridge lowers. Defeat the Undead Minions here and the Pests; pull the lever again and cross the bridge before it retracts to its normal position. Use the White Fountain and slide down the pole. A Guardian Demon waits for you as something in the center of the room descends into the floor. The Guardian Demon is big, but not that tough. His dagger attacks are weak, but when it glows red, dodge out of the way because it is unblockable. Once you deal enough damage, you will be able to grab the foe and punish/absolve it. Another Guardian Demon appears alongside some Hell Minions (these are just like the Undead Minions you've been fighting). Defeat the enemies for a lever to reappear from the floor. Grab it with the Right Bumper and move the Left Analog Stick to the right to move the floor up towards the glistening gate. Once you're high enough, jump towards the glowing gate and strike it to break it, revealing a door. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 02 | | Before entering the door, return to the lever (the floor lowers when you are | away from the lever) and continue raising the floor up, past the door. At | the very top is an alcove with a Silver Fountain on the left. Step away from | the lever and quickly double jump to the fountain and break it for the coin. | Drop down and raise the floor back up to the door, then go through. There are two hidden White Fountains to the left and right of the door, so don't miss them. Speak with Virgil until he disappears, then refill your health at the Green Fountain. Make sure to destroy the crates and other objects lining the path to receive some White Souls. Eventually you are sealed off as Hell Minions, Pests, and Guardian Demons appear. Defeat the enemies and head towards the door to find your first Damned Soul: PONTIUS PILATE. You'll find lost souls like him wandering throughout hell, and you will be given the choice to punish or absolve them just like enemies. Punishing requires nothing, but in order to absolve a lost soul you must partake in a lil' minigame. Here's how it goes: | | A cross-shaped object appears on the screen like the | | picture shown, with the four main buttons mapped out just ______|Y|______ like they are on your controller. Small red orbs appear at _____X B_____ the ends of the cross and move inwards, towards the |A| buttons. As soon as the orb lines up with the button, | | press that button to capture a sin. It's easy at first | | because the orbs travel slowly and usually one at a time. Things pick up though, and they'll travel much faster. Continue capturing these sins until time runs out. In addition to absolving the Damned Soul and receiving Holy experience, you'll also receive a bonus of White Souls depending on how many souls you captured while factoring out any sins that slipped by (ones that managed to pass the button without you pressing it on time). Punish/absolve him, then open the door. Focus on the Guardian Demon first, because more will appear regardless of the status of the first. A total of three appear, so focus on them all first while ignoring the Hell Minions. If you can use Redemption Mode, now would be a good time to do so. The exit will open once all fiends have perished. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 03 | | Look behind the stone sculpture to find the Silver Fountain; break it open | to receive the Silver Judas Coin. | Save your game at the Beatrice Statue, then grab onto the wire overhead. Shimmy over towards Charon for a demon to cut the wire, sending Dante down to the bottom of the boat. Climb along the Wall of the Damned to the right while avoiding random puffs of fire below. Ignore the first opening and continue to the right to find a defenseless demon curled up in the corner; destroy it for the CHARON'S OAR relic. Return to the previous opening and slip inside to enter the ship's interior. Use the White and Green Fountains here, then move towards the metal box on the left side of the room. Use the Right Bumper to grab hold of it, then pull it to the right side of the room and up the slight ramp. Push it into the alcove on the right side up against the grate on the wall. With the crate now on the opposite side of the boat, head over to the lever in the middle of the room. Turning the lever causes the wooden floor below you to slide south. Continue pulling the floor as far as it'll go. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 04 | | With the wooden floor as far south as it can and the metal crate now on the | right side of the room, pull the crate to the left side. Wedge it against | the left wall and the corner of the wooden platform and jump on top to reach | a well-hidden alcove containing a Silver Fountain. | Push the crate onto the north end of the movable floor, then pull the floor back to the north end. Use the crate to reach another Damned Soul for a cutscene. Punish or absolve ORPHEUS, break the Purple Fountain, and climb up the Wall of the Damned to reach the ship's deck. --- The River Acheron --- The battle will start off with a trio of Guardian Demons and a bunch of Hell Minions. Soon after, some Pests arrive. Since the three demons appear at the same time, you should probably deal with the Hell Minions first since they tend to get in the way. Remember to use magic like Righteous Path to knock enemies away so you can focus on others and not get swarmed. There is a Purple Fountain on the south end and a Green Fountain on the north end. After the first wave has been dispatched, an Acheron Beast climbs onto the deck and more Hell Minions appear. Don't worry about the minions, since the Acheron Beast will probably kill them himself. Deal with the beast and kill the rider, then take the reigns yourself. Guardian Demons and Hell Minions will arrive next. Use the beast's grab attack to kill the Guardian Demons and the slam attack to defeat the Hell Minions. These punks should give you little to no trouble. Next up: Charon. No one else is left, so walk up to the back of Charon's head and initiate the button sequence to rip his head right off the boat and fling it away like a ping pong ball. The boat will crash into a pillar and Dante (along with the beast) will grab onto the edge. Climb up the side of the crumbling pillar (the controls are the same on the beast as if you were by your lonesome). Lunge with A upwards and hop across to the adjacent pillar once you can no longer climb up. Once you reach the top, follow the button prompts to ditch the ride and climb over the edge. You're not out of the woods just yet! Run forward across the bridge and you'll soon be stuck on a pillar with no exit. As it topples forward, there is a very quick window where you can hit the Right Bumper to swing to safety; keep your finger on the button and ready to press down once the time comes. Welcome, boys and girls, to the first level of Hell. =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ LIMBO [0302] =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Immediately save your game and then talk to Virgil until he disappears. Slide down the Wall of the Damned and jump towards the cracked portion of the wall below. A Charred Minion rises from the ground in front of you and readies to attack. Quickly grab him with the Right Trigger, then use the Left Analog Stick to point towards the crack in the wall. You'll toss the exploding monster into the crack, and the explosion does the rest. Traverse through the hall to find Charon's head lodged in the wall nearby. Ignore his ramblings and use the Right Bumper when up against his head to push it out of the wall and into the darkness below. See ya! .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 05 | | Hug the left wall just before Charon's head to sneak out onto a balcony. | You will find the Silver Fountain here, usually joined by a Guardian Demon. | .------------------- | Beatrice Stone 01 | | Pass by where Charon's head was stuck to reach a dead end with a rare Gold | Fountain; break it open to find the first Beatrice Stone. Finding all three | Beatrice Stones allows you to automatically absolve damned souls without | having to go through that little minigame. | Additionally, there is another Relic Holder demon next to the fountain. Kill it for the EYES OF ST. LUCIA. Return to the hole in the wall where Charon's face was embedded in and go right to a door. Open it. And now we're given the privilege of killing naked, flaming babies with sickles for hands. Oh what a joyful and vibrant place Hell is. The Unbaptized Children aren't really that threatening once you take into account the face that they ARE babies, so swiftly brush through them until the enemies stop coming. Enter the hallway that opens up and chat with Virgil until he gives you LORD'S BLESSING, another cool relic. Enter the door beside Virgil and avoid the spinning blade trap on the floor as you smash the White and Purple Fountains. Open the door behind the trap to find another Damned Soul: ELECTRA. Do your business, then return to the hallway. Continue down the hall to encounter some more Charred Minions. Keep them at bay with your Holy Cross so you aren't caught in their explosions. Replenish your health at the Green Fountain and pry open the door onto a balcony. You're inching closer and closer to King Minos; we're almost there! It's a neat sight to stand near the edge of the balcony near King Minos and just watch him sentence the souls to the different levels of Hell. I like how you're able to see his throne in the distance throughout all of Limbo as you advance ever so slowly towards his location. It's almost a feeling of impending doom getting closer and closer. Nice touch added to the game. Proceed along the balcony to find a few more enemies. Grab the Charred Minion and send him crashing into the baddies behind to defeat them all, then take down the Guardian Demon and a handful of Unbaptized Children to open up the path ahead. Go through the door. After the scene, talk to Virgil a few times and then break open the White Fountain across from him. Advance up the ramp and stock up on health and mana at the Green and Purple Fountains. You can also destroy the statues lining the room's walls for White Souls. Stand next to the Green Fountain (or where it once stood) and jump south to reach a ledge overlooking where the White Fountain was below. Yank the lever here to cause the statue in the room's center to lower into the floor. Drop into the hole where the statue was lowered into and slay the Relic Holder to obtain SALADIN'S MERCY. Save your game, then flip the switch near the yellow marker to open up a crane-like device hanging over the chasm ahead. Hold the Right Bumper while standing on the edge to latch onto the grapple point. Swing across, then press A to jump and land safely on the other side, where King Minos, the Judge of the Dead, waits. .============================================================================. | BOSS: King Minos | '============================================================================' The battle begins with King Minos using his tentacles to attack Dante from below. King Minos may be blind, but he won't have much trouble inflicting damage on you. The tentacles that shoot from the ground below seem to appear in random locations, so move around in circles around the arena while dashing. While it'd be nice if you could stand in one place and hold down the Left Trigger, this attack is unfortunately unblockable. His second attack, King Minos will slam an arm on the ground, then drag his entire forearm from one side of the arena to the other. Just make sure to double jump when it comes sweeping by so you don't get smacked around. When King Minos leans back, run over to either side of the arena and grapple over to the yellow marker that appears; this is the easiest way to avoid his putrid breath attack. The boss often follows this up with a tongue lashing. Like, the literal kind! If you are ensnared in his forked tongue, follow the onscreen commands to free yourself. Otherwise, this is a good time to get up and slash the boss's face while he's lurched over. Use aerial attacks to attack King Minos's forehead so you can easily avoid his tongue if it comes whipping out at you again. Once you damage King Minos's face enough, he will pull himself backwards and cover his face in agony. His lower stomach will be revealed - the fleshy red portion of his stomach. Run over and begin hacking away at his weak point (Redemption Mode is always a good move here). Also don't forget about your magic spell as Righteous Path deals a nice amount of damage to King Minos. Once the boss shifts back into his normal position, he will retaliate by summoning a few enemies. The first wave consists of some Hell Minions, but later attempts will include Unbaptized Children and Guardian Demons. The boss fight follows a distinct pattern. King Minos starts off with his tentacle attack, then next uses his breath attack. After that, he keeps his head lowered in preparation for his tongue strike. tentacle attack -> breath attack -> tongue attack If you manage to get his by the boss's tongue, the pattern will repeat itself from the beginning. However, if you manage to slice apart the king's face enough, he will rear back in pain and allow you to target his weak point. After damaging his weak point enough, the boss will summon baddies and the pattern repeats itself. After inflicting a certain amount of pain on King Minos, he uses his arm sweep attack. The hand stays lowered to the ground, giving you an opportunity to engage in a series of button commands. Doing so will expose his lower stomach again. Attack it until the boss rears back and conjures up a wave of enemies (this time it's Unbaptized Children and a Guardian Demon). Afterwards, there is a slight change to the attack pattern. King Minos stops using his tentacle attack and replaces it with the arm sweep attack. He will now use the arm sweep move first, followed by the breath attack and finally the tongue attack. Continue slashing his face until he falls forward, then follow up with a chain of button commands to end the fight in a gruesome manner. ============================================================================== Dante earns the TAIL OF MINOS Relic for his troubles. Use the grapple point behind the battle arena to swing over to a cave and head inside. Continue down the trail to find a Green Fountain and a Beatrice Statue. After saving, slide down the rope against the cliffside. Here, you'll have to rappel along the side of the cliff as you slowly descend downward. Slide down to the bottom of the rope, then hold the Right Bumper as you run back and forth alongside the wall to build up momentum. Once you've gained enough speed and momentum to reach the rope to your right, double jump and cling onto it with the Right Bumper. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 06 | | On your descent into Lust, climb up the second rope to locate a Silver | Fountain at the very top. | The next Relic is close by, but it's quite hard to obtain. Above the third rope are two poles. Stay on the second rope below the Silver Fountain and stay about halfway down. Begin rappeling. If you go too low, you'll swing over to the third rope, but our destination is one of the poles above it. If you stay at the halfway point of the rope and start rappelling, you should be able to reach the first pole. It takes a lot of trial and error, but be patient with your rappelling and don't get too overzealous when trying to reach it. If you miss, you'll likely land on the third rope below, giving you a chance to rappel back to the second rope and try again. Once you manage to successfully reach the pole, climb up to find FRANCESCA'S BOOK. Slide down the pole again and drop onto the third rope. Up ahead is another pole that you can slide down to reach another set of ropes. Continue rappelling along the ropes until you reach a large glowing chain. As the game notes, you can attack while hanging from the ropes. Hold down the Right Bumper, then slash the glowing road block with X every time you swing towards it. Once the chain is broken, jump towards the grapple point on the other side and swing to the second rope. Some Pests appear, but you can kill them while simultaneously rappelling along the wall. Once you reach the next pole, slide all the way down for a cutscene. You will find FRANCESCA DA POLENTA lying on the ground here. If you want the "Forbidden Love" achievement, you best absolve her. After your decision, proceed along the purple-tinted cliff road to the charred and barren land ahead. Lust. =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ LUST [0303] =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ A giant tower rises in the distance and Cleopatra scales the side, but not before coating the tower in an electrical shield and taunting Dante. The tower is on the far side of a long, narrow track. At the far end, a ball of electricity will form on the track and move towards your location, pausing at several stops along the way. Each stop is marked by a circle on the track and flanked by two statues. Once the ball lightning reaches a stop, it pauses and sends out a shock of electricity. The only way you can cross the track unharmed is by standing between two stops as the ball lightning passes. There's a lever on the base of the left statue. Walk past the first set of statues towards the second set. Ignore the lever for now and continue to the third stop (where the ball lightnings appear). Search behind the left statue at the third stop to find a Wall of the Damned; the camera is a little clunky in the entire area here so search around blindly and you should find it. Climb along the wall to find FILIPPO'S RAGE. Return to the track. There is another Wall of the Damned in between the third and fourth stops, on the right side. .------------------- | Beatrice Stone 02 | | Descend down the Wall of the Damned between the third and fourth stops of | the track to find the Beatrice Stone. | Climb back up and proceed to the fourth stop on the track. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 07 | | Head over to the fourth stop. Again, search the left side of the stop to | find another Wall of the Damned. Climb across to reach a Silver Fountain | containing another Silver Judas Coin. | Now that we've found all the necessities here, it's time to enter Cleopatra's tower. In order to break the shield surrounding it, we must use the ball lightning to our advantage. Return to the second stop and the lever. The lever spins the direction of the stop backwards, which would send the ball lightning to the third stop instead of continuing along the track to the first stop like normal. There are some timing issues with the lever, but pull the lever as the ball lightning materializes on the third stop. If timed correctly, it should be shot back to the third stop and continue north instead of south - right into the base of the tower. The lightning will cut a hole in the shield at the tower's base, but it won't last forever. Quickly run along the track and through the opening to reach the tower's interior. Don't even bother talking to Virgil along the way. A Temptress of Lust makes her entrance in all of her magnificent, skanky glory. Well, it's hard to expect anything else in a place like this. Temptresses of Lust are very agile foes and often slither behind you during a combo and will interrupt with their sharp claws. They also have a large... who knows what that emerges from her... who knows where, that can damage you from a distance. The first Temptress of Lust is tough, but she's all alone. Unlike most enemies you would encounter in Hell, she will take the time during battle to pause and begin incessantly moaning, giving you an opening to interrupt her pleasure party. Two more appear after the first, meaning you'll have to juggle two dangerous foes at once. Replenish your health at the Green Fountain once the fight is over and turn the lever on the opposite side of the room. The stone snake head will begin to open, revealing its two fangs. Once the dial can be turned no longer, run over and break its two fangs before the mouth lowers back into the ground. Return to the lever and turn it all the way. Jump onto the stone snake's tongue to reach the ledge above. Speak with Virgil twice to receive TRISTAN'S DESIRE. There are two platforms on either side of the ledge, both containing a Purple and White Fountain. There is also a large, circular platform ahead that acts as an elevator. Behind Virgil are two ramps leading below the circular elevator. On the right is a Green Fountain, while on the left is a Beatrice Statue and a lever. Regain any lost health, then jump up onto the elevator. Move the statue out of the nook and anywhere onto the elevator. Go down the ramp on the left, save your game, then yank the lever. The elevator will move up towards the ceiling, but the statue prevents it from going up all the way. Jump onto the now raised elevator. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 08 | | With the elevator slightly raised and the ceiling still closed off, jump to | the ledge on the far left side of the elevator to find another coin. | On the far right side is another raised platform. Hop over to it, destroy the White Fountain, then pull the lever. Quickly jump back onto the elevator as the ceiling opens up and the elevator is shot upwards, with you on it. The elevator will rocket upwards, with Cleopatra climbing along the perimeter of the tower with you. Enemies will appear on the elevator, ranging from Guardian Demons to Temptresses of Lust. Keep the Temptress of Lust at bay with your Holy Cross, then follow up with light attacks. Once the first wave is destroyed, Cleopatra will bust a hole in the tower and slam down on the elevator. As she does this, press the Right Bumper to grapple to a grapple point to avoid getting spilled off the side of the elevator. Once it repositions itself, drop back on and resume fighting a new wave of foes. The second batch of enemies consists of a few Temptresses of Lust and a whole lotta Hell Minions. Cleopatra appears once more, as the game zooms in on her cans to reveal that her nipples are actually mouths. Unbaptized Children are then burped out of her nipple and coughed onto the elevator. Wow. It only took me two levels of Hell to realize how effed up this game is. Defeat the Unbaptized Children until a platform containing a Green Fountain appears. Kill the babies and Hell Minions that swarm the elevator and use the fountain if you are in need of health. After s'more fighting, a Purple Fountain appears on the other side of the elevator. Between fighting lesser enemies, target Cleopatra's hand, which is resting on the side of the elevator. Once she removes it in pain, the elevator will slowly rise. Head towards the left platform and jump up onto the ledge once the elevator is high enough. Pull the lever here to turn two snake statues on either side of Cleopatra. The statues should now be facing Cleopatra. Focus on her hand once more and try to ignore any Unbaptized Children or Temptresses of Lust. If you use light attacks, you should be able to knock away any monsters while targeting her hand. Once her hand is removed from the elevator, make your way to the right side and wait to jump up to the ledge here. Pull this lever to make the snake statues shoot out flames. If you performed this action swiftly, the snake statues should still be in place and they will scorch Cleopatra's breasts. Cleopatra gets pissed off, like any woman with burnt breasts would, and climbs up out of sight. Dante's health will be fully restored after shooing Cleopatra away, and the elevator continues to rise to the top of the tower. A swarm of Pests float near the elevator and attack, while two Seductresses of Lust also appear. These enemies are tougher than Temptresses of Lust and can seduce Dante. Press B repeatedly to avoid getting drawn in and hurt. It's usually hard for me to differentiate between Seductresses of Lust and Temptresses of Lust. I mean, they're all creepy naked women, right? Try and deal with the two chicks first, because the sheer number of Pests means that trying to kill them all off first would take a long time. Finish off the Pests lastly with Holy Cross or grab attacks as the elevator comes to a sudden halt. First, head to the right side of the elevator and destroy the White Fountain. PAOLA MALATESTA lies below the pole. Again, if you want the "Forbidden Lovers" achievement, absolve him (you'll unlock it if you absolved Francesca da Polenta earlier). Climb back up the pole and proceed to the left side of the elevator now. Restock at the Green and Purple Fountains, then descend the Wall of the Damned below. Statues lining the wall will shoot out bolts of electricity, so time your climb along the wall. Save at the Beatrice Statue at the end of the wall, then punish/absolve SEMIRAMIS. Hug the side of the cliff next to Semiramis and Dante will fall and grab the edge. Drop down below to the ledge, then kill the Relic Holder to receive the ARROW OF PARIS. Jump to the left to grab onto the Wall of the Damned and climb back up to the save point. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 09 | | To the left of the Beatrice Statue is a gap that can be crossed in order to | reach another Silver Fountain. | Continue up the second Wall of the Damned for a cutscene. Boss fight! .============================================================================. | BOSS: Cleopatra & Marc Antony | '============================================================================' Marc Antony is the foe you should be worried about. He carries around a large, rectangular shield that will block most of your attacks. Not only is it used for defense, but he can hurt Dante when he smacks the shield in the ground; you will be hurt if too close. In addition, Antony also has some basic sword combos that you need to deal with. The three-hit combo is usually followed up with a charged swing that cannot be blocked (any sword strike that is coated in flames cannot be blocked). The boss can also send a buzzsaw-like projectile at you if you are too far away. When the boss's health starts getting low, he will plant his shield straight up as swords pop out of the ground in pursuit of Dante. He will then follow up with either a spinning swing or an overhead slam. The latter produces a shockwave that can be avoided by jumping. Additionally, Antony's sword will be stuck in the ground, giving you a second or two to attack. Cleopatra mainly stays on the sidelines and lets her man do the dirty work. She'll occasionally lend her support by slamming onto the arena with her fist or even beefing up Marc Antony with a spell called Lust Storm. When Marc Antony is surrounded by the purple tornado, avoid him at all costs. Once things start to get heated up, Cleopatra will lend a hand and begin healing her lover. Once you see Marc Antony become enveloped in a green aura, ignore him and run over to Cleopatra. Strike her hand several times to knock her off of the tower and interrupt the healing process. As a bonus, you receive some health! You now have a minute or so of uninterrupted action before Cleopatra climbs back up to the top. Marc Antony blocks most of your shots, so the best way to damage him is to use Repayment (your counterattack). Time your blocks just right so that you leave an open window to counterattack and lower Antony's defenses. Additionally, evade or dodge his sword swings, stun him with your Holy Cross, then retaliate with light attacks. As the boss's health wears down, Cleopatra will heal him more often. Just knock her hand away to resume targeting Marc Antony. As the fight nears, use Righteous Path more often to throw him off-balance and activate Redemption Mode for the finishing touch. Marc Antony coughs up ANTONY'S STANDARD after kicking the bucket. Technically, the fight isn't over as you have to confront Cleopatra. All you must do is follow a series of button commands. I normally don't go in-depth with them, but I thought I'd point out one button prompt that was a tad confusing. It's a picture of the Left Analog Stick; the top half of the circle is red while the bottom is black. It was confusing for me what they were asking me to perform. All they want you to do is move the Left Analog Stick in an upwards arc: start by pointing to the right, then move up and left. ============================================================================== After the tense moment, Dante earns Lust Storm. Equip it in the menu and exit for the elevator to take you down to the bottom of the tower. Just like the ascent up the tower, going down requires you to fight monsters along the way as well. Test out your new magic on the Hell Minions and Guardian Demons. Lust Storm protects Dante from incoming enemy attacks and slightly damages anyone who touches the bright purple barrier. As you fight Hell's minions, rocks will rain from the sky. Avoid the shadows and continue killing off baddies. Eventually, boulders will drop down one by one, breaking apart portions of the elevator. This leaves you with significantly less fighting room, so subsequent enemy groups will be harder to take down. Soon you will be left with no elevator below your feet. As Dante plummets down the shaft, swing to the grapple point that appears and continue swinging along the statues to safety. Chat it up with Virgil, then walk past him to find a Green and White Fountain. Slide down the pole and avoid the flame jets to reach a rope. Rappel the rest of the way and continue climbing downward to the third level. Break the chain along the way and swing to the grapple point, then slide down the pole. Drop down onto a wire below. Shimmy behind you (to the right) to reach a tiny alcove. Drop down and wait for the flame jet to stop, then slay the Relic Holder for the RAIN OF GLUTTONY. Leap back onto the wire, then shimmy across while taking the occasional pause to avoid getting burned by the flame jets. Drop onto the ledge, then restock at the Green/Purple Fountains. Talk to Virgil, save your game, and continue your descent. .============================================================================. | BOSS: Cerberus | '============================================================================' Rule #1: focus on one head at a time. That's the most important rule when fighting the three-headed dog-- err, worm. The square arena contains four shiny, glowing rocks near the northern end. Two on the left side, two on the right. If you stand near one of the rocks, the head facing directly in front will attack with a diving lunge. The preparation time is slow, giving you some time to avoid getting run over. After one of Cerberus's head performs the diving lunge attack, you have about one second to get in a couple hits. There's a better way to deal damage, though. Run over to the closest rock (farthest from Cerberus) either on the left or right side. Pick one side throughout the battle, because you want to target one head at a time. Destroy the rock by pressing the Right Bumper, then repeatedly mashing B. Be quick, or Cerberus will hit you with one of its heads and finish you off rather easily. Destroying the rock will reveal a flame jet, so any lunge attack used by Cerberus will result in a nasty burn. If timed properly, you will destroy the rock just before the head dives forward and it will be torched. The head will be dazed for a few moments, giving you plenty of time to attack. The rock will be destroyed, but will return after a while. You can try to target and break the next rock, the one closest to Cerberus, but you'd be risking a higher chance of getting hit by its head. You can also play it safe and wait for the rock to regenerate to repeat the strategy. Simply run around while avoiding Cerberus's puke balls it sends your way. Either way, once the head has taken enough abuse, you can follow a button command to sever the boss's head with one clean swipe. Now you have one less head to deal with and one less head to vomit projectiles at you. Also, decapitating one of the boss's heads gives you some health. Focus on the other head now, using the same tactics that took down the first one. Lust Storm is a good spell to use to cut down on the damage dealt to Dante from Cerberus's puke balls and lunge attack. The vomit cannot be blocked, but using Lust Storm does prevent as much damage being dealt to you as normal. Plus, with one head down, the middle head starts spitting out a lot more puke than before. This makes destroying the rocks a bit harder than before. Once you are down to the middle head and the middle head alone, it will retaliate by using rapid-fire barf attacks. Seriously, it's like a machine gun that spews vomit! Occasionally it will lunge at Dante, but since it's in the middle you don't know if it will lunge to the left or to the right. Hm. You still need to destroy the rocks to expose the flames and stun Cerberus's middle head, but doing so is much harder due to the increased vomit attack. Instead, take the time to destroy the rocks immediately after the boss uses is dive attack. Just as it dives forward and misses, it'll slowly move back into position; use this time to destroy one or even two rocks. When the middle head dives forward and gets burned by the flame jets, it'll thrash about, but stay in the air. Don't worry, as you still damaged the beast even though you can't reach it with your scythe. Continue burning Cerberus's middle head until it collapses, then complete one final button prompt to cut off the head a third time. Beware though, if you fail to complete the button commands in any way, Dante will automatically die and the battle will restart from the beginning! Don't mess up! ============================================================================== Dante is awarded with AZRAEL'S APPRENTICE after a successful win. With the watchdog out of the way, Dante is granted access into Gluttony. =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ GLUTTONY [0304] =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Acid rain falls from above during your trek through Gluttony. Don't worry, it is only for aesthetic purposes and it does not hurt Dante. Here in Gluttony, pay attention to the ground that you walk on, since nasty Gorger Worms lurk underneath. If you spot any cloudy, disturbed portions of the ground, avoid them or you will awaken a Gorger Worm. These tough foes have a lot of health and can pack a wallop even though they cannot move far. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 10 | | In the entrance to Gluttony. This fountain is in plain view, just past the | first Gorger Worm. | Use the Green and Purple Fountains, then slide down into the cavern below. You can't help but wake up the Gorger Worms here, as you must defeat them all to open the path ahead. There are also a few Gluttony Minions down here in the cave. They are just like Hell Minions, but have much more health. Once all four Gorger Worms and the army of Gluttony Minions are reduced to rubble, the rest of the cave opens up. CIACCO is resting next to the Beatrice Statue ahead. Determine his fate, then break the White Fountain and save your game at last. When you exit the cave opening which is revealed to be a giant mouth, it closes. Make sure not to fall into the pool of bile, as it kills you instantly. Stay on the platform while defeating the Pests, then jump over to the next giant mouth. Wait for it to open, then jump inside to find another Damned Soul: CLODIA. Jump back out and travel to the third gaping maw by using the horizontal wire. Head down the throat to encounter Virgil along the way. Make sure to speak with him two times to earn CIACCO'S BILE. Up ahead is a strange portal, but you cannot access it until you defeat a horde of foes: Gluttony Minions, Guardian Demons, and one pesky Gorger Worm. You can treat yourself to some health and mana at the two fountains ahead. After, step through the portal. Cutscene time. The Glutton is basically a giant, fat steaming pile of man beef. Like a horribly disfigured sumo wrestler. With mouths for arms. As one could clearly deduce by taking one look at him, the Glutton isn't all that agile. As a bonus, he only has one attack: he spews vomit in an arc in front of him. Run behind the Glutton and attack, then wait for the toxic vomit to dissolve. He isn't too hard to take down; I just spammed Soul Stabber. The room collapses, revealing a weird, disfigured chamber that kinda reminds me of an M.C. Escher painting. I would love to hold your hand through this and offer you an ASCII diagram of the room, but the fact that the room is 3D makes it near-impossible for me to provide you with a picture. --- 1. Run through the portal behind you. You will appear on the northern wall. Pull the lever here (lever #1) to move the first portal you went through, then go back through the portal you just came out of. 2. Ignore the lever (lever #2) here, then climb the wall to your right. Break the White Fountain open and continue up the Wall of the Damned. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 11 | | At the top of the portal room. Follow the instructions in the walkthrough to | find out how to reach it. | 3. After collecting the Silver Judas Coin, return to lever #2. Pull it to make a platform appear, then go through the portal to the left to appear on the platform. Quickly jump down to reach the ledge before the platform moves out from under you. 4. Smash the White Fountain to your right and pay attention to the floating platform on the left side of the room. Wait for it to stop below the portal on the ceiling above. When the time is right, enter the portal to the right of the fountain to drop onto the platform. 5. Ride the platform. As it moves to the right towards the center of the room, double jump to the far right side of the room onto a ledge (the southeast corner of the room). .------------------- | Beatrice Stone 03 | | In the southeast corner of the portal room. Follow the instructions in the | walkthrough to find out how to reach it. | 6. Wait for the floating platform to hover underneath the portal on the northwest ceiling again, then fall into the portal next to you to drop onto the platform again. 7. Ride the platform as it eventually goes through a portal to exit the room. Wow, that was stupid and totally unnecessary, considering how I do not yet understand what teleporting mirrors have to do with gluttony. --- Okay, this is more like it. Travel over to the Beatrice Statue, open the White Fountain, then save your game. Slide down the pole and onto the rope, then swing over to the second pole. Climb up the pole instead of down to find a Silver Fountain and a Relic Holder. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 12 | | After exiting the portal room, slide down onto the rope and swing over to | the second pole. Instead of sliding down, climb up to find the coin. | Also don't forget to snag OCTAVIAN'S GOLD before sliding down the pole. Avoid the flame jets as you drop onto the tripwire, then shimmy over to another rope below. Drop down from the rope and onto the floor. Grab the side of the rock below, then B for a few seconds. Release to push the rock to the left, temporarily putting out the flames blocking the path. With the flames out, jump back up to the rope and swing across. Hack apart the giant chain and slide down the pole onto another wire. Five flame jets block your path, so time yourself as you go from right to left. The flame jets activate in order, so follow each jet as you reach the other side. Dead end? Not quite. With your finger kept on top of the Right Bumper, drop down with A. Once you see the button prompt, quickly tap the Right Bumper to swing onto a grapple point. Swing across some flame jets onto a rope, then rappel across to one final pole. At the bottom of the shaft, continue into the generic-looking cave. Double jump onto a ledge; before you pull yourself up, shimmy to the right behind a large rock structure. All you should be able to see are Dante's feet dangling below the bottom of the structure. Pull yourself up to enter a super secret hidden alcove containing the CROWN OF CARTHAGE. Jump down and hop back onto the ledge, then pull yourself up. Access the Green and Purple Fountains. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 13 | | Inside what I have now dubbed "Generic Cave". What? It just looks like a | normal-ass cave! Certainly something you'd see in real life as opposed to | Hell. Anyways, it's on a high ledge above the Green and Purple Fountains. To | reach it, jump onto the ledge across from the two fountains, then double | jump to the other side to reach the Silver Fountain. | .------------------- | Beatrice Stone 04 | | If you were wondering, there is a ledge across from the Silver Judas Coin, | but is blocked by a rock arch. It contains a Beatrice Stone, but it's pretty | hard to reach. To do so, return to the first ledge and stay on the far north | end. Perform a delayed double jump to reach it. It's really hard to get and | you may want to skip it if you just want to get the stone somewhere else. | Totally your choice. | Exit the Generic Cave. Talk to Virgil before jumping onto the moving platforms. Hop into the cauldron and cross the platforms. That molten-hot liquid looks dangerous! Ride to the top and activate the lever to open a path. Uh-oh! The path closes off again and molten hot liquid begins pouring through the grate and into the cauldron below. As the liquid level rises up, you must defeat groups of monsters before the cauldron fills up and overflows onto you. Deal with the Pests first, then target the Guardian Demons. Fire Minions emerge next. Remember, stun them with your Holy Cross before vanquishing them. Once the last of the enemies have been killed off, the lever reappears. Turn it to make the path open up, then dash onto it as the cauldron fills up. Close call! Bust open the White Fountain and save your game. Jump along the moving gears next to you. Start up the first pile of gears and keep your footing, then jump across the gap to the next set. Before moving downward towards the rock ledge, look up at the spinning gear against the wall in the gap. Perform a double jump to reach the gear. There's also a ledge to your right with a Damned Soul here, but a vertical gear prevents you from the easy access. Instead, time a double jump to leap around the gear and onto the base of the ledge. Pull yourself up and punish/absolve TARPEIA. Return to the second pile of gears and make your way down the slope and onto the platform. Break the Green and Purple Fountains, then open the door and proceed through. The door locks behind you and a Hoarder-Waster rises up from the ground. These guys only have one attack, but it's a doozy. While you'd think that two conjoined zombies would have a tough time moving around, they squash those suspicions by performing a tornado attack. They'll spin around at great speeds and shoot around the room with little control. You cannot interrupt this attack with normal means (only magic will do the trick), so either use mana to hit the Hoarder-Waster as it pinballs around the room or wait for it to stop. The Hoarder-Waster doesn't to much to defend themselves while you are wailing on them, so this should be an easy fight. A band of Greed Minions will appear after the Hoarder-Waster kicks it. Unlike Gluttony Minions, Greed Minions are very quick on their feet and can annoy you greatly as they jump around like monkeys and dodge your scythe. Like all minions, I find it easiest to grab and punish/absolve them for a one-hit KO, since you don't get attacked during this sequence. However, shift your focus to the two Hoarder-Wasters that soon appear. Use Vile Tornado to clear away the Greed Minions and focus on the Hoarder-Wasters. Once you have cleared the room of enemies, a lever appears in the room's center. You'll notice the moaning creepy orange zombie freaks crawling out of the walls. Well, you can eradicate them all with one simple yank of the lever, as giant spike traps will lower from the ceiling along the walls, slicing the weird freaks apart like grated cheese. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 14 | | After clearing the room of Hoarder-Wasters, grab onto the edge of the alcove | and pull yourself up to reach the Silver Fountain. | These spike traps also double as platforms, so you have to use them to reach the room's exit. But first, a Relic to find. Pull the lever on the floor, then immediately run and jump into the alcove. After some hesitation, the middle spike trap falls to the floor. But with you elevated on the alcove, you can climb onto the top of the spike trap. The safe part. Step onto the top of the spike trap, then immediately jump onto the spike trap on the right before it rises out of reach. From here, it should take you upwards towards another Relic Holder. Claim the DEMON'S WING, then drop back down to the floor. Next up, getting the heck outta here. Climb into the alcove and use the lever here to open up the exit. It'll begin to close, but you should be safe if you are quick on your feet. Immediately after, jump down and activate the spike traps again. Like before, jump back into the alcove before the middle spike trap can plummet down onto you. Ride the middle spike trap up and through the exit. Just avoid the spikes on the side of the door as it closes in on you. With perfect timing, you should slip right through without a scratch on you. Ride the elevator down and enter the next chamber. A Beast Tamer in the distance locks the door between the two of you, leaving you stranded in this large room. Long blades radiate out from the structure in the center and slowly move around the room like a fan. Jump over these blades as they pass by you. Jump down to the basement below. Normally this is the consequence for getting pushed off the edge by a blade or unintentionally falling off of the ledge, but there is a Silver Judas Coin down here. Kill the Pests and Hoarder-Waster first to reopen the path leading back up to the top. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 15 | | After killing the foes in the basement, open the Silver Fountain on the | right-hand side of the area. | Climb up the Wall of the Damned to reach the top again, then begin your way around the room's perimeter. Jump across each of the gaps to reach the door on the other side. Before going through, leap into the alcove on the right to find GESSIUS FLORUS. Do whatever you want to him, then return to the door and head on through. Before taking the next door, pull the lever that the demon pulled before. Doing so will stop the blades and open the cage in the central structure, revealing a Relic Holder. From the ledge that the door rests on, double jump to the structure hanging from the middle of the room and collect WASTED GOLD, then return to the door. Open the door, smash the Green/Purple Fountain combo, and save your game. Continue forward to encounter the same Beast Tamer from before, who retreats through a closed door once more. Walk towards the dial and begin turning it to slowly open the gate. The game stops you, and two buzzsaws on the south end of the room move north along their track towards you. The saw blades always stay on their track, so if you stand on the central strip at all times you should be fine. You must turn the dial to lower the gate while pairs of Guardian Demons attack. Use the buzzsaws to your advantage, since they can slay a Guardian Demon in one hit. Immediately begin turning the dial until the demons get in striking range, then stop and use your Holy Cross to push them along the saw blade tracks. The part that makes this task so difficult is that you only have roughly two minutes to do this, or the walls will close in on you. Also make sure not to turn the dial the wrong way between pauses, as you always want to turn it clockwise. Your best bet is getting a good head start. As soon as the game pans towards the buzzsaws and they start moving, dash towards the dial and start moving it. It takes a good few seconds for the first wave of Guardian Demons to appear, so you should already get a great head start. Once you make it through, Dante will have to deal with an Asterian Beast on the other side. Guardian Demons and Exploding Minions also join in on the fun. Focus entirely on the Asterian Beast, only taking time to dodge the Exploding Minions when they begin glowing and are ready to burst. Kill the Beast Tamer and take control of the Asterian Beast. Use the monster to destroy the fountains surrounding the room, then pry open the door you just came from. Waste no time in running to the other side of the room and prying open the door here. The Asterian Beast can't hold the door open forever, so make sure to slip through this door before the walls close in on you. Now that you're safe and sound, talk to Virgil for awesome insight and no Relics. Boo. Begin up the side of the Wall of the Damned until you reach a fork. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 16 | | At the fork, climb to the right. You'll notice that the wall angles down, | leading into a small enclosed area. Descend to the ground to find the Silver | Judas Coin. | Climb back up the wall and continue to the right, following the path all the way to a second enclosed area containing the COIN OF PLUTUS Relic. Return to the fork and climb upwards. Run over to the edge of the platform and swing to the grapple point. Swing across the gap and double jump onto the wire on the far side. Shimmy across the lava and drop down below. Doing so will trigger the appearance of a Throne Demon. This guy is basically a Guardian Demon that was given a big axe and a fancy suit of armor. He has a few interesting attacks, like hurling fireballs and a dash attack, but otherwise treat him just like a Guardian Demon. The Throne Demon will fall, and the path opens back up. Access the White Fountain and walk along the path. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 17 | | Found on the path that opens up after slaying the Throne Demon. Pretty hard | to miss if you ask me. | Yank the lever at the end of the trail to lower a wall back where you fought the Throne Demon. Return there to seal yourself onto the circular platform. A pair of Hoarder-Wasters attack, and needless to say, they are much more dangerous in close-range perimeters such as this platform. Try to target them together so one doesn't use his tornado attack while you attack the other. A second circular platform moves towards your location. Jump onto it before the one you're standing on tips over. Defeat the two Seductresses of Lust (why are they here in Greed?) and the Pests to lower another wall up ahead. Wait for the platform to take you across the lowered wall, then drop down onto the trail. Replenish your health at the Green Fountain and your mana at the Purple Fountains along the walkway. If your health and mana are in check, then leave them be. Jump up onto the central pillar and activate the lever. A fireball shoots out of the base of the pillar, destroying a pile of bones and revealing a dial down on the walkway. A Throne Demon and several Pests appear. It seems to me that the Pests keep appearing until the Throne Demon is dead, so focus on the big man. After he falls, two more Throne Demons appear together. If you can enter Redemption Mode, use it against the pair of freaks. Once they fall, eliminate the remaining Pests and head over to the dial. Turn the dial clockwise to rotate the pillar. Now that the base is positioned facing to the right, pull the lever to send a fireball to the right side of the walkway, obliterating a statue and creating a stepping stone. Now do the same for the other side of the room. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 18 | | Use the pillar to send a fireball at the statue on the right. It lowers a | spire into the lava, creating a stepping stone to the room above. Jump onto | it and into the room to find the coin. | The left side leads to the exit, so head there next. Save at the Beatrice Statue before exiting the chamber. Open the two White Fountains before proceeding onto the elevator. Talk to Virgil on the other end and hop across onto the large arena. --- Plutus, the God of Wealth --- The first wave of monsters that appear before the statue of Plutus are Greed Minions and Hoarder-Wasters. Nothing too terrible. Next up: Exploding Minions and Seductresses of Lust. Obviously, use the Exploding Minions against the Seductresses of Lust for an easy victory. After the second wave, the enemies will stop and the Plutus statue's eyes will open, sending out a beam of light as a gold block rises from the center of the room. If the gold block is under the light, it'll stay solid, but will end up disintegrating when cloaked in darkness. Rotate the dial at the south end of the room to the left to make a larger gold block materialize, then move the dial to the right back to its original position. You should have two gold blocks both showered in light and in sturdy form. You can now climb up the two blocks and onto the Plutus statue. Open the White Fountain and save your game, then take the door behind the statue. Bust open the Green Fountain here and grab a hold of the horizontal rope. Shimmy all the way across the gap and talk to Virgil a few times. Access the White Fountain before grabbing onto the grapple point. Swing over to the Wall of the Damned and ascend to the very top. Four Seductresses of Lust attack. I hate these enemies so much. Activate Lust Storm and go at 'em. A Glutton appears after a few have been killed, but deal with the remaining ladies before taking on the fatboy. After that, some Exploding Minions arrive, which can be used to finish off the Glutton. Next up, you will have to face off against more Exploding Minions and more Seductresses of Lust, plus a Throne Demon! Target the Seductresses of Lust using the Exploding Minions because they are FAR more annoying than a single Throne Demon. Next, use Redemption Mode if possible and once again only target the hoes. Coming out victorious doesn't really earn you much, aside from a White Fountain an access to the exit. Guess that's good enough. Swing across to the stack of moving gears. Two crushers will periodically... crush stuff along the two gears, so you will have to dash underneath while moving against the gears. Once you get across both, enter the door on the other side. Climb along the Wall of the Damned and save your game at the end. Break the Purple and Green Fountains, then punish/absolve FULVIA. Pass through the door and ride the elevator. Activate the lever at the bottom to raise a platform leading you to an Asterian Beast. After finishing off the Beast Tamer, another one appears via the elevator and hijacks the beast from you. Grand Theft Monster! You'll pretty much have to repeat the previous strategy once more to take down the second Beast Tamer. Once the second one is done with, you can freely ride the beast, taking out innocent Throne Demons with ease. Push the block at the north end of the platform out of the way, then follow the trail to a Wall of the Damned. Climb along to enter another room containing a gold Plutus Statue. Slide down to the ground; a waterfall of lava prevents you from backtracking. Begin killing monsters left and right. An occasional Beast Tamer will appear and try to kick you off of the reigns. If this happens, repeatedly press B to foil his plans. If you're too slow, you'll get knocked off and have to slay the rider. Continue stomping on Throne Demons and Greed Minions until a gold block appears in the northwest corner of the room. Like the ones in the previous gold room, they will slowly dissolve when not under the light given off by the Plutus statue. Move it onto the gold square switch on the right side of the room to lower the Plutus statue into the ground. Climb back onto the Wall of the Damned (the lava waterfall disappeared, obviously) and jump to the left side of the room. Continue along the Wall of the Damned to backtrack to the room where you had to fight all of those enemies. It was like five minutes ago, remember? Of course you do. More Throne Demons will attack, as well as the occasional Beast Tamer. Again, worry about the Beast Tamers first and use your stomp attack to clear the enemies down at your feet. I don't know if this could apply for everyone, but I noticed a glitch where I was able to walk through the northern wall. I would walk straight through and kinda walk around in nothingness. Not normal, and not cool, so just avoid the northern wall entirely. >_> Dante's father will confront him and offer up some father-son bonding time. Kinda. Open the northern wall to accept his invitation. The disc falls below and Dante lands on top of it... without the Asterian Beast. Just where exactly did it go? I'd rather fight a boss battle on top of one of those things than just by my lonesome... .============================================================================. | BOSS: Alighiero | '============================================================================' Hopefully you have the counter abilities Repayment and Retribution. Not only because they are essential to your survival in Hell and you should have gotten them a long time ago, but they really pay off during this boss fight. Alighiero often uses his cross as a boomerang. He'll toss it at Dante in which it'll smack him in the face, then keep coming back for more. During this abuse, block at the right time and counterattack with a light scythe attack to send the cross back at your father. Now it'll boomerang into him instead! If you get up close, the boss will use an unblockable cross swing. If it glows yellow, then it is unblockable, so dodge instead of trying to block or counterattack. Alighiero is a fat wad, so he may have trouble moving around, but he is pretty quick at dishing out attacks. After depleting a quarter of his health, Alighiero falls to one knee and the outer ring of the arena crumbles into the lava. Obviously, run to the center when he drops to avoid instantly dying, but also to attack the man while he's down. Alighiero starts using a new attack, which pretty much turns this fight from pretty easy to a "hoo boy this is really starting to get on my damn nerves" level of toughness. Alighiero plunges his cross into the ground, leaving an imprint of the cross sticking up. This illusion will release an energy of shockwave periodically, usually once every second or so. The cross illusion will release about five or six energy shockwaves before disappearing. This kinda puts a damper on things because now you have to worry about one extra hazard. Aside from dealing with Alighiero's close-range slams or long- range boomerangs, you now have to jump over shockwaves. Blegh. At this point, the only way to win is to be really good at countering. Or to be really careful, but at that rate it'll take like an hour to win the fight. You can counter the shockwaves, and since they appear at the same rate every time, it kinda helps with the timing. If Alighiero is close enough and you counter a shockwave, counterattack to damage the boss. Lust Storm also helps greatly here. Once you get him down to a quarter health left, another portion of the arena falls apart, leaving things very hectic. Alighiero will also use a new attack very sporadically: he raises the gold cross in the air and it begins to shine with a very intense light. The boss gets coated with a strong aura, so simply run as far away from Alighiero as possible so you don't get creamed. The fight gets harder with limited space, because it becomes harder to avoid Alighiero's unblockable cross swings. Also, he can create two cross illusions at a time, meaning you'll have to block two sets of shockwaves at a time. As the boss battle rages on, it basically turns into a raging counter-fest. Annoying as hell, pardon the pun. ============================================================================== After sticking it to your dad, Dante receives the EYE OF ALIGHIERO Relic and a new magic spell: Sins of the Father (Alighiero's boomerang attack). Refill your health at the exit and save your game. First, double jump onto the ledge above the Green Fountain to find the HOARDER'S PURSE Relic, then drop down and continue through the door. Pull the lever on the elevator to begin crossing the chasm. A whole bunch of Pests will attack from a distance, but they're no big deal. I mean, you just killed your own father. I think you can handle a few bats. Some Greed Minions and a Hoarder-Waster are waiting for you on the other end. Execute every last one. Break open the White and Purple Fountains, then activate the lever. Now at the bottom of the elevator, you'll begin your descent into Anger. Just for the record, there's nothing of worth here, so you can make a hasty climb down to the next level. Continue to the cliffside and slide down the pole. Drop and grab the grapple point before swinging to the next pole. The falling rocks and giant meteors seem to be for show only, because I don't think any of them can hurt you. Drop down onto the rope and break the giant chain, then swing to the grapple point. Leap onto the final pole and slide on down into Anger. =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ ANGER [0306] =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Destroy the White Fountain and speak to Virgil before heading off towards the nearby swamp. You will see your destination in the distance. Jump onto the horizontal rope and shimmy over to the Beatrice Stone. Save, then continue along the stepping stones to reach a circular area. You'll be sealed in, as several Greed Minions attack. There are also two Gorger Worms here that you should worry about. Defeat the pair of Gorger Worms, the Greed Minions, and some Pests to open up the exit. Swing across the pool of murky water using the grapple point to reach a movable block and a gate. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 19 | | Move the block slightly south and lean it up against the vines covering the | right wall. Next, use the block as a stepping stone to reach the ledge high | above. From here, break the Silver Fountain to retrieve the coin. | Move the block south onto the pillar, then jump on top of the block as the pillar begins sinking into the muck. This will reveal a cave below the gate, so wait for the pillar to move as far down as it can, then slip into the cave. Talking with Virgil here twice will earn you MEDUSA'S CALL. Break the White Fountain for some Souls. The yellow marker points you to a Wall of the Damned. There's kinda hard to spot here since they blend in with the vines so well. Climb along; instead of continuing down, make a pit stop at the White Fountain. Smash it, then return to the wall and start climbing down. Leap across the gap to the other side and follow it to a tunnel. There are two exits here, but both get sealed as some Fire Guardians appear. Like Fire Minions, Fire Guardians must be stunned with a Holy Cross attack before being killed. Unlike the ones we've seen so far, Fire Guardians can float around like a mist and their stun period is much shorter. Kill a few Fire Guardians until some Seductresses of Lust appear, then deal with them first. Use the Exploding Minions that ultimately arrive to make things easier on yourself. The two exits open up. One is sealed with a wooden gate that's across from a pool of slimy water. Destroy it with a few Holy Cross attacks, then jump across to reach BOUDICA. Choose her fate, then take the second exit leading to a long wire and a Green Fountain. Refuel, then shimmy all the way across. .------------------- | Beatrice Stone 05 | | After shimmying across the rope and before dropping onto the circular disc | in the water, open the fountain to find a Beatrice Stone. Again, if you | already have three, then this will be a basic White Fountain. | Open the Purple Fountain here as well. Return to the wire and shimmy to the middle, then drop onto the circular platform below. It starts to slowly descend into the water, then stops. A Guardian Demon emerges from the ledge above and attacks. The more Guardian Demons and Throne Demons you kill, the more the platform rises up to the ledge. After about three or four of each, you should reach the ledge. Enter the tunnel. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 20 | | At the top of the rising circular platform is a Silver Fountain, just at the | mouth of the tunnel entrance. | Move through the cave, jumping over any pools of green water. I kinda imagined Anger to be more like, fiery and explosive, ya know? Not a dark, murky swamp. But I like it so far! Climb up the Wall of the Damned to reach a familiar trio: a Green Fountain, a Purple Fountain, and a Beatrice Statue. Follow the walkway to the left for a brief scene. Punish or absolve HECUBA, then begin spinning the dial in the center of the room. Doing so will extinguish the flames on the platform above. Turn it all the way, then climb up on the platform. Run over to the gear on the wall and push it along the track to the left. Be quick, or the flames will reach the platform and ignite the flame jets on the platform. Once you move the platform up one level, a few Fire Minions arrive. Quickly kill them, then continue moving the gear along the track to avoid the oncoming flames. Each level contains either Fire Minions, Exploding Minions, or a combination of the two. Along the way, rocks will block the tracks, so you'll have to destroy them first before you can move the gear to the next level. Once you reach the very top, push the gear into the end of the track to make a Wall of the Damned appear to the left. Jump onto it and pull the lever at the top for a short cutscene. Continue along the edge of the tower roof. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 21 | | At the top of the tower, on a platform to the right of Virgil. | Jump past the Silver Fountain to find a Relic Holder with the GUIDING FLAME Relic. Drop back down and talk to Virgil a few times. We just spent all that time moving to the top of the tower, and now we have to make our way down. Fortunately, going down is a lot easier than goin' up. Slide down the two poles to reach the bottom, where you will find a Beatrice Stone and another Damned Soul: FILIPPO ARGENTI. Step onto the platform circle to begin moving into the Styx Marsh. --- The Styx Marsh --- Things will be pretty easy at the start, as only a few Pests will bother you for the first few minutes. Once you reach the other end of the marsh, however, you will realize that you're riding on something much more than a simple platform. Perform the button sequence to reach dry land. .============================================================================. | BOSS: Phlegyas | '============================================================================' This really isn't a boss battle at all, but I have my own specific reasons to include Phlegyas along with the other bosses (mainly because I have nowhere to put his journal info). A handful of Greed Minions will be summoned by Phlegyas. He doesn't really attack aside from a single fist slam, so ignore him entirely as you deal with the Greed Minions. You cannot even damage the boss, so focus on the enemies entirely. Next up is a Hoarder-Waster along with some Exploding Minions. After that, a nearby gate will lower, giving you access to a Green and White Fountain. Walk past the fountains to a grapple point and swing across. Open the Purple Fountain, then activate a nearby lever to raise a bridge in the distance. It will begin to lower, however, and Phlegyas follows Dante over to his location. Defeat the wave of Unbaptized Children that Phlegyas summons. After those guys, some Seductresses of Lust and a Glutton appears. Try to use Phlegyas to aid you in fighting these baddies, because his huge fist slam can instantly kill most enemies. The final wave of monsters is a couple of Seductresses of Lust and a Guardian Demon. After that, the gate opens ahead. Use the Purple and White Fountains, then return to the lever and raise the bridge. Cross it and use the Green Fountain; go north along the walkway to initiate another enemy encounter. Kill the lone Guardian Demon to make about six appear at one time. Phlegyas usually interacts more here, lending his hand by using a flame breath attack. Not only can it kill most enemies in one fell swoop, but it can hurt you too. If you are caught on fire, wiggle the Left Analog Stick left and right. After some Guardian Demons, Throne Demons, Seductresses of Lust, Greed Minions, and Gluttons, you should be on your way. It sounds like a lot, and it is, but at least Phlegyas cuts some of those numbers down. When it's all over, he will punch the pillar to the right, revealing an opening. Two Throne Demons jump out, so slay them before activating the lever inside of the opening. Good job on the... boss battle? Ehhhh... ============================================================================== Tongue action, yeah! Dante takes his anger out on Phlegyas and controls him just like he would an Asterian Beast. Move down the long, winding path leading to the City of Dis. Phlegyas controls the same as an Asterian Beast, but he is clearly much bigger and much more powerful. Destroy the door leading to the City of Dis. --- City of Dis --- You can smash the giant towers here to receive Souls, but otherwise this is a straightforward mission. Walk forward and destroy the bridge in your way, then continue down the road. Step onto the walkway, where an army of unidentifiable creatures attacks Phlegyas. They're probably Asterian Beasts or something, but it's so hard to tell since they look like ants! Use Y to stomp a few times. You will eventually destroy the walkway from under you. Phlegyas plummets into the darkness, but Dante grabs onto a rope. Rappel to the left and onto the third rope. There is a glowing structure to be destroyed. Once you break it, climb to the top of the rope and pull yourself onto the ledge. Save your game at the Beatrice Statue and walk to the left to find a dial. Turn it to cause the spike hazard along the cliffside to retreat into the wall. A few Greed Minions will interrupt you, so kill them. By now the spikes have moved back into place, so turn the dial once more, drop onto the rope, and swing across before the spikes move back into place. Slide down the pole and onto the wire. Avoid the flames as you shimmy along. Drop onto the rope, then rappel to the rope next to you. Either avoid or kill the Pests flying about. Swing to the left and time your jump so you aren't hit by any flame jets. From here, slide down a series of poles. We're outta here! =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ HERESY [0307] =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ You can score another Relic early on here by talking to Virgil two times. After collecting the RAGE OF FARINATA Relic, bust open the Green and Purple Fountains and open the door. A Throne Demon will guard a lever here in the hallway. The hallway is doused with fire, so an easy way to kill him is to push him into the fire using your scythe or Holy Cross attacks. After, pull the lever to turn off the flames in the hall. A Throne Demon, several Fire Minions, and a Fire Guardian appear at the other end of the hall. Quickly yank the lever to turn on the flames and kill the Throne Demon, then finish off the other guys. Yank the lever once more to turn off the flames, then run down the hall and through the side door. Trek across the Wall of the Damned to another hallway. A Throne Demon on the other end of the hallway runs towards a lever. Dash to his location before the flames get turned on while you're still inside the hall. Kill him along with the Greed Minions, then pull the lever to deactivate the fire. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 22 | | Before proceeding forward, turn back around to the hallway and backtrack to | the two fountains. One of them is a Silver Fountain. | Break the White Fountain here as well, then proceed towards the northern door. Another Throne Demon arrives to foil your plan, so kill him before he can burn you with the flames before you continue through the door ahead. Chat it up with Virgil at the base of the cliff. After he disappears, stand to the right of where he was and double jump. You should see the Right Bumper icon appear at the peak of your jump. Press the Right Bumper to latch onto an unseen pole above, then climb to the top to reach a hidden ledge. There is a White Fountain and a Relic Holder containing CALVACANTI'S BLADE up here. .------------------- | Beatrice Stone 06 | | Also up here, next to the White Fountain and Calvacanti's Blade, is another | Beatrice Stone. | Drop back down to the lower level and slide down the side of the cliff until you reach a horizontal rope. Move all the way across and drop down at the end to find EMPEROR FREDERICK II alongside a Green and Purple Fountain. Up ahead, Dante will encounter a Heretic. The first thing that should be noted is the purple orb above their head. This means that they are immune to Holy attacks, so only use your scythe attacks on Heretics. Most of the time they use projectile lightning bolts to attack, but sometimes they will get up close and personal with their staff. Their teleporting can get annoying, too. After you kill the first Heretic, another one appears alongside some Greed Minions. Heretics can protect other allies as well, so any enemy that is with a Heretic will also carry a purple orb above their head. You shouldn't have to use Holy attacks on the Greed Minions, as you can grab and kill them in one shot. Do so, then finish off the Heretic. Walk forward and climb along the Wall of the Damned. Pause at each gap and wait for the flame jets to cease before jumping across. Save your game at the other end of the wall and open the two White Fountains. Moving along the walkway triggers another battle. The Throne Demon and two Fire Guardians are nothing to worry about. The next wave features another pair of Fire Guardians and a Heretic. You can only damage and kill the Fire Guardians with your Holy Cross attacks, but the presence of a Heretic makes those attacks useless. See how annoying these dudes can get? Deal with the Heretic first, then take out the two Fire Guardians. The path ahead opens, revealing a lever. Pull it to create a chain reaction which raises the statue in the middle of the walkway up in the air. Move underneath the statue and proceed to the next room. Move along the Wall of the Damned to meet up with Virgil. Once he leaves, destroy the Green and Purple Fountains and pass through another door. The room ahead features a wall coated with active flame jets. Grab the stone block on the west side of the room and push it onto the switch. This will cause a small platform in the middle of the north wall to slightly move upward. This doesn't do much good right now, but if we think long and hard about this situation, we can probably think of something grand. Stand on the south end of the block so you are facing the flame-coated wall. As you push the block onto the switch, the platform will shake a lil' bit before rising up. As soon as the block hits the switch, hold down B for a second and release to push the block forward onto the platform. The platform will raise up, allowing you to jump onto it and on top of the block to reach the top of the wall. Ta-da! A Pagan will prevent you from moving forward. These guys look like Heretics, but they have ghastly grey skin and no purple orb above their head. You can use Holy attacks against these guys, but you may want to stick to scythe attacks anyways. Pagans teleport much more often than Heretics and have a few new projectile attacks. All in all, they are about as annoying as Heretics, but for different reasons. Dispatch the Pagan to trigger the appearance of a Pagan and Heretic together. It doesn't matter which one you kill first unless you're a fan of Holy attacks. Either way, finish both off to open up a nearby gate. Pull the lever here to turn off the flame jets on the wall, then go through the open gate. Punish or absolve CAVALCANTE DE CAVALCANTI, then climb up onto the Wall of the Damned. Lava trickles down parts of the wall, but you can safely cross it. Just avoid the fireballs that fall down with it. On the other side, go through the door. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 23 | | Ignore the cauldron and the lever here, then walk to the opposite end of the | room to find a fountain in plain sight. Open it for a Silver Judas Coin. | Also open the Green and Purple Fountains. Next to the Silver Fountain is a stone block. Pull it back towards the lever, then activate it. Lava is tipped into the cauldron, which makes the statue back near the Beatrice Statue rise up even higher. Notice how when the tip of the statue moves into the beam of light, it is destroyed. Hmm. In order to keep the cauldron in place, push the stone block in the nook to the left of the cauldron to keep it tilted in the air and the lava flowing. Time to backtrack! For like, the first time ever! Along the way, you will encounter a new enemy: Fiends. They are basically the same exact thing as Pests, and just as easy. Backtrack all the way to the Beatrice Statue and fight the Pagan here. After, deal with the Heretic and Fire Minions (kill the Heretic first, of course). Save your game for the heck of it, then head to the right side of the statue and open the Green and Purple Fountains. At the end of the Wall of the Damned is another door you can open up. Break open the White Fountain and approach the tall silo. The platform here will move to the right, so stand on it. A platform across the silo will move up and down. Wait for the two platforms to meet (and for the flame jet between them to stop) before jumping to the second platform. As the platform moves up, look to the left towards a small alcove on the other side of a flame jet. Jump inside to find FARINATA. Punish/absolve the Damned Soul, then return to the platform. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 24 | | In the silo, opposite of where Farinata is, is another alcove. From the | platform, jump into the alcove to find the Silver Judas Coin. | Also destroy the Relic Holder for the SEAL OF EPICURUS. Return to the platform once more and ride it up to the next level. Continue moving along the rotating platforms to the top. Turn the lever here to deactivate the flame jets in the silo, then move along the catwalk. Move along the wire to the other side; smash the White Fountain for some Souls and yank the lever to activate another cauldron. This time, the statue is moved into a beam of light completely and is destroyed. Jump to where the statue was and into the opening. Save your game, then proceed through the door. Climb along the Wall of the Damned and destroy the two White Fountains. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 25 | | Ignore the northern path for now and slide down the pole next to the two | White Fountains. At the bottom is a tiny platform containing a Silver | Fountain. | Also destroy the Relic Holder for FREDERICK'S RING. Climb back up and move north. The entire place will begin to fall apart, as stalagmites will rain down from the ceiling. The ground is marked where they will land, but sometimes it is still hard to avoid getting hit. The floor will crumble underneath your feet, so don't slow down at any time. Up ahead, the floor will collapse, but you can still use a grapple point to cross. Continue along the collapsing cave. Try not to dash, because you can easily slide right off the edge of a walkway or platform. At the very end is a Wall of the Damned. This part is difficult, because the platform underneath you will begin to fall. Before you can jump to the wall, a rock will slide down the wall, prevent you from reaching it. As soon as you see the rock ledge slide down the side of the wall, jump, then perform a hesitated double jump to grab onto the Wall of the Damned just as the rock moves past you. It'll take some retries most likely, but there's nothing you can do but perfect your timing. Once you are successful, climb up to the top and sprint through the tunnel to escape. Speak with Virgil a whopping five times to make him shut the hell up and disappear, then save at the Beatrice Statue. Maneuver down the pole and drop down onto the horizontal rope to enter Violence. =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ VIOLENCE [0308] =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Weird spot to enter another Circle of Hell. On a tripwire? Whatever. Move to the right to find two horizontal ropes below. Where to go, where to go... .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 26 | | Drop onto the wire pointing north and stay here. Shimmy north, past the | gargantuan demon statue to reach a ledge. Collect the Silver Judas Coin | here as you drop down. | You will also find more goods here: the SHOE OF NESSUS and another Damned Soul: ATTILA. Return to the rope and shimmy back south. Position yourself above the third rope and drop down, then move along to the right. Drop, then immediately grab onto the grapple point. Swing to the next wire and double jump onto it. Shimmy to the end and fall onto the rope here. Don't worry about trying to rappel towards the chain; we cannot reach it. Slide down to the ledge below you and break the rock to reveal a lever. This will cause the axe-wielding demon statue to rotate. Turn the dial to rotate the statue back to its original position, then let go to unwind it, smashing its axe into the wall above you. Kinda like a weird lumberjack. Crank it up and release it two more times to break the axe, sending it flying into the chain and splitting it in two. Rappel along the rope and onto the grapple point, then jump onto the pole and slide down. --- The Phlegethon: River of Boiling Blood --- Now we're REALLY in Violence! You'll get a nice introduction of the surrounding area, and judging by the name, it doesn't sound or look too pleasant. Talk to Virgil and open up the Green and Purple Fountains close by. Jump up to the upper ledge as an Arch Demon explodes out of nowhere. The Arch Demon is covered in armor just like a Throne Demon, but carries two swords and also has giant wings. He can use these wings to block your attacks and also fly in the air. Once you weaken the enemy enough, you will be able to rip his wings off. Finish him off like you would with a Throne Demon. Jump onto the island and grab onto the pole. Climb up to get a view of the ledge above. A giant furnace will coat the ground in fire from time to time, so only climb up when the flames stop. Run to the other side and use the grapple point to swing to the platform across the way. Two Arch Demons rise up next to Dante. You will have to kill these two foes while dodging the two furnaces here (yes, the platform you're on is also a furnace). When you see the furnace glow, walk over to the grapple point to swing to the opposite furnace and avoid getting scorched. You can also use this method to catch a breather when fighting the Arch Demons. I found the easiest strategy is to get the Arch Demons to move in close, then immediately swing to the opposite furnace. As they start to slowly fly towards you, unleash a barrage of Holy Cross attacks. If you hit them enough, you should knock them out of the air. Assuming that they are flying towards you, you will knock them down between the two furnaces as they fall into the boiling blood below. Insta-kill! Destroy the Green Fountain on the left furnace. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 27 | | Don't climb down the pole; instead, look to the right to find two bronze | markers to the right of the fence. Walk over to the edge to fall down. | Descend downwards onto a blended-in Wall of the Damned. Climb to the bottom | to reach the Silver Fountain. | Climb back up the Wall of the Damned. Hug the left side of the wall and try to move left as you go up. There is a well-hidden split in the path that takes you to the left. Follow it to move underneath the furnace. Continue along the Wall of the Damned to find a platform containing ATTILA'S ARMOR. Return to where you found the Silver Judas Coin and jump onto the metal scale sticking out of the blood pool. As it slowly descends into the blood, the scale ahead of it will rise out, like a balance. Wait for it to stick out of the pool enough before jumping on it. Do the same with the next pair of scales to reach the other end. --- Wood of the Suicides --- Speak with Virgil a handful of times, then save at the Beatrice Statue. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 28 | | Hug the left wall next to Virgil and begin walking back near the scales. | Right next to the closest scale is a high ledge containing a Silver Judas | Coin. Don't miss out on this one! | Up ahead, the game treats you to a cinema showing off what the Wood of the Suicides has to offer. Suicide Trees will create black holes in the ground, then lure unsuspecting victims to their death. Pass under the first one as it is no threat. The second Suicide Tree will create a black hole. If you get too close, Dante will begin to be drawn in. You won't be able to snap out of it no matter how rapidly you press B, so you're pretty much done for. Stay away from the Suicide Tree and instead focus on the glowing red trunk to your right. Attack it to stop the Suicide Tree, then run underneath. You will eventually be sealed in by a gate, so no backtracking for you. You cannot target the trunk of the third Suicide Tree, so stay to the right and squeeze past it. The fourth one can be destroyed, so target the trunk to destroy it. Bust open the Green Fountain and run underneath the tree. Up ahead, Dante will encounter a Heretic and a pack of Fiends. You have two ways to win this fight. You cannot attack the Fiends directly due to the Heretic present. You can either play it out normally and destroy the Heretic first, but the Fiends heckling you from above can make this difficult and annoying. Instead, you can target the two red tree trunks on either side of the arena. Doing so will send a gust of air out of the tree, stunning the Fiends and knocking them to the ground: a level where you can target them directly. Once the enemies have been destroyed, open the Purple Fountain and go down the trail. Smash the White Fountain and proceed to find another Damned Soul. Punish or absolve PIETRO DELLA VIGNA and go forward. Dante will slide down a slippery slope to a new section of the woods. Destroy the three fountains for health, mana, and souls. Grab the block on the side and push it towards the other side of the area. Push it at the base of the slope, then hold B and release to push it upwards. With enough force, it should reach the top of the slope and begin to slowly slide back down. Once it reaches the halfway point of the slope, jump onto the block and double jump to the top of the slope. Save your progress here and attack the trunk here to destroy a Suicide Tree in the distance. Walk forward and drop down the step to end up near the entrance of the Wood of the Suicides. The tree you destroyed was the third Suicide Tree that we simply avoided. Pass underneath the tree and a wall of flames will halt your progress. Waves of Greed Minions and Throne Demons will attack. The catch is that every so often, a patch of Suicide Trees will lower from the ceiling in order to sprout black holes. As soon as you see it descend, attack the glowing trunk to send it back into the ceiling before you are instantly killed. After slaying the enemies and avoiding the Suicide Trees, another cinema will begin. After absolving your mother, Dante earns the Suicide Fruit spell. For whatever reason, the enemies don't stop, so you will have to finish off a few more Greed Minions and Throne Demons, but at least this time the Suicide Tree lingering above doesn't seem to bother you. Once the wall of fire lowers, leap up onto the ledge and pull yourself up. --- Abominable Sands --- Talk to Virgil a few times, break the Green Fountain open, then save at the Beatrice Statue. Walk forward along the road. Even though it looks like it's raining fire, the stuff won't hurt you. Destroy the Purple Fountain and continue. Defeat the Exploding Minions along the path and jump up the pillar leading to a high ledge alongside the road. Here Dante will locate BRUNETTO LATINI. If you'd like an Achievement, make sure to absolve him. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 29 | | Found on the high ledge overlooking the road, right next to the soul of | Brunetto Latini. | Fall back down onto the path and continue ahead. Defeat the Heretic that first appears so you can then target the Fire Minions. After, hack apart the Heretic and Throne Demon that are summoned after. Go forward and jump over to the platform underneath the archway. Here, punish/absolve GUIDO GUERRA. I punished him. What else was there for me to do? His name was Guido! Of course, he didn't have orange skin or a popped collar or a blowout haircut, but I digress. He probably didn't fist pump when Dante plunged his scythe into his face, either. Moving on. Jump back to the path and continue around the bend. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 30 | | Again, it's right on the road along the Abominable Sands. It's on a ledge | near the corner, next to where you encounter Guido Guerra. | Enter the ruins and destroy the Green and Purple Fountains. You will soon be stopped by a cutscene inside. The scene will introduce you to Damned Crusaders. They can block you attacks frequently with their shield, but using heavy scythe blows will destroy their shield and render them useless. More groups of Damned Crusaders will drop down from above. After surviving three waves of baddies, the path opens back up. As the ruins open up and reveal a pool of blood, a few Fiends appear overhead. Defeat them and jump across the blood to a pillar. Double jump up onto a pillar to your right and open the White Fountain. Kill s'more Fiends and jump to the left to reach the top of the first pillar. Slay the Relic Holder for the MEMORY OF ACRE. Return to the second pillar and double jump north to the ground below. Move forward to reach a huge structure. It's basically a giant cart with a platform on top, acting as a roof of sorts. First, destroy the White and Purple Fountains here, then stand at the base of the cart and begin moving it north. As you do this, an endless stream of Greed Minions and Throne Demons will prevent you from moving the cart to the other end of the track. Any time you let go of the lever, the cart will begin moving back down to its original location. This was a pain in the ass, but the best way to get through is to have a full mana bar (you should since you just opened the Purple Fountain) and use Lust Storm. The monsters won't be able to interrupt your progress, so by the time you have used up your entire mana bar with Lust Storm, you should pretty much be at the end of the track. The cart will now stay in place. Ignore the remaining enemies and jump up onto the steps to the left. Leap onto the platform on top of the cart and leap to the high wall. Refill your health at the Green Fountain and continue. Climb across the Wall of the Damned to reach Virgil, a Purple Fountain, and a Beatrice Statue. Once you are ready, descend down the pole for a boss fight. .============================================================================. | BOSS: Francesco | '============================================================================' Brothers-in-laws. They can be such jerks. Aside from his big sword, Francesco also totes around a rather large shield. This prevents you from putting a dent in his health. You can still hurt him, but the damage is minimal. In order to really put a beating on the boss, you must destroy his shield. Francesco follows a pretty strict battle plan, so it is very easy to memorize. He only has two attacks. When you're nearby, Francesco will plunge his sword into the ground, releasing a ring of energy. If you keep your distance, he'll toss his sword at you like a javelin. You cannot block this attack, so evade instead. The sword will either fly off the edge of the arena if you are near the outer perimeter or it will get stuck in the ground. You want the latter to happen. With the sword in the ground, dash over to it and press the Right Bumper to throw the sword back at him. Toss Francesco's sword back at him two times to break his shield. At this time, get in close and unleash your most powerful attacks. Attacks like Soul Stabber and Sacred Quake will deal a nice amount of damage to an unprotected Francesco. Soon after, Francesco will conjure up a new shield and summon some Damned Captains to do his bidding. Damned Captains are a bit stronger than Damned Crusaders. These guys aren't as much of a threat as you'd think, since they are really slow and do not even attack that much. I found the easiest way to kill them is by using a charged- up Divine Force, as it'll kill most in one blow. The only hard part is finding enough free time to charge up for the attack. Continue throwing Francesco's swords back at him. From time to time, an unlucky Damned Captain may get in the way and get hit with the sword as well, but you will want to focus on Francesco. I wouldn't even bother trying to eliminate all of the captains first; just kinda leave 'em there are attack if they get too pesky. I found this to be arguably the easiest fight in the game. Francesco only has two main attacks, is easy to damage, and often lets minions do the dirty work for him. Even if you don't have some of the upgraded abilities that I mentioned beforehand, this fight should still be a breeze. Make sure to finish him off with a button sequence once you have depleted his health bar. ============================================================================== With Francesco's defeat, Dante receives FRANCESCO'S FORGIVENESS. --- Geryon's Back --- The arena you are standing on will begin to plummet. Kinda like the elevator scene back in Lust, you pretty much have to stand around and fight wave after wave of enemies until the game tells you to stop. The first group is a few Damned Crusaders. A Heretic will join the fight sometime in between. After they all perish, a Heretic will join two Arch Demons. Try to kill the Heretic first because they are really annoying with their whole "har har you can't use Holy attacks" gameplan. These should be the last set of enemies, as their death triggers another scene. Next stop: Fraud. =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ FRAUD [0309] =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Access the Green and Purple Fountains and save your game at the Beatrice Statue. Walk forward a few steps for a scene. The Malacoda, from appearance alone, is a flame-covered Guardian Demon. He certainly isn't as easy as one of those fools. Hit it once with a Holy Cross, then begin attacking. Treat him just like a Throne Demon, because he pretty much has the same exact attacks. Once the Malacoda is destroyed, walk forward into the damp cave. Jump onto the ledge next to the door and punish/absolve THAIS THE HARLOT. Open up the door and activate the elevator to be lowered down to the next level. Use the Green and Purple Fountains, then open the door ahead. --- Panderers and Seducers --- Ride the moving platform to the arena ahead. Fraud is basically divided into stupid little challenges because presumably the developers got lazy and decided to devote an entire Circle of Hell to just killing waves of enemies, and we are at that unfortunate stage. Infinite Magic -------------- Kill all enemies using infinite mana Bonus: complete in under 75 seconds You have infinite mana, so go to work. Use a spell to protect yourself, whether that be Lust Storm or Divine Armor, then go to town. The enemies start off with some Guardian Demons and Greed Minions. Don't bother to punish or absolve the minions, since that takes far too much time. In fact, don't even bother using normal attacks against any of the enemies. You have unlimited mana, so spam the hell out of Sins of the Father and Righteous Path. If any of these are leveled up, things will go much more smoothly. This is also a great way to earn the "Superstition" Achievement. Next up are Seductresses of Lust. Juggle them in the air with Sins of the Father and use aerial slashes to quicken the pace. As for the Fiends, you should probably just use aerial grabs to eliminate them with one shot. The final set of enemies is a Pagan and Unbaptized Children. Go after the Pagan first, then focus on the babies with Righteous Path. --- Once the challenge is completed, head across the bridge and climb down the Wall of the Damned to another cave. Use the Green and Purple Fountains, then save your game and head through the door. --- Flatterers --- The grapple point will become concealed for a second or two. Wait for it to open back up, then swing across to the arena. 100 Combo --------- Get a 100-hit combo Bonus: complete in under 30 seconds First off, equip the Coin of Plutus Relic; it'll increase the timing window for active combos. The only enemies here are Greed Minions and Guardian Demons. This is a pitifully easy challenge, as all you have to do is run up to the nearest enemy and use Vile Flurry (X, X, X, X). It is your fastest and weakest scythe combo, so it inflicts the least amount of damage on the enemies while raising the combo as a fast rate. The Guardian Demons should stick around, but you'll be killing Greed Minions left and right. If there is ever a lack of enemies around, quickly pan out and find the nearest foe to hit and maintain your combo streak. If worst comes to worst and there is no one in the vicinity, use a Holy Cross attack to hit someone at a distance and keep the streak alive. --- Cross the drawbridge and activate the elevator. Along the way, the chains will snap and the elevator will fall down the shaft. Jump out once you see the cave opening to avoid plummeting to your death. Again, use the Green/Purple Fountain combo to replenish yourself and save your game before moving on. --- Simonists --- There are two platforms which slide up and down. Wait for the first platform to slide up horizontally and jump on it. Wait for the second platform to move into place and leap onto it before the platform slides out from under you. Hop to the arena. Air Kills --------- Kill 5 enemies while they are airborne Bonus: Complete in under 1 minute Another easy challenge if you ask me. This is probably the easiest to complete the bonus as well. You will face off against Guardian Demons and Damned Captains. If you have the necessary abilities (Divine Force, Diabolic Ascension), you should be good to go. And you should have those abilities, because you can get them really early on. If not, shame on you. Back away from the enemies and use Divine Force to stun them. Next, use Diabolic Ascension (preferably on the weaker Damned Captains). While they are in the air, repeatedly tap X to kill one rather quickly. Repeat this over and over again and you should complete the challenge and the bonus. --- Climb across the horizontal rope and drop onto the pole. Slide down to the second rope and shimmy across. Drop down and punish/absolve TIRESIAS, then proceed onward. Refuel and save before going to the next arena. --- Sorcerers --- The next section is composed of a moving platform and a sliding platform from the level above. Nothin' too complicated. Stay in the Air --------------- Stay in the air for 8 seconds Bonus: Kill 2 enemies while completing challenge in the air Another painfully easy challenge. Well, it's a bit harder if you want the extra Souls, but otherwise you don't have to break a sweat. Basically, double jump in the air and mash the Y button; Dante should float in the air as long as he hits an enemy on the ground every few swings. If you want the bonus, you will have to significantly weaken the enemies before taking them into the air. You only fight Guardian Demons here, so use Divine Force about two times. Gather the enemies together in a tight circle, then jump and begin hitting Y. It's tough because you have to simultaneously attack two of the enemies. --- Run over to the elevator and destroy the glowing gear holding it in place. Like earlier, it'll drop without any control, so you have to time your escape as you dive into the cave entrance before your death. Save and move on. --- Politicians --- Jump onto the bridge and turn the dial so that the bridge now faces the arena. Tilt it a bit farther, then step away from the dial. As the bridge rotates back into place, run across and double jump onto the arena. Protect Innocent ---------------- Destroy all enemies and protect the human Bonus: Keep all innocents alive This is actually a fairly difficult mission. It's insanely tough if you want to complete the bonus as well. The arena, a square, is divided into two halves. Two humans stand still on the southwest and southeast corners of the arena. Exploding Minions will spawn on the northwest and northeast corners of the arena. For the most part, the enemies will only attack the humans directly below them. You have two ways to kill the Exploding Minions and protect the innocent humans: your grab attack or your Holy Cross. For added effect, equip Lord's Blessing and Medusa's Call to increase your Holy and projectile attacks. As things start off, you can get away with using grab attacks. Grab an Exploding Minion and toss him back to the starting point. For the most part, try to stay as close to the center as possible. If you stay on one side and things start to get crazy on the other, you'll have to run all the way across and by then the poor guy will be toast. Your scythe has a long range for grabbing so you don't have to be super close to the enemy. Exploding Minions spawn more frequently, and can reach up to two at a time on each side. At this point, start using Holy Cross attacks exclusively, because grabbing and tossing one enemy takes far too much time. Using Holy Barrage or Holy Devastation should kill an Exploding Minion in one go, and if two are next to each other both will most likely be taken out. Try not to let any enemy get too close. The halfway mark is the limit, because any closer and the ensuing explosion will reach the human. One thing is for certain: if one human is killed in the challenge, it becomes much easier. Now you only have to worry about one human, and the Exploding Minions on the opposite side have nowhere to go: they literally walk south and explode. --- Cross the series of wires to the next level and save your progress. --- Hypocrites --- There is another grapple point that you must use to cross the gap. Wait for it to appear, then swing across. No Magic -------- Kill all enemies without using mana Bonus: Complete in under 1 minute Personally, this challenge was a cinch for me because I seldom use magic. Unequip any magic-related Relics and equip Shoe of Nessus, Death Scythe, and any other Relics that would aid you in attacking foes directly. The bonus is impossible to complete here. Like, literally impossible. Defeat the waves of Damned Crusaders and the Throne Demon first. Next, take on a series of Damned Captains and a Heretic. Deal with the Heretic first, then attack the captains using Divine Force. After only a few enemies remain, an Asterian Beast lowers the drawbridge itself and storms onto the arena. Challenge cancelled! The game tells you to escape, but you really can't. All you can do is take on the remaining enemies and the Asterian Beast. We have dealt with many Asterian Beasts up to this point, so you know how to handle them. Yawn. --- As soon as you gain control of the beast, a statue high above falls on top of it. Tap B over and over again to prevent getting crushed. The statue crumbles and Dante jumps onto a piece. As the game enters a slo-mo sequence, press the Right Bumper when it appears onscreen to swing to a grapple point. Dante will drop down the elevator shaft and onto a wire. Shimmy over and save your game before moving to the next challenge. --- Thieves --- Jump across the two moving platforms to the challenge arena. Losing Health ------------- Kill all enemies before health depletes Bonus: Complete in under 1 minute Yeah, the challenge sounds redundant, but the catch is that your health is slowly being sapped away during the challenge. Honestly, I don't know how anyone can complete most of these dumbass bonuses. I managed to complete three out of 10, and this one I only managed to defeat the first wave of enemies in an entire minute. So obviously I have no strategy for completing the bonus. As for the challenge alone, Divine Armor is your friend. This spell slowly regenerates Dante's health, so it kinda negates the whole "sapping health" part of the challenge. The first set of enemies are easy, since it's a few Fiends and Greed Minions. Next, defeat the Seductresses of Lust and Guardian Demons. Lastly, you will have to do battle against some Damned Crusaders and a Glutton. If you are having trouble during this challenge, I suggest using Divine Armor (or Lust Storm if you don't have it) and equipping the Eye of Alighiero and Francesco's Forgiveness Relics. --- Walk across the drawbridge and ignore the elevator. Instead, use the Wall of the Damned as your mode of transportation. Refill your health and mana and save your game. We're almost done with this lame-ass Circle of Hell. --- Evil Counselors --- Jump onto the moving platform. Make sure to leap over the burning rope like a circus animal before crossing to the other side. Boy, this game always loves giving us some variety. No Block -------- Kill all enemies while unable to block Bonus: Complete in under 1 minute Get used to the Right Analog Stick, because you'll be evading everything left and right instead of blocking and countering. The first two enemies are Hoarder-Wasters, and they are basically the reason why you didn't receive the bonus if you did not get it. The strategy is to group both together and attack them at the same time, because their tornado attack leaves them invulnerable for a good ten seconds. At least when one dies, you can focus on other enemies if the Hoarder-Waster remaining is spinning around like a top. Otherwise, focus on these two punks before anyone else. The only other foes here are two Temptresses of Lust and a few Greed Minions. Even though you cannot block, this challenge is still easy because the game is giving you really weak enemies to combat against. --- At the end of the drawbridge, slide down the pole and cross the horizontal rope. Drop down at the end to cling to the Wall of the Damned, then use this to reach the cave opening. Do your stuff, then pry open the door. Geez, I'm getting tired of sounding like a broken record... --- Sowers of Discord --- Another one of those rotating bridges, except there's a burning piece of rope along the side! Use the dial to rotate it into place, then run across and double jump to the arena. Single Combo ------------ Kill all enemies without resetting the Hit Counter Bonus: Complete in under 1 minute This challenge is actually really annoying, because if at any time your combo ends, you automatically fail. At least there are only two sets of enemies you have to fight. Definitely equip Coin of Plutus and start attacking the Greed Minions that first appear. A Guardian Demon appears with them. Coin of Plutus really helps even if it's at Level 1, because even if you get hurt your Hit Counter still stays in tact for a second or two. A neat way to keep your Hit Counter high when there aren't many bad guys around is to use Sins of the Father. The second wave is where things get annoying. The Throne Demon really screws things up, because he's the only enemy in this challenge that can actually block Dante's attacks. As you defeat the Unbaptized Children around you, use Holy Cross attacks to soften him up, then dash over and attack with your scythe. The Throne Demon is really the only reason why this challenge is difficult. Getting hit by him usually doesn't matter, but if you are knocked down by his charged swing or ram attack, you can consider yourself finished. Definitely use Sins of the Father on him and juggle him in the air. When the Throne Demon lands back on the ground, have no mercy and hack away at his body before he can get up. --- Again, cross the bridge and use the elevator. It's a smooth and safe ride, so don't expect it to plummet down the hole. You will find MYRRHA down here, so punish/absolve her. Save your game up ahead and head to the final challenge. --- Falsifiers --- Another moving platform. As you cross the pit, hop across the two burning ropes to the arena. Endurance Test -------------- Kill all enemies Bonus: Complete in under 5 minutes If the bonus alone is to win in under five minutes, you know that this'll take a while. Unless you are aiming for the bonus, this challenge isn't as bad as one would assume. Just play it safe and take your time, using magic such as Divine Armor and Lust Storm to play a little defense from time to time. Of course, the challenge starts off with some fodder: Greed Minions and Guardian Demons. After, two Temptresses of Lust will attack. They aren't too bad, especially since we've been dealing with their stronger cousins for most of the game. A Pagan will then arrive, accompanied by a group of Unbaptized Children. Don't worry about grab attacks on the babies, since that wastes too much time. Use moves like Vile Tornado to scatter the babies, then use heavy attacks on the Pagan. A Throne Demon appears, but he can be taken out exclusively by using the Exploding Minions against him. Do that, then use the remaining Explosive Minions on the Glutton afterwards. Use your Holy Cross on the Pests here. The next wave consists of Damned Crusaders and a Hoarder-Waster. Focus on the Hoarder-Waster first, then use Divine Force on the Damned Crusaders. Another Glutton arrives with some Greed Minions. Don't worry about using executions to punish or absolve enemies; just hack 'em apart to save time. If you already failed in the bonus, then you might as well execute them. I mean, you'll be getting some Souls, so it's better than none. Next up are some Seductresses of Lust and an Arch Demon. Deal with the two lovely ladies before targeting the demon. Nope, we're still not done! Kill as many Fire Minions as you can before the Heretic drops in. Make the Heretic your first priority, then take care of the stragglers. A handful of Fire Guardians and Pests are next. After them are two Guardian Demons. They should be easy. The final enemy is a Malacoda: extinguish his flames with Holy Barrage and Divine Force, then finish him off. --- Success! Proceed across the bridge for a cutscene. You may have saved Beatrice from eternal damnation, but we aren't done here just yet. Go around the bend to the left and speak with Virgil. Open the Green and Purple Fountains here. Punish or absolve FRA ALBERIGO and then save your game. Quite the change of scenery here. Slide down the two poles and shimmy to the right. Drop onto the icy floor and begin killing the Pests here. The giant head in the background will begin blowing gusts of wind every few moments. You can get pushed right off the edge if you aren't careful, so begin jumping back to the north end of the platform when you see the wind blow. After, you will have to slay two Arch Demons on this platform. There are a few tricky parts to this battle, specifically when you can cut off their wings or punish/absolve them. Only make sure to do these right after the wind has ceased. If you start to perform the sequence while the wind is blowing, you'll get swept off the edge. After killing both, grapple points will appear. Swing across onto the rope. Begin swinging across the rope and destroy the patch of icicles blocking your way. Jump to the pole on the other end and climb to the top to find MORDRED. After punishing/absolving him, return to the pole and slide down into the final Circle of Hell. Hoo boy, you know who's down here! =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ TREACHERY [0310] =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Talk to Virgil one final time at the entrance to Treachery. The ice bridge ahead is very unstable and can break at any moment. You have to find the right areas to walk across, or you will slip right through the weak ice. The Ice Bridge S - start -------------- F - finish # - stable areas ____ _ _____ _____ ___/ `.____ / | __,--' ###\__________,---' `.__ ___,-'###### `._| '-._|## ##### ######## `-----.___ ### #### ####### ## ## ### ## F ### ####### ## ## ######## #### ####### S #### #### #### ## ## ##### ## _ ##### __,------.__ ######## ##### ###### ## `-----' `._ _ ######## ,-' \ ______| `-._ ___ ,-' |_ __| | _| | _,--' |__/ |__,---' '--.___/ This is a really crude ASCII map of the ice bridge, so it might not help as much as I would want it to. Basically the ice bridge is as shown above, but you can only walk on the stable areas marked on the map. If you tread anywhere unsafe, the ground will begin to rumble. If this happens, immediately try to find stable ground and continue along before it crumbles from underneath you. Dante will move incredibly slow as you trek across the ice bridge, which may be for the best. Once you make it across, step to the left of the archway to encounter the final Damned Soul: COUNT UGOLINO. Do whatever you'd like to him, then bust open the Green and Purple Fountains before saving. Walk through the arch and destroy the chain to send Dante down to the pit below. --- Lake Cocytus --- Ready for the final boss battle? There's certainly no turning back now. .============================================================================. | BOSS: Lucifer | '============================================================================' --- Part 1 --- I should probably mention the recommended Relics used during this boss fight. Assuming you have all four slots open, go with Eye of Alighiero, Francesco's Forgiveness, Tristan's Desire and Lord's Blessing. After Part 1, switch Lord's Blessing with Death Scythe. You can't do much to damage Lucifer here. For now, all you can do is dodge his extremely quick fist slam attacks. He moves a lot quicker than someone like Phlegyas, so you must react quickly to avoid the shockwaves that emanate from his fists. After doing this for a little bit, a beam of light will shine down in the center of the pentagram on the floor. Press the Right Trigger to be shot up towards Lucifer's face, then use light scythe combos to hack away at his face. Once Lucifer falls backwards, use your Holy Cross to attack his torso. After, the boss will get a little ticked off. He sends a gust of wind that pushes you to the edge of the arena, then summons to raging tornados. If you are caught inside one, press A to reduce the amount of damage done. From now on, Lucifer will begin to use fist slams in quick succession. He will often slam one fist down, then the other, then finish off with a double fist slam. From now on, stay on one side of the arena. That way you only have to avoid one of the boss's fists. Also perform a single jump to avoid the shockwave, because a double jump would screw up the timing and you'd land on the ground just as he unleashes his double fist slam. After a while, another beam of light will appear. Run over and press the Right Trigger, then slash the boss's face to stun him. Attack his torso with your Holy Cross. The battle will continue to repeat itself until you deplete Lucifer's health bar. --- Part 2 --- The real Lucifer climbs out of the huge guy and fights Dante on the ground, as you are given an automatic health and mana refill. Also, if you die here, you will start from Part 2. As if we haven't used this comparison enough throughout the game, Lucifer greatly resembles a Guardian Demon. Needless to say, we won't be carving through this guy as easily as we would a Guardian Demon. Lucifer often uses a three-hit sword combo. The third hit is unblockable: try to counter the first two swings, but if you fail then roll out of the way of the third. Like in the battle with Alighiero, it's key to perfect your countering skills with Repayment and Retribution. Some of the best attacks to use are Death's Pillar and Divine Power. Also, Sacred Quake is another strong attack to use against Lucifer. Lucifer's long-range attack is easy to avoid. He slices the ground: tiny sparks travel along the ground towards Dante before they eventually explode. They do not go far, so you can back away from them before they disappear. As for right now, he only has two attacks. One thing you want to note is that if you spam your Holy Cross too much, Lucifer will learn to counterattack it. Every so often, you will take a chunk out of the boss's health bar, resulting in you receiving some health and mana. Lucifer will also float in the air and release a shockwave attack. Double jump over it, then resume attacking. Lucifer eventually starts to teleport around the ring. He usually does it to get behind you and then hurls a couple fireballs at you. These are unblockable, and if you get hit by one you are likely to get hit by the others, resulting in about half of your health bar disappearing. Make sure to roll out of the way of the four to five fireballs. After dealing around a quarter of his health, the boss will teleport, then use a rapid-fire shockwave slam. This time, only use single jumps to avoid them as opposed to double jumps. Also, try to run away from Lucifer because the shockwaves don't travel the entire distance of the arena. As the battle starts winding down, don't be afraid to use magic to help yourself out. Lust Storm and Divine Armor are great shields, and Righteous Path can deal quite a bit if leveled up. Plus, don't forget about using Redemption Mode! It's a good deal-breaker, especially if you have purchased any Redemption Cells. After you deplete enough of Lucifer's health bar, the next phase will begin. You won't have to take out the entire health bar: reducing him to around a quarter health will do the trick. --- Part 3 --- The final phase is really short, because you only have to take out a quarter of the boss's health. Lucifer will permanently float high in the air, making it harder to attack him than before. Lucifer's range of attacks doesn't increase by much. He only uses long-range projectile attacks, not many of which are blockable. I wouldn't try to block any of them anyways; just evade as he shoots them. The Right Bumper often appears at the top of the screen. By pressing it, Dante will grab Lucifer and yank himself up to the boss. At this time, use light scythe attacks to slowly damage Lucifer before falling back to the ground. Keep repeating this process: the button prompt appears as Lucifer uses any projectile attack, so it's pretty frequent. Holy Cross attacks are out of the picture because like Heretics, Lucifer is immune to them in this stage of the fight. Also, a good idea would be to use Sins of the Father to continuously damage Lucifer even without using up-close scythe attacks. Once you deplete Lucifer's health bar, the ending button sequence will begin. He rises in the air and fires a laser beam to the ground. The edges of the pentagram float up in the air as grapple points appear on them. Use these grapple points to grapple around the edges of the pentagram, then up to Lucifer himself. After this, follow the commands onscreen to win the fight. ============================================================================== The ending cinema is pretty sweet. The game will end afterwards, in which you will unlock a bunch of cool stuff. Resurrection Mode allows you to play through the game with your current stats and abilities. Unfortunately, your Silver Judas Coins reset, so you cannot simply replay through the game if you missed a few coins; you'll have to collect them all over again. ______________________________________________________________________________ [4] ABILITIES [0400] ______________________________________________________________________________ Naturally, abilities are unique moves that can be taught to Dante at the price of White Souls. If you noticed on the upgrade section of the menu, you have both Unholy and Holy abilities. In order to be given access to new abilities, you must level up. Once you reach a level, you can purchase abilities corresponding to that level. So if you are Level 2, then you will be able to access abilities on the row marked "2" on the ability tree, and can buy them assuming that you have bought the prerequisite abilities on the below levels. =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ UNHOLY ABILITIES [0401] =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Level Level ----- ----- .---. .---. 7 | 33| | 34| 7 '---' '---' | | .---. .---. 6 | 31| | 32| 6 '---' '---' .---. .---. .---. 5 | 28| | 29| | 30| 5 '---' '---' '---' | .---. .---. .---. 4 | 25| | 26| | 27| 4 '---' '---' '---' | .---. .---. .---. .---. .---. .---. 3 | 19| | 20| | 21|---| 22| | 23| | 24| 3 '---' '---' '---' '---' '---' '---' | | | | .---. .---. .---. .---. .---. .---. 2 | 13| | 14| | 15| | 16| | 17| | 18| 2 '---' '---' '---' '---' '---' '---' | | | .---. .---. .---. .---. .---. 1 | 8 | | 9 | | 10| | 11| | 12| 1 '---' '---' '---' '---' '---' | | | | .---. | .---. .---. .---. 0 | 4 | | | 5 |---| 6 | | 7 | 0 '---' | '---' '---' '---' | | | .---. .---. .---. | 1 | | 2 | | 3 | '---' '---' '---' .============================================================================. | Default | '============================================================================' --- 1. If you come across one, you are given the choice to punish or absolve them like common enemies. --- Pontius Pilate --- Found: Shores of Acheron "Judge at the trial of Jesus, Pontius Pilate deceived the Pharisees into allowing Jesus to die. His cowardice contributed to the suffering of one for the sins of many, and now he bears the weight of all in Limbo." Technically, Pontius Pilate is not found in Limbo. He is found on the Shores of Acheron, before boarding Charon. You can spot him next to the door leading to the wire that takes you to Charon. Pretty much impossible to miss. --- Orpheus --- Found: Shores of Acheron "Greek poet and musician, Orpheus failed to deliver his beloved from the underworld. Denounced for attempting to impede the fulfillment of God's will, he suffers in the dark abyss of woe." Another one that is impossible to miss. Orpheus is found inside Charon. After moving the metal crate into place on the north end of the room, use it to reach the ledge leading to the ship's deck. Orpheus is found here on this ledge. --- Electra --- Found: Limbo "Argive princess who killed her mother to avenge her father's wrongful death. She serves her punishment, which is to finally know about the wrath of the God of which she was ignorant while she was alive." In the hallway past Charon's head, you will find Virgil. Enter the door next to Virgil as opposed to continuing down the hall; Electra is found through the door on a walkway outside. --- Francesca da Polenta --- Found: Limbo "Love was her undoing, after she fell for her old and deformed husband's younger brother Paolo. When Francesca's husband discovered their adultery, he had the young lovers killed." Located just before the entrance to Lust. As you descend down into Lust, you will eventually find her. --- Paolo Malatesta --- Found: Lust "The object of Francesca's affection, Paolo Malatesta was killed by her side. Climb down the Wall of the Damned off of the elevator's right side to reach Paolo. --- Semiramis --- Found: Lust "Semiramis was an Assyrian queen whose carnal cravings knew no bounds. So consumed by crude and bodily pleasures was she that even the most unspeakable acts of lust such as incest were made law under her rule." Pretty hard to miss since you have to pass her to reach the boss. --- Ciacco --- Found: Gluttony "Anonymous citizen of Florence, Ciacco spent his life gorging his appetites and now spends eternity in the muddy depths of the third Circle of Hell." Located near the start of Gluttony, down in the cave just past the Gorger Worm room. Kill the four Gorger Worms to open up the cavern, then proceed through. Ciacco is opposite a Beatrice Statue, kneeling down in a dark corner of the room. --- Clodia --- Found: Gluttony "A soul filled with grime and smut. This notorious gambler, seducer and drunkard of Rome, left a repulsive trail of rot in her wake." Found just past Ciacco, actually. Called the Greediest Woman in all of Rome, she pursued any opportunity to seize power, by exploiting her high profile husbands." After passing the room containing the first golden statue of Plutus. Just past here, before an elevator, is Fulvia. --- Boudica --- Found: Anger "After she was flogged and her children raped, the Vengeful Queen of the Iceni Tribe tried to set fire to the city of Rome in a bloody revolt. Now she suffers the eternal fire of Anger." Inside the cave where you first encounter Fire Guardians. After defeating all foes and opening the two exits, use Holy Cross attacks to destroy the wooden gate across the moat to reach Boudica. --- Hecuba --- Found: Anger "Queen of Troy who watched as her city fell in battle. Her hapless wretched soul lies in the darkness of hell, besieged by the condemned who flog her at every turn." At the base of the tower where you must use the gear lever to rise to the top. The same one with the flame jets and all that crazy whatnot. --- Filippo Argenti --- Found: Anger "Angry politician who opposed Dante's return to Florence. Their families were bitter rivals, and Argenti stole from Dante's family after he left Florence." Lying next to the Beatrice Statue at the entrance to the Styx Marsh. --- Emperor Frederick II --- Found: Heresy "The King of Romans with a never-ending thirst for war, Emperor Frederick II's soul dwells in the Circle of Heresy. He resides with the other heretics among their fiery tombs." Leaning up against a Wall of the Damned, just outside the room where you first encounter a Pagan. Pretty hard to miss. --- Farinata --- Found: Heresy "Farinata was a Tuscan aristocrat and military leader who believed that the soul dies with the body, denying life after death. Condemned as a heretic for those beliefs, his body was exhumed and burned." Found inside the silo with the moving platforms. When you see the alcove in reach, double jump to it to find Farinata. --- Attila --- Found: Violence "Attila is a most feared enemy and emperor of the Huns. He is trapped in Violence with others who desired that their souls be drenched in the blood of man. His bloodlust and cruelty were so great that he was called the 'Scourge of the Earth'." As soon as you enter Violence, move along the wire and drop down onto the one below you. Stay on this wire and shimmy north, past the axe-wielding statue. Drop down onto the ledge at the end of the rope to find Attila. --- Pietro della Vigna --- Found: Violence "Chancellor to Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, Pietro della Vigna failed to defend the honor of his master. Imprisoned and ruined, he took his own life." Inside the Wood of the Suicides. He's sitting right on the side of the path, just before the area with the slippery slopes. Hard to miss. --- Fra Alberigo --- Found: Fraud "Traitor to not only his country but to his family as well, Alberigo committed the darkest of treacherous acts, murdering his own son for the sake of revenge." One of them contains the Relic. --- Eye of Alighiero --- Found: Greed Requires: Holy Level 3 Dante is able to absorb a certain amount of damage when attacked. Leveling up this Relic increases the damage Dante can absorb. Level 1: 30% Level 2: 60% Level 3: 90% In the same chamber where you fought Alighiero. Proceed towards the Beatrice Statue. To the left is a Green Fountain and a ledge you can reach. It is found on top of the ledge. --- Medusa's Call --- Found: Anger Requires: Holy Level 5 Dante's ranged attack and projectile damage is increased. Level 1: 10% Level 2: 15% Level 3: 20% Speak with Virgil inside the swamp (closer towards the start of the level) two times to receive the Relic. --- Guiding Flame --- Found: Anger Requires: Holy Level 5 Dante is immune to excrement attacks such as the Glutton's ranged attacks. After climbing the tower using the gear lever, jump onto the platforms to the right of Virgil to locate it. --- Rage of Farinata --- Found: Heresy Requires: - All fountains are immediately broken upon use. Talk to Virgil twice at the entrance of Heresy. --- Calvacanti's Blade --- Found: Heresy Requires: - Turns evade into an attack, knocking enemies back and dealing a small amount of damage. Found near where you meet with Virgil for a second time. Stand to the right of Virgil, hugging the wall, and double jump. You should grab onto a hidden pole. Level 1: 10% Level 2: 15% Level 3: 20% Near the end of Heresy. Right before you enter the cave that begins to crumble apart, slide down the pole to find a small platform below. Here you will find the Relic. --- Shoe of Nessus --- Found: Violence Requires: Unholy Level 5 All of Dante's Light Scythe attacks can no longer be evaded by enemies. As soon as you enter Violence, shimmy across the horizontal rope. Drop down on the one below and shimmy north, past the giant axe-wielding demon statue. Once you've reached the other side, drop onto the ledge and kill the Relic Holder. --- Attila's Armor --- Found: Violence Requires: - Player attacks will not be interrupted if an enemy blocks them. After defeating the two Arch Demons on top of the furnace. Once on the left furnace, hug the left side of it to the right of the pole to find a hidden Wall of the Damned. As you climb down, stay to the left and you should enter a tiny compartment underneath the furnace. Probably the hardest Relic to find. --- Memory of Acre --- Found: Violence Requires: Holy Level 5 Dante can no longer be interrupted while executing Cross attacks. There are two pillars just past the ruins where you encounter the Damned Crusaders. Jump on the one to the left, then leap to the top of the right one. From here, you can leap back to the top of the pillar on the left. Do so, then kill the Relic Holder for your reward. --- Francesco's Forgiveness --- Found: Violence Requires: Holy Level 5 Dante is protected from all enemy damage. Level 1: 5% Level 2: 10% Level 3: 15% Obtained after defeating Francesco. ______________________________________________________________________________ [8] SILVER JUDAS COINS [0800] ______________________________________________________________________________ There are 30 Silver Judas Coins strewn throughout the game. Collect five to earn 3,000 Souls. Having a keen eye and a sense of exploration certainly pays off in the long run. .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 01 | | Location: Florence, Italy | | After talking with Virgil and receiving the relic, jump up onto the alcove | behind him to find another fountain. This is a Silver Fountain, and breaking | it will yield a Silver Judas Coin. Collect these rare coins to earn Souls! | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 02 | | Location: Shores of Acheron | | Before entering the door, return to the lever (the floor lowers when you are | away from the lever) and continue raising the floor up, past the door. At | the very top is an alcove with a Silver Fountain on the left. Step away from | the lever and quickly double jump to the fountain and break it for the coin. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 03 | | Location: Shores of Acheron | | Look behind the stone sculpture to find the Silver Fountain; break it open | to receive the Silver Judas Coin. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 04 | | Location: Shores of Acheron | | With the wooden floor as far south as it can and the metal crate now on the | right side of the room, pull the crate to the left side. Wedge it against | the left wall and the corner of the wooden platform and jump on top to reach | a well-hidden alcove containing a Silver Fountain. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 05 | | Location: Limbo | | Hug the left wall just before Charon's head to sneak out onto a balcony. | You will find the Silver Fountain here, usually joined by a Guardian Demon. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 06 | | Location: Limbo | | On your descent into Lust, climb up the second rope to locate a Silver | Fountain at the very top. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 07 | | Location: Lust | | Head over to the fourth stop. Again, search the left side of the stop to | find another Wall of the Damned. Climb across to reach a Silver Fountain | containing another Silver Judas Coin. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 08 | | Location: Lust | | With the elevator slightly raised and the ceiling still closed off, jump to | the ledge on the far left side of the elevator to find another coin. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 09 | | Location: Lust | | To the left of the Beatrice Statue is a gap that can be crossed in order to | reach another Silver Fountain. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 10 | | Location: Gluttony | | In the entrance to Gluttony. This fountain is in plain view, just past the | first Gorger Worm. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 11 | | Location: Gluttony | | At the top of the portal room. Follow the instructions in the walkthrough to | find out how to reach it. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 12 | | Location: Gluttony | | After exiting the portal room, slide down onto the rope and swing over to | the second pole. Instead of sliding down, climb up to find the coin. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 13 | | Location: Gluttony | | Inside what I have now dubbed "Generic Cave". What? It just looks like a | normal-ass cave! Certainly something you'd see in real life as opposed to | Hell. Anyways, it's on a high ledge above the Green and Purple Fountains. To | reach it, jump onto the ledge across from the two fountains, then double | jump to the other side to reach the Silver Fountain. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 14 | | Location: Greed | | After clearing the room of Hoarder-Wasters, grab onto the edge of the alcove | and pull yourself up to reach the Silver Fountain. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 15 | | Location: Greed | | After killing the foes in the basement, open the Silver Fountain on the | right-hand side of the area. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 16 | | Location: Greed | | At the fork, climb to the right. You'll notice that the wall angles down, | leading into a small enclosed area. Descend to the ground to find the Silver | Judas Coin. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 17 | | Location: Greed | | Found on the path that opens up after slaying the Throne Demon. Pretty hard | to miss if you ask me. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 18 | | Location: Greed | | Use the pillar to send a fireball at the statue on the right. It lowers a | spire into the lava, creating a stepping stone to the room above. Jump onto | it and into the room to find the coin. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 19 | | Location: Anger | | Move the block slightly south and lean it up against the vines covering the | right wall. Next, use the block as a stepping stone to reach the ledge high | above. From here, break the Silver Fountain to retrieve the coin. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 20 | | Location: Anger | | At the top of the rising circular platform is a Silver Fountain, just at the | mouth of the tunnel entrance. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 21 | | Location: Anger | | At the top of the tower, on a platform to the right of Virgil. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 22 | | Location: Heresy | | Before proceeding forward, turn back around to the hallway and backtrack to | the two fountains. One of them is a Silver Fountain. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 23 | | Location: Heresy | | Ignore the cauldron and the lever here, then walk to the opposite end of the | room to find a fountain in plain sight. Open it for a Silver Judas Coin. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 24 | | Location: Heresy | | In the silo, opposite of where Farinata is, is another alcove. From the | platform, jump into the alcove to find the Silver Judas Coin. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 25 | | Location: Heresy | | Ignore the northern path for now and slide down the pole next to the two | White Fountains. At the bottom is a tiny platform containing a Silver | Fountain. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 26 | | Location: Violence | | Drop onto the wire pointing north and stay here. Shimmy north, past the | gargantuan demon statue to reach a ledge. Collect the Silver Judas Coin | here as you drop down. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 27 | | Location: Violence | | Don't climb down the pole; instead, look to the right to find two bronze | markers to the right of the fence. Walk over to the edge to fall down. | Descend downwards onto a blended-in Wall of the Damned. Climb to the bottom | to reach the Silver Fountain. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 28 | | Location: Violence | | Hug the left wall next to Virgil and begin walking back near the scales. | Right next to the closest scale is a high ledge containing a Silver Judas | Coin. Don't miss out on this one! | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 29 | | Location: Violence | | Found on the high ledge overlooking the road, right next to the soul of | Brunetto Latini. | .---------------------- | Silver Judas Coin 30 | | Location: Violence | | Again, it's right on the road along the Abominable Sands. It's on a ledge | near the corner, next to where you encounter Guido Guerra. | ______________________________________________________________________________ [9] BEATRICE STONES [0900] ______________________________________________________________________________ There are six Beatrice Stones in all, but you are only able to collect a total of three. Once you have found three Beatrice Stones, you are given the choice to skip the absolution minigame in regards to Damned Souls. The remaining three not found are replaced with White Fountains. .------------------- | Beatrice Stone 01 | | Location: Limbo | | Pass by where Charon's head was stuck to reach a dead end with a rare Gold | Fountain; break it open to find the first Beatrice Stone. Finding all three | Beatrice Stones allows you to automatically absolve damned souls without | having to go through that little minigame. | .------------------- | Beatrice Stone 02 | | Location: Lust | | Descend down the Wall of the Damned between the third and fourth stops of | the track to find the Beatrice Stone. | .------------------- | Beatrice Stone 03 | | Location: Gluttony | | In the southeast corner of the portal room. Follow the instructions in the | walkthrough to find out how to reach it. | .------------------- | Beatrice Stone 04 | | Location: Gluttony | | If you were wondering, there is a ledge across from the Silver Judas Coin, | but is blocked by a rock arch. It contains a Beatrice Stone, but it's pretty | hard to reach. To do so, return to the first ledge and stay on the far north | end. Perform a delayed double jump to reach it. It's really hard to get and | you may want to skip it if you just want to get the stone somewhere else. | Totally your choice. | .------------------- | Beatrice Stone 05 | | Location: Anger | | After shimmying across the rope and before dropping onto the circular disc | in the water, open the fountain to find a Beatrice Stone. Again, if you | already have three, then this will be a basic White Fountain. | .------------------- | Beatrice Stone 06 | | Location: Heresy | | Also up here, next to the White Fountain and Calvacanti's Blade, is another | Beatrice Stone. | ______________________________________________________________________________ [10] UNLOCKABLES [1000] BESTIARY [1200] ______________________________________________________________________________ =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ ENEMIES [1201] =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ When I state the location, I am only referring to where you first encounter the enemy. Most foes are encountered in multiple Circles of Hell. --- Undead Minion --- Found: Surface Threat Level: Very Low "Once living humans, these wretched souls now reside in the depths of Hell. A great power has commanded them to leave the abyss for the Earth's surface." Arguably the easiest enemies Dante will encounter in the game. They are so pathetic, you don't even find these guys in Hell! You only encounter Undead Minions in Florence, just after discovering Beatrice's body. They don't do much in terms of attacking, so use light scythe combos. --- Pest --- Found: Surface Threat Level: Very Low "Swarms of these foul beasts can be found throughout the nine circles, wreaking havoc and destruction. In greater numbers, they are even capable of blotting out the sky." These flying bats are found on the surface and, if I'm not mistaken, every Circle of Hell. You'll be dealing with these foes in moderate-to-large groups, as they tend to attack in numbers. Pests fly in the air and shoot fireballs at you, but the easiest way to kill them is with your scythe's grab attack (it's a one-hit kill). Otherwise, stick to your Holy Cross if they are out of reach. --- Fire Minion --- Found: Surface Threat Level: Low "These fiends are forged from the sweltering fire of the middle circles. Only the light of the cross can snuff out their infernal armor." You see these foes a few times on the Surface, but then not until the later circles. Fire Minions are coated from head to toe in flames, and cannot be hurt by Dante's scythe. You must first put out their fire with a Holy Cross attack. Once they are stunned, hit their charred body with a few light scythe attacks to destroy them. --- Asterian Beast --- Found: Surface Threat Level: Very High "Tamed long ago by the fallen, these mindless creatures serve as beasts of burden. Steered by their masters, they labor away, ensuring everlasting pain and suffering throughout the Inferno." Asterian Beasts serve as mini-bosses of sorts, since you only face off against a handful of them throughout the game. They are controlled by Beast Tamers, and in order to defeat an Asterian Beast you must first kill their master. The Asterian Beast will stomp on you and use fist slams to squash Dante like a tiny bug. Stay near its legs and weave between them while you hack at the monster's tree trunk-like shins. They are slow, lumbering beasts, so if you focus on evading the monster's attacks you should be relatively safe. After dealing enough damage to the Asterian Beast, follow the button prompt that shows up to slay the Beast Tamer. Now you can take over the reigns and control the Asterian Beast! Press X to use a fist slam, Y to stomp, and B to breathe fire. You can also use the Right Trigger to grab enemies and rip them apart! Asterian Beasts are usually needed to perform tasks, like busting down walls or opening large doors, so their use is limited. --- Beast Tamer --- Found: Surface Threat Level: Very High "These demons rule over the beasts of Hell, taming them to their bidding and inflicting torture among Hell's residents." Asterian Beasts serve as mini-bosses of sorts, since you only face off against a handful of them throughout the game. In a later level of Hell (specifically Greed), there will be times where Beast Tamers will appear on the ground while Dante is in control of an Asterian Beast. Make sure to single out and kill the Beast Tamer, because he has the ability to climb up the Asterian Beast and knock Dante off. If this happens, you'll have to attack the Asterian Beast and kill the rider all over again. --- Hell Minion --- Found: Limbo Threat Level: Very Low "Within Hell, these soldiers pursue fight with the relentlessness of a starving hound. They are governed by the Ruling Class of Hell." Hell Minions are just as weak as Undead Minions and roam around the first few Circles of Hell. They attack in groups and don't really have good fighting skills; jumping around and aimlessly slashing at Dante with their daggers. The easiest way to kill them is with a grab attack, since it's a one-hit kill. --- Exploding Minion --- Found: Limbo Threat Level: Low "Their frail bodies are unable to contain the intolerable rage that burns inside them. Their anger burns so hot, it lights to fire, culminating in a sudden burst of fury." Exploding Minions can really kick your butt if you are not careful. Exploding Minions look just like Hell Minions, but are red. Their only attack is a dangerous kamikaze attack, and if they get too close to Dante they'll begin to glow and explode. Use grab attacks to throw them out of the way. You can even use Exploding Minions as makeshift bombs in order to hurt other enemies! --- Guardian Demon --- Found: Limbo Threat Level: Medium "The third choir of fallen angels, these elite soldiers of Hell's army oversee the punishment of the damned." These guys may be elite at the start of the game, but the fact that you fight them in every level of the game reduces them to fodder as the game progresses. Guardian Demons wield daggers and have short, ranged slash attacks. Some of their attacks cannot be blocked, such as when their weapons glow red. Guardian Demons are the first set of higher-level enemies and have increased sword skills. They can also block Dante's attacks unlike weaker minions that you have been dealing with up to this point. They are your first true test to see if you can make it in Hell, because you will have to block and evade their attacks while dishing it out yourself. Focus on one at a time, and follow up with an execution when the button prompt appears. --- Unbaptized Child --- Found: Limbo Threat Level: Very Low "Unbaptized children who were not shown the portal of faith before they died. Without the ability to understand their fate, they lash out violently against anyone they cross." You will often find Unbaptized Children in large groups, as they are very fragile on their own but have the ability to overwhelm you if together. They are the weakest enemies in the game (aside from Pests), so light scythe attacks are the way to go. Take note that they are quick, so they can scuttle behind you and slice your back with their sickle arms. --- Temptress of Lust --- Found: Lust Threat Level: Medium "The feverish winds of the second circle have maddened and disfigured these creatures. Their lasciviousness has become and insatiable desire, one only pacified by feasting on the blood of fornicators." Temptresses of Lust are a bit more deadly that one would think a naked woman with a hole in her chest normally would be. They are insanely quick and can slither on the ground like a snake, often interrupting your combos midway through with their sharp claws. They also have a long-range attack where a large... who knows what that emerges from their... who knows where, that can damage you from a distance. This attack takes some time, so you can easily run to her side or back and counter. Use Holy Cross attacks at a distance and light scythe attacks, and always take the opportunity to deal some damage when the Temptress of Lust stops mid-battle and begins to moan uncontrollably. --- Seductress of Lust --- Found: Lust Threat Level: High "Despite their pale and putrid visage, these wanton wretches are capable of rousing the most carnal of passions in their victims. Only the truly chaste are able to resist their allure." These lovely ladies are even more annoying than the Temptresses of Lust. The Seductress of Lust has the same attacks, but she can seemingly control her desires and doesn't give you an opening to attack by moaning and groaning. In addition, she has a new attack where she will attempt to *surprise* seduce you. Unfortunately, it works! If you are hit by the giant pink lips, Dante will be drawn towards her. Repeatedly tap B before she can attack in your vulnerable state. Seductresses of Lust are first found in Lust, but start to appear frequently in later levels, effectively replacing the temptresses. She avoids your attacks much better than the temptress, so continue to use your Holy Cross at a distance to weaken her. After, use Lust Storm to protect yourself and use short, quick combos to finish the job. --- Gorger Worm --- Found: Gluttony Threat Level: Medium "This horrid creature lies burrowed beneath the surface. Patiently, it waits for unsuspecting souls to wander by before snatching them up in its massive, crushing jaws." Gorger Worms lie underneath the surface; their homes easily distinguishable if you look for the unsettled, cloudy circles on the ground. If you step over their location, they'll rise from the earth and snatch you in their jaws. Rapidly tap B to free yourself, then attack the worm. The Gorger Worm cannot move, so you can avoid its swings or grab attack and attack with projectiles or your Holy Cross for an easy victory. --- Gluttony Minion --- Found: Gluttony Threat Level: Very Low "Full of muck and filth, these bloated miscreants leave a mess of nauseating waste in their wake." Gluttony Minions look and act just like Hell Minions. They attack in groups and have very basic weapon skills. Their most common form of attack is actually after they die. Once a Gluttony Minion perishes, they leave behind a pool of bile that can damage Dante if he steps in it. Like any minion, the most efficient way to eliminate a Gluttony Minion is with a grab attack; doing so prevents them from releasing bile after their death. --- Glutton --- Found: Gluttony Threat Level: Medium "Driven by a voracious and indiscriminate appetite, this lumbering giant wanders the Circles of Hell devouring everything in its path. Nothing satisfies its unyielding hunger." Yes, the Glutton is big. Yes, the Glutton is the most durable of all foes in the game. That doesn't necessarily make the Glutton dangerous. He technically has two attacks, but mainly focuses on using one: his vomit attack that stretches out in front of him in an arc. You are totally safe if you stand behind the Glutton. The Glutton can also use a running hug attack in which he tries to feed you to his arms (yeah, his arms have mouths on them). All you have to do is repeatedly press B to free yourself from his hug of death. Simply standing behind the Glutton and using heavy scythe attacks is the key to success. His vomit attack will not reach you, and he's so slow in moving around that it takes him forever to do something so simple as turn around. --- Greed Minion --- Found: Greed Threat Level: Very Low "Possessed by an insufferable greed, these creatures blindly pursue anything that glitters with a kind of ferocity unmatched by their accursed brethren." Greed Minions sacrifice strength for speed. They are the strongest of the minions and hop around incessantly like evil demon monkeys. This, paired with the fact that you always encounter at least five of them, makes for an annoying battle. You can use grab attacks for an easy kill; scatter them with a wide-range scythe attack, then pick up the nearest one and finish 'em off. --- Hoarder-Waster --- Found: Greed Threat Level: Medium "While one hoarded his wealth, the other squandered it. Both obsessed with the material world, they must now walk eternity together, their bodies fused yet torn asunder." Hoarder-Wasters only have one attack. Unfortunately, that one attack is quite annoying and virtually unblockable. The pair will begin spinning, resulting in a tornado that spins and bounces around the room like a pinball. You cannot stop this attack and you cannot damage the Hoarder-Waster during this, so all you can do is wait and stop. Otherwise, they don't have much going for them. Immediately attack any Hoarder-Waster that you see to prevent them from using their whirlwind attack. This becomes especially important if you are facing off against other enemies, as this attack makes it difficult to target other opponents. Use light scythe combos to keep them off their feet and prevent them from dealing any damage. --- Throne Demon --- Found: Greed Threat Level: High "The second choir of fallen angels, these are the sergeants of Hell's army. Found deeper within Hell, they keep the order." Throne Demons look similar to Guardian Demons, but are much stronger. They cashed in their pathetic daggers for a large axe and fancy gold armor. Aside from a few basic slash attacks, the Throne Demon also has two long-range moves. They include an axe throw and an unblockable ramming attack. The Throne Demons are the first enemy Dante comes across that uses the block ability well. He will frequently block with his shield and even counterattack at times. Light scythe combos don't seem to work so well. Heavy scythe combos are a bit better as they're more impactful. The best way to damage a Throne Demon is to stun him with Holy Cross attacks. Divine Force works especially well. Once the demon is knocked down, continue the assault until the game gives you the option to punish/absolve it. One good piece of information is that you rarely see more than one Throne Demon at a time. --- Fire Guardian --- Found: Anger Threat Level: Medium "Springing suddenly from the darkness, these wily beings lash out with fire and flame before returning to their shadowy forms." Fire Guardians are to be treated just like Fire Minions, but the method of attacking them is a bit more difficult. They are often in their shade form; a wispy black cloud that can float back and forth throughout the arena. You cannot damage them in this form, not even with your Holy Cross. You must wait for them to pause and resume their flame-coated form. When this happens, quickly hit them with a Holy Cross and hack them apart (be quick, because they don't stay extinguished as long as Fire Minions do). Fire Guardians are often found in numbers, but they aren't too threatening because they cannot hurt you while in their shade form. Pay attention when they appear in their glowing red human form, then let the cross fly. --- Heretic --- Found: Heresy Threat Level: High "In life they were the worst of heretics, pagans who sometimes practiced the dark arts. Within Hell they have been utilized by the Ruling Class as guardians and protectors of Hell." Heretics act as support groups. All Heretics, upon their entrance, cast a spell on any surrounding enemy that prevents you from damaging them with Holy attacks. This is symbolized by a purple orb over the enemy's head. The Heretic is also immune to Holy attacks, so the only way to break their spell is to eliminate the Heretic. Heretics are often the first enemy you should focus on when fighting multiple opponents. Avoid their projectile lightning attack and strike up-close. Their pathetic staff attacks should not bother you too much, since they're skinny, wrinkly old men. Have no mercy on the Heretic once it falls and quickly kill it to break its support spell. Heretics become more annoying when facing enemies that can only be destroyed with Holy attacks, such as Fire Minions and Fire Guardians. Just another reason to take them down first. --- Pagan --- Found: Heresy Threat Level: High "These priests once practiced the forbidden dark arts. They have been granted the powers they desperately sought in life and are forced into Hell's service, acting as keepers of the flaming tombs." Pagans have more health than Heretics, but actually pose less of a threat. The only way to tell them apart aside from their appearance (Pagans have dark gray flesh): Pagans do not have the ever-so-annoying shield spell. They are vulnerable to Holy attacks and cannot protect their allies the same way that Heretics do. Other than that, Pagans have the same magic attacks as Heretics. They can shoot either horizontal or vertical lightning bolts at Dante or whack him with their staff if you get too close. Pagans seem to be a bit better at close- range combat as they can block, evade, and counterattack better than Heretics. Despite not being able to shield their allies, you should still take out Pagans before anyone else (unless there's a Heretic present). --- Fiend --- Found: Heresy Threat Level: Very Low "These pests were twisted by Hell's minions into flying instruments of capture. They patrol the rings of the underworld, trapping wayward shades attempting to flee their eternal abode." Fiends are exactly like Pests. They are blue instead of red/black and have a projectile attack. Instead of fireballs, they can shoot ice shards at you. It is unblockable and will seal Dante in a block of ice if hit. Repeatedly tap B to free yourself, then use a single aerial grab to dispatch them. --- Arch Demon --- Found: Violence Threat Level: Very High "The first, and highest ranking, choir of fallen angels. Arch Demons are the lieutenants of Hell's army and are among the original fallen." Arch Demons are the most powerful ranking of demon, above the Throne Demon and Guardian Demon. The Arch Demon wields two swords and wears thick armor, and also has two giant wings used to fly through the air. They are experts at blocking and counterattacking. They can use sword combos and unblockable, glowing sword strikes. Additionally, Arch Demons can also throw their two swords at you like boomerangs. If the Arch Demon begins to float in the air, he can use two more attacks. If he shoots a stream of ice at you, you will be encased in a block of ice. Free yourself by pressing B. He can also use a diving attack. If you dodge this attack, the demon will become stuck in the ground. Run over and attack to keep him grounded. Otherwise, use Holy Cross attacks and other projectile abilities to knock him out of the air. After losing about half health, you can perform a button prompt to rip the Arch Demon's wings off. At this point, the battle is identical to that of a Throne Demon. Use heavy scythe attacks and your Holy Cross to finish it off. --- Damned Crusader --- Found: Violence Threat Level: Medium "Promised salvation for their sacrifice, these warriors followed Dante only to be led astray. They rise again, seeking vengeance against the soul responsible for their damnation." Damned Crusaders look just like medieval knights, carrying traditional swords and shields. They have relatively low health, but spend most of their battles on the defense. They frequently block - almost too much for their own good - and will slash at you periodically. I found that heavy scythe attacks and Divine Force were the best ways to defeat the Damned Crusaders. --- Damned Captain --- Found: Violence Threat Level: Medium "For the boldest and closest of his allies, Dante's betrayal stung the deepest. Forever doomed to walk the Abominable Sands, these warriors are now the most fervent in his pursuit." Initially seen during the fight against Francesco, Damned Captains are also found later on in the game. They actually have less health than the already weak Damned Crusaders, but can become immune to scythe attacks if their shield begins glowing orange. Just like with the crusaders, Divine Force seems to work the best against the Damned Captains. --- Malacoda --- Found: Fraud Threat Level: Very High "The fiery and elusive master of the Malebolge, guardians of the eighth circle. These demonic wardens allow no soul entry or escape lest it be ordained by on high." These freaks are a cross between Throne Demons and Fire Minions. You must extinguish the flames covering their body in order to damage them. Unlike the Fire Minions, it'll take much more than a single swipe to down a Malacoda. Even worse, it will take more than a single Holy Cross attack to put out their flames. Initially, you will be able to attack a Malacoda after using your Holy Cross. As long as you can see some part of their charred body, you can damage them. The Malacoda will retaliate by catching itself on fire again and attacking with their axe (they have the same attacks as Throne Demons). Use more powerful Holy abilities, such as Divine Force and Sacred Judgement will continue to douse the flames. Once you put out a portion of the Malacoda's flames, attack with heavy scythe combos. At some point, you will put out the flames entirely, in which you should attack without hesitation to finish off the monster. =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ BOSSES [1202] =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ .============================================================================. | BOSS: Death | '============================================================================' "All are destined to face the ominous specter of Death. When the time arrives, the harvester of souls severs the tie that binds body and spirit, and ushers the newly departed into the next realm." You will need to know some advanced techniques if you want to survive against Death (that's a weird statement...). A second button icon appears: follow the button prompt to kill Death (heh, another weird statement) and end the fight. .============================================================================. | BOSS: King Minos | '============================================================================' "The tyrannical judge of the underworld sits before the entrance to the second circle, assessing the sins of the damned before sentencing them to their eternal place in Hell." The battle begins with King Minos using his tentacles to attack Dante from below. Continue slashing his face until he falls forward, then follow up with a chain of button commands to end the fight in a gruesome manner. .============================================================================. | BOSS: Cleopatra & Marc Antony | '============================================================================' "The only thing more compelling than her beauty was her lust for power. The Queen of the Nile is granted reign over the second circle, tormenting those who were unable to overcome their lewd desires." "The mighty Roman general who watches over the realm of his final lover. His reputation as a formidable military leader is only overshadowed by the stories of his vile and lecherous conduct." Marc Antony is the foe you should be worried about. All they want you to do is move the Left Analog Stick in an upwards arc: start by pointing to the right, then move up and left. .============================================================================. | BOSS: Cerberus | '============================================================================' "This three-headed monster stands guard before the third circle, rending and flaying the sinners condemned to its post. No soul may pass without confronting the beast." Rule #1: focus on one head at a time. After one of Cerberus's head performes the diving lunge attack, you have about one second to get in a couple hits. Don't mess up! .============================================================================. | BOSS: Alighiero | '============================================================================' "Wholly unconcerned with the suffering of those around him, Dante's father led a life of excess and greed. He spent his life hoarding his wealth, cheating those less fortunate, and abusing his family." Hopefully you have the counter abilities Repayment and Retribution. Annoying as hell, pardon the pun. .============================================================================. | BOSS: Phlegyas | '============================================================================' "In a fit of unholy rage, the mightly Phlegyas set fire to the Temple of Delphi. For his insolence against the divine, the King of the Lapiths is forever condemned to ferry souls across the river Styx." This really isn't a boss battle at all, but I have my own specific reasons to include Phlegyas along with the other bosses (mainly because I have nowhere to put his journal info). Ehhhh... .============================================================================. | BOSS: Francesco | '============================================================================' "The brother of Beatrice left Florence with noble intent, only to be misled by his closest ally. Although Dante promised to protect his friend, he stood silent as Francesco was condemned to death." Brothers-in-laws. Make sure to finish him off with a button sequence once you have depleted his health bar. .============================================================================. | BOSS: Lucifer | '============================================================================' "Cast down for his rebellion against God, the Lord of the Inferno lies imprisoned within a frozen pool of malice and sorrow. It is here he conspires to overthrow Paradise and reclaim his former glory." --- Part 1 --- I should probably mention the recommended Relics used during this boss fight. ______________________________________________________________________________ [13] THANKS/CREDITS [1300] ______________________________________________________________________________ Of course, this guide couldn't have been made without some extra help.
