What do you get when you cross a night of friends having fun, a hot tub in the Kodiak valley, and a Russian energy drink? "It's some kind of hot tub time machine". A very good comedy with ALOT of 80's throw backs and references, I mean it is set there after all. This movie was great for a a lot of laughs but if your looking for a good plot and story this isn't what your looking for. All and all a good movie to see once or twice or whenever you need a laugh. Some knowledge of the 80's will be needed for some of the jokes.
This movie has a pretty solid cast with John Cusak playing the lead with Craig Robinson backing him up. And with a special appearance from Chevy chase. This is not Cusak's usual role if you noticed he's more of a dramatic/action actor but as we saw in war inc., he can be very funny. The always funny Craig Robinson is in his element so if you liked him in Zack and Miri Make a Porno then you will like him in Hot Tub Time Machine.
Story wise Hot tub is lacking, it reminds me a lot of back to the future (it actually references it) with some of the same things from butterfly effect, unlike butterfly effect what happens in the future can not be changed that drastically but it can be changed if you make it do so. The main plot is 3 friends and a nephew go back to where they spent a lot of their glory days, but once they get there, it is not what it used to be, in place of their teenage stomping grounds it is now a touristy place that has been changed completely. Even though this happens they still decide to party in the hot tub which sends them back to 86, where they think they have to make the same decisions they did, as to not change the future. They discover it isn’t as easy as they thought.
I give hot time machine 3 1/2 spinning vortex's to the past out of 5
