Valve and their map editor

Is it just me or has Valve's map creator/editor (Hammer) the most unfriendly map editor ever? I've just recently tried to use it, and have come to find that its going to take months of screwing around with it to do anything halfway decent.

You would think for a company that thrives on mods of their games that they would make a simple, user friendly map editor that doesn't require you to be a gaming programmer to make maps.
