PC broke down...

My PC broke down... . It's over a week since my motherboard collapsed...So, no PC for a while. I am using my ancient laptop and a computer from my job. The technical told my that they will try to find a similar motherboard, otherwise they should add a new one and they will have to format the hard drive...And guess what, i haven't back up my files for over a month... . I asked him if they could back up the disk and then format it. He said it is possible but he didn't tell me how much will it cost (I am afraid to ask...). So, i was wondering if i can take the hard disk, add it to a PC and do the back-up on my own. Any advice?
