|Kingdom Hearts is really an odd concept. Making a solid anime style RPG in a gaming world where RPG's seem to either make a blinding rise to superstardom or a meteoric fall into disregard is a risk in itself. Adding onto that the dangerously childlike Disney characters pushes the concept into the nearly laughable realm. However, whatever mad genius thought this up and decided to run with it deserves a medal.
During the process of developing this game, someone made the now legendary decision to not over complicate Kingdom Hearts and simplify the battle system and controls. This move was a godsend to a game who's concept alone could have doomed it entirely. The controls feel like they are an extension of your will and lack all of the complexity that has ruined so many other could-have-been-amazing RPG titles. The battle system also doesn't rely on warping you into a combat environment and instead allows you to hack and slash to your heart's content. The mechanics alone make this game excellent but let's not forget the brilliant character design. Sora, your character is so well done that he rivals legends like Cloud Strife for memorability in my personal opinion. Not to mention that having Donald Duck and Goofy along for the ride adds a perfect twist of comic relief to an already stellar setup.
The storyline in a game like Kingdom Hearts could have gone so terrible wrong that it's almost scary. Luckily for us, the genius that was used to put the gameplay together had enough left over to carry into the storyline. The plot follows Sora as he sets out from the Destiny Islands to rescue his friends. Meeting some spectacular characters and traversing some of the most memorable Disney worlds of all time. While the tale remains mostly lighthearted, there is just enough seriousness to it to keep you truly compelled. Without a doubt, KH does not fail to deliver the story,
Kingdom Hearts is exactly what the RPG world and the gaming world in general needs. A title that takes itself seriously while not actually taking itself too seriously. Keeping the game lighthearted and simplistic is absolutely the best thing the developers could have done. An absolutely wonderful title that no one should miss.
