||StarCraft. A cult legend in the gaming world. Anyone that is connected at all to the online gaming world has more than likely heard of StarCraft. But what's behind it? What's the reason for the massive fanbase and even professional leagues dedicated solely to this game? Some people have even made a career out of it. Why? What makes it so special? The answer? Everything.
StarCraft is a RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game. Don't know what RTS is? RTS is basically the video game rendition of a military general monitoring the battle unfolding below him. The difference? In an RTS game, you have TOTAL hands-on control of not only the movements of your army, but the creation of the units, their abilities etc. Basically, it offers what most video games do. It takes a real life scenario, and makes it something that the player has near-total control over. In this case, the scenario is a bit more far fetched. Humans (Terran), have advanced their technology and are exploring the galaxies. On one planet, they come under attack by the evil, bloodthirsty aliens known as the Zerg. But they aren't the only aliens out here. The ancient race known as the Protoss are the most technologically advanced species ever. They wield psionic powers and are no pushovers. And so the battle for the galaxies ensues.
The gameplay is unlike anything you will ever pick up. Commanding your units, bases, and powers from the ground up, you will be immediately confronted by what is arguably the best strategy based gameplay ever developed. Harvest minerals and gas to build up your units, scout out enemy bases, defend against attacks, and carefully prepare your armies for an all-out assault on your opponent (either AI opponents or another human opponent). The graphics are stellar. They aren't hyper realistic, but they have a feel that is reminiscent of classic Star Trek. As if I needed to say it, that just makes it perfect. The soundtrack is great. The game has minimal BGM which gives the game a much more intense feel as this makes the sound effects much more realistic. The controls are superbly designed. Using a mouse/hotkey combination to it's full potential, the setup is impeccable and makes the controls easy to use so you can focus on playing the game. The difficulty is on a perfect, yet endless curve. The single player campaign goes from easy to difficult seamlessly, but once you step into the world of online play, the difficulty becomes an endless mountain to be climbed. This leaves you with endless replay value. Something very very few games have.
Overall, StarCraft will go down in history as not only one of the best RTS games ever made, but as one of the best games ever made period. It takes minutes to learn, and a lifetime to master. A truly legendary game.
