Alice: Madness Return is a pleasant game in its genre, like American McGee's Alice was. Something, playing as a gothic young lady with a 12 inch long vorpal knife, make me oddly happy. However, Alice is a very good game, with not-so-much flaws, wonderful setting and full of madness like an Hatter...Graphics: 9 Wonderland is amazing. Maybe some textures are not truly HD, but I didn't really notice that. Most of the time it's just right. We don't have the extreme quality of other titles using Unreal Engine like Bioshock (but Irrational made many changes to the engine to make it amazing), however especially in dramatically staged light situation textures and normal maps are very good. I loved the change of settings of the levels AND Alice (if we are underwater, Alice has clothes like an anglerfish, if we are taking a tea with the Mad Hatter, Alice has a wonderful steampunk dress, and so on), but some are brilliant: in the oriental setting, for example, there are origami ants and the landscape is like a piece of china, or a sculpture of jade, with trees carved or painted... Gameplay: 7 Good the combat, good also the platform part and the minigames (some very funny), but there are some little bugs that can ruin the game... I found, for example, a violet flower that didn't let me return big, so I had to reload... I didn't like the save system either. You can redo the chapter, but in a game I want the possibility of save and reload anywhere (if the developers don't want me to save in a specific part they can simply disable the savegame for that part). Story: 8 There are some weird dialogues in the game (not weird by the game... weird because they are somewhat stupid or useless for the story...), but the rest is crazy enough for the real Alice in Wonderland book and enthralling enough for this genre of game. Good characters, good script, definitely a good job. |
