Joker doesn't have a concrete back story and no one knows his real name for certain. Joker himself said "Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another... if I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice! Ha ha ha!"
The most popular story has him working as an engineer named Jack at a chemical plant before he quits to become a stand up comedian, he fails miserably. With his wife Jeannie pregnant, he gets desperate and agrees to help two criminals break into the chemical plant so they can get into the car company next door. While planning the job the police call him to tell him his wife and unborn child died in a household accident.
His wife was allegedly killed by a corrupt cop on the payroll of the criminals to force him into doing what they want. Joker tries to find this cop later on but is badly beat by Hush and thrown out of Gotham before he can manage.
He tries to back out of the break-in but the criminals force him to go through with it. But as soon as they get in security manages to kill the two criminals; the engineer tries to escape but runs into Batman. Scared out of his mind he jumps a railing and lands in a tank of chemical waste. When he gets out he sees his reflection with bleached white skin, red lips, green hair, and a permanent grin. This along with the death of his wife and child drive him completely insane.

Joker had so many supporters. Probably because of latest batman game. Also if u guys want to vote more on the Best Villain of all time. In august-september to come, on the gamespot they gonna make a poll about best villain name. Last year there was Best Hero, now its villain.
An excellent villain, no doubts there I think Darth Vader has a little more evil-doing under his belt (or helmet) though, so rightly comes out on top this time
