I'm on Obama's side on this one.

You cannot allow your subordinates to publicly criticize you.

Soldiers, especially one who is a General and who commands a theatre of war, have no rights to free speech. Quite the opposite.

They are obliged to follow legal orders to the best of their abilities. They are obliged to keep their opinion of them to themselves.

You can criticize a commander in private--because he won't find out. Criticize him to your peers in private, to your family in private, and criticize face-to-face in a respectful manner. But in public, you support your commander 100%.

McCrystal is lucky he was allowed to resign and keep his pension. If I were Obama, I'd have had him cashiered.

as a serving high-ranking military officer he's not supposed to question his commander-in-chief's decisions. period.

I'm sure glad I'll never be in McChrystal's position then, they'd have me discreetly disposed of for my opinion of the government and my loved ones paid off or disposed of similarly.

In that case you wouldn't even have made it into a General.
