Ok I've seen this term thing like a hundred times in games and movies. Can someone please explain what a rail gun actually is? In layman's terms if possible. Is it some sort of a magnetic gun or something?

Yes. Electromagnets accelerate a piece of metal to stupendous speeds. When the piece of metal hits its target, the energy transfer instantly melts the projectile, making it a spear of molten metal--very much the same idea as the sabot round which modern tanks fire.

Wikipedia : A railgun is an entirely electrical gun that accelerates a conductive projectile along a pair of metal rails using the same principles as the homopolar motor. Railguns use two sliding or rolling contacts[1] that permit a large electric current to pass through the projectile. This current interacts with the strong magnetic fields generated by the rails and this accelerates the projectile.

The U.S. Navy has tested a railgun that accelerates a 3.2 kg projectile to 2.4 kilometers per second (seven times the speed of sound).

Ah thanks. That's all I needed to know. I read on Wikipedia about it, but it was too much mumbo jumbo technical nonsense with a pinch of gibberish. Much appreciated

a railgun is an entirely electrical gun that accelerates a conductive projectile along a pair of metal rails. it uses two sliding or rolling contacts that permits a large electric current to pass through the projectile and when this current interacts with the strong magnetic fields generated by the rails it accelerates the projectile to achieve incredible speeds imparting a huge amount of kinetic energy to the projectile.

You guys every heard of that gun made by an Australian company called Metal Storm? I saw it on that Future Weapons show on Discovery.

It's totally electronic and has 36 barrels with the fastest firing rate of any gun every made.

And they also have a 3 barreled handgun that's completely electronic.
I don't want a big car, particularly. I have no need for acreage, and I don't like the fuel bills. But I don't want a small one because they're all like supermarket own-brand cola: weedy imitations of the real thing - Jeremy Clarkson

ohhh yea...Metal Storm..i saw it too on Future Weapons...wow..awesome. no way anyone or anything can escape that. its pure genius..and its pure evil. it can blanket an entire area with metal slugs coming down at incredible speeds..also based electrical firing tech.
