But I'm sure banks and stuff would wipe those hard drives before getting rid of the machines. I couldn't imagine a bank simply giving that hard drive to some random recycling company.

I never knew that, but I'm not one bit surprised and kind of suspected it. What is the point of copiers even saving their documents for long periods of time, anyway? If I ever need to make more copies of something I copied six months ago, a copier would be the last place I look. Considering that most people don’t even know that copiers have a hard drive, they would more then likely do the same. It should be an add on, not something that is already built in.
