Considering how frequently I do it, kicking the stairs would be pointless.

Perhaps the stairs merely symbolise yourself as you constantly try and hold yourself back from reaching your goals. It's possible that you feel like you don't deserve happiness and your mind has created a barrier which displays itself in environmental metaphors.
You have wings but consider yourself to be a penguin, rather than an eagle.
