Ryuk Killed light because he failed in the end and actually Ryuk would get bored if they arrested light cause he couldn't use the death note anymore. And who burned the Death notes?!
Also Ryuk killed him because the first few episodes he says to Light that he will write down his name in his notebook at one point.
I actually don't know which one I like more. They were both extremely clever. Although I do think that the anime took a turn for the worse when L died, it just lost something which Near nor Mello could achieve.
