And it's not the trainer!
I've had similar situations happen with other recent 2K games (Borderlands, to be exact). A large explosion or flash happens in the game, and my screen goes all-grey, or all-tan, and the PC locks up completely (causing me to force a hard-reboot).
My system was built in late 2008 around a GA-P35-DS3R & a C2D E6850. The original 8800GTX I had died, and I upgraded it to a XFX GTX260 Black Edition. Can any of you guys speculate weather that card is 'too much' for this older non-PCIe 2.0 motherboard & might be causing these crashes?
I'm planning a i7-870 build very soon, but I'm stuck waiting for Giga to release the GA-P55A-UD7 & nVidia to put the GTX480 to market. I would hate to have to wait until March (or later) to play this game...

You know what, I think I figured out what the problem might be - my damn Creative X-Fi card! I was getting crashes on SP mode in Modern Warfare 2 as well - I just finished the second-half of SP on my USB headset (so as not to disturb my wife), and not a SINGLE glitch or crash.
I'm going to check for any latest drivers, but I've had what could only be described as IRQ conflicts in years past on a previous machine I built with an Audigy 4 card as well. I pulled the card & used the nForce2 digital audio on the motherboard with '0' issues... 🤔

Creative hasn't posted an updated driver for the X-Fi family since the summer of last year - and my machine is a C2D E6850 + 4GB RAM + GTX260 Black Edition - plenty powerful enough to run the game...
Update - I just about damn near confirmed it now - I played 4 chapters/areas in on Bioshock 2 & a few SpecOps levels on MW2 without any lock-ups or crashes! I guess I'll put the X-Fi back in it's box until I can sell it (there's nothing wrong with the AC889 codec on this motherboard anyway - it's Realtek's most advanced & sounds just fine on my 5.1 set).
This might make me want to go back & try Borderlands again...
