I've just beaten the game again i think its the 6th time across PC and xbox. Anyway I've finished but i want to use my save for ME2 but the only saves i have are at the conduit and before i kill Saren(soverign form) i cant save after I've waited through the credits but it takes me to the main menu. I was wondering does ME2 detect autosaves or do i just start a new game with my character that i used to finish the game and save when i can so that i can use it with ME2 or would that show up as i haven't finished ME1.

the way it works for ME 2 is after the credits you have the option to continue your game, or start a new game, using your character that you beat the game with. im assuming that you would have that option on ME1 also, but i dont know, you could try it and see, anyways if you continue your game you can then save it after you defeated sovereign on citadel, theoretically.

After you've finished the game, it automatically makes a special save that holds your character's information and other details that you'll use to either play through ME again or use in ME2. If you check your Documents/Bioware/Mass Effect/Save you should see a bunch of saves with your character name and a special save with a name like "Char_..." and a bunch of numbers where the dots are separated with the "_" sign.

Actually there is a little bit more to it than just that. On the launcher is an option to import saves to ME2. Everytime you finish up a game in ME1 you need to re-import all the saves over again. Not really sure why you just can't copy the new save over but... Anyway... ME2 won't see the newest save unless you import via the ME2 launcher.
