Back onto the subject of the play...

Our American Cousin is the origin of the mixed up aphorism.

Like "A rolling stone is worth two in the bush". Or something of that nature.

There is a character in the plan, Lord...something or other...who constantly mixes up aphorisms.

It's directly after a particularly elaborate, and therefore funny, mixed up aphorism that the President was supposedly shot.

Not that the President was supposedly shot, but that it was supposedly during one of these parts that the...GAAAA! Nevermind.

In the end they will lay their freedom at our feet and say to us, 'Make us your slaves, but feed us.'
