In my opinion, definitively. I think that to guys it's a something like a rite of passage into manhood, to girls it's like an act(don't know if it's the exact word for it) of affection and great love towards the one they're "giving" their virginity. Their virginity can be biologically checked, ours can't.
Although this may vary at times after all the world changes constantly.
