An escalator can never break: it can only become stairs. You would never see an "Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order" sign, just "Escalator Temporarily Stairs". Sorry for the convenience.

The AMC 16 theaters here in Burbank have stairs that are something like 40 feet wide, from the ground up to the front door. The escalator is 3 feet wide and cannot take more than two skinny people abreast. Yet 99% of movie-goers use the escalator.
