Marshal is only one Knight, who gains experience by battle. You can make him learn skills, which can be improved 3 times, each of them. He can learn up to 6 different skills. Other knights are learning by reading books or for example cleric, converting a province.

No. He must lead your forces to battle to gain experience. There is no way exept fighting, how can marshal get experience. I sometimes wish he could learn from the books too.
