I find this happens to the newer Bethesda games, Fallout 3 and Oblivion. They don't like to go to desktop . I also find that they both also seem to crash when you try to exit them.
If anyone knows specifically why this is the case, I'd like to know as well.

Am not an expert here on this. But its happend to me alot and I started shutting things off that might bug the game then. Like sidebar any IM software and made the hell sure any pop up stuff is disabled to and seems to do the trick. But crashing when you exit the game I have no cool.

I Run my game in window mode with the resolution one down so if im entering a cheat i can read it as i type, you can alt-tab out of this, then go to your taskbar to activate the window again.

Write it down If you can't remember, other wise use alt-tab. Always works for me. Even when I'm not in windowed mode.

Yeah, Fallout 3 seems to hate you and crash if you go to the desktop, via alt+tab or otherwise. I remember the Pirates of the Caribbean game by Bethesda did the same thing...
