I helped work on a commercial for the school district once and it cost something like $300 to use a U2 song in the commercial. It wasn't my choice, I was just there to fill a seat on the committee.
U2 is probably the most expensive music, since they have the fringe IRA factions behind them.
Extrapolate for number of songs and projected audience from there and they don't really need to make a whole lot to cover it.
Just when I'm beginning to enjoy it, the most annoying issue struck me. My account is currently being unavailable due to some glitches with Facebook servers. God damn it!!
