Multiplayer woes on Vista

As simple as it sounds, I recently bought the game from Amazon for a bit of nostalgia. Fancied a lan game with my sibling. Installed it on his PC too, every time one of us tries to host a Lan game, the thing CTD's.

Is this a common problem, if so has anyone found a solution. Thanks in advance.
