Hi,
Does not matter what Sims you play they are basically the same game. The Sims 2 just has more features at the moment then The Sims 3 (Expansion Packs) but in my honest opinion i would just go direct to Sims 3, its great and really fun also the new trainer is great to have .

Well, I don't think the trainer is very helpful as all those cheats are already part of the game but none the less...
I'm not sure if I really should recommend Sims 3, since there are still a lot of bugs in it. Sims 2 is very nice, but since it isn't the current version it's out of date. You won't probably see anything new anymore. There are definitely no more extensions comming from EA and I suppose there won't be any more great mods either. All the modders will now start to work on TS3 and not TS2 anymore.
I'd recommend buying Sims 3 but not the Collectors Edition. You get a sim-car and a plumbbob(diamond)-shaped USB-Stick. THAT'S ALL.
The Box states you get a hint guide for the game... Well... That crappy **** is 6 pages long and doesn't say anything the tutorial doesn't tell you, too.
The Box states you get 1.000 SimPoints to spend on the EA-SimShop, but you get these for registering your game, not for having a CE, so everyone gets them.
