I wrote out a huge rant about how without oil the UAE wouldn't have F1 programs and your school would be a tent and you wouldn't even be in the UAE in the first place, but at the end I started repeating myself and it lost focus and I deleted it.
I compared the UAE to Pennsylvania--because after Pennsylvania ran out of oil early in the last century, it became nothing where as before it was the center of America and the largest oil producer in the world.

It does help that the ruler of the UAE is quite the visionary. Turning oil profits into tourism-attracting real estate isn't exactly a walk in the park.
Granted, if UAE stopped exporting oil i'm sure our GDP would significantly decrease, but thanks to the oil a very solid tourism industry has emerged and is fairly independent of the oil profits, as is the real estate business going on here, but that's totally dependent on the tourism industry.
