I just reached to that point now, and also getting the black screen, hopefully it's "fixable"

*EDIT* I managed to get pass it without using the trainer.

Temporary fix:

When you get to the fight with the Jackal where there's the little fenced area covered in that black gunk... once you've figured out how to defeat it,

1) turn off unlimited health

2) enter the jackal

3) blow open wall on right-hand side of arena (from where you enter) with cannon [m]

4) exit jackal

5) turn on unlimited health

6) resume fun and stay out of jackals...

AFAIK there's no other part of the game that requires you to use a jackal
